I said, No, why should I be? can learn their culture and they can learn mine. Magna Community Council President Laura Jo McDermaid was also interviewed, but in a field near Hercules. The difference in location was apparently because of the speculation of where the Soviets would live. The interviewer asked McDermaid if the community council had any input in the matter. We have nothing to do with it, because the federal government will decide that. The council president also stated she had heard the number of Russians at Hercules might in0 range anywhere from dividuals. It would be nice if they could bring their families with them, I J. Neilson There they are on television in living color. They come from all walks of life and most of them are residents of Magna. Because they were in the right place at the right time, they can lay claim to something not many people will ever be able to do. They is those patrons of Dyches Pharmacy in Magna, who were recently interviewed on camera by ZDF-Tof West Germany, The television interviews are part of the media attention ongoing world-wid- e focuses on Magna, because of Hercules participation in the International Nuclear Forces Treaty. The film begins with an aerial view of Magna; it then takes in a view of Main Street. ground-leve- l The narrator notes that the community is unlike most European cities, for it has no central meeting place. That is why the interviewer chose Dyches Pharmacy. Lee Workman observed such publicity is good for Magna, because it helps people to understand there are other communities in Salt Lake County. Pharmacy owner Tom will get Dyches said the Russianss a good sample of what rural while UTA bus America is like, driver Jim Allen noted a cultural exchange would be a good possibility. The interviewer asked me if I was afraid of the Russians, said V t 20-6- too. The film also featured a short tour of Hercules and showed the spot where the Pershing missiles were formerly constructed. Dyches noted an aspect of the video some do not appreciate is the filming of the redevelopment area on Main Street. People dont like to see it, because it shows where the decay has occured. Some of the property owners who dont live here have let those buildings decay. If those owners had to live here and look at it every day, theyd dc something about it! the pharmacist claimed. A member of the Mer chants Redevelopment Associatior of Historic Magna, Dyches firml believes renovation is an op portunity that should not be missed. If owners cant make their he property presentable, suggested, well ask them if we can do it and bill them for it. They can pay the association. One way or another, the community will apparently get a facelift. Magna residents Lew and Betty Panopulos will head the historical committee, while LaVelle Prince is in charge of finances. The architecture committee is chaired by Mike Retford and Leo Ware. The April beautification effort will kick-of- f with a variety show at Cyprus High School on the evening of Friday, April 8. A parade on Main Street will follow on Saturday morning April 9, with the parade being composed of anyone who is dressed for cleanup work. The parade title will be Overalls. Plans indicate prizes for the best dressed workers and some of the funniest clean-u- p entries. The actual clean-u- p campaign will follow the parade and continue till the end of April. Further details will be made public when they become available. Other items of business include Salt lake Countys agreement to set up a matching grant fund, which means the county will match each property owners investment in the renovation area, up to $10,000. The county is considering the details and a resolution should be available within two months, said Prince. ZDF-Tspent two hours alone at the Magna Times asking questions about the apparent visit of Russians to Hercules, besides filming interviews of Dyches Pharmacy patrons and community council president Laura Jo McDermaid. The short feature on Magna was shown throughout German in January. Copies of the broadcast have been received here with the English translation intact. It was good public relations for Magna, Prince noted. It was very, very objective and good for outsiders coming into the community. It was put together well. Signs, placards, banners and stories from the media will all be a part of announcing Magnas cleanup month. The variety show places emphasis on local talent first, as well as others in the area. The kickoff parade plans to have marching bands, drill team, floats, scout troops, dignataries, and everyone else who will band together to beautify and clean up. Each of the board of trustees are 'members of the beautification committee, Which will help to emphasize the importance of the initial clean up, Prince said. Dyches observed that April means those using the county landfill may do so throughout the month for free. He chuckled at the thought of what incentive would be provided in this way to encourage home and property owners to clean up. Quarterly membership meetings and affiliate members. Even though they will include all members month cant vote, Prince encouraged, the members should attend for their own information V Two people from Magna have been recommended to the countys Community and Economic Development Review committee (CEDRC). Magna Times owner J. The Villa offers a home atmosphere with an emphasis on reintegration into everyday community and social activities. It provides a therapeutic link between a hospital setting and productive, independent living. Weisman observed the average stay for a client is six to eight months. The transitional living programs goal is to help each client attain a maximum level of independence. Because each individuals needs are different, the staff strives to maintain flexibility to meet those needs, while at the same time provide the necessary structure for cognitive reorganization.
