The flag has been designed to symbolize the link between learning and liberty and to serve as a reminder of the importance of education to a democratic way of life. Promoted by the National School Public Relations Association, the flag has been designed and produced with funds provided by the Southland Corporation, owner of the 711 chain stores. The firm has donated one flag to each of the 50 states. In Utah, the flag will debut at the Liberty Parade in Provo City. A delegation of students will also carry a banner briefly explaining the flags purpose. Following this intitial introduction, members of the Utah School Public Relations Association will make the flag available to school districts and civic organizations throughout the state. Activities are planned to emphasize the importance of the public school system to all Utah citizens. On July 4, 1985, the first flags commemorative flag depicting learning and liberty is appropriate during this time of educational renaissance. Flags are as old as civilization. Throughout history, people have realized that they could express strong feelings for their country and other significant institutions by showing respect for a unifying emblem a flag. This helped them to of a community be fellow-citizeor a movement instead of merely being people who happened to live together in one part of the world. Americans, more than most, have always been a flag conscious people. They have turned their Old Glory into the highest symbol of their nation and have willingly .sacrificed their ; fortunes and., lives to protect and preserve it. As proof of their very real loyalty to the United States flag, Americans' were the first to have a Flag Day, a Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, and a flag etiquette code. The Flag of learning and Liberty incorporates the red, white, and blue of the Stars and Stripes, and symbolizing the link between education and a strong, free nation will be raised over the capitals of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Dubbed the Flag of learning and Liberty, the new banner was inspired by recent national attention on the importance of education a symblizes Americas historical belief in and reliance upon reform movements undertaken by many states. The flag design and July 4th ceremonies are significant education. The new flag features a horizontal red stripe across its top which depicts the strength and vitality 4 a democratic way of life. A blue stripe running horizontally along the bottom represents the stability and opportunity made possible by a strong system of education. The center field of white conveys the virtue and aspirations of a nation Of free people. The central focus of the flag is an emblem in the middle of the field. The design features two gold flames at the top, one for learning and another for liberty. They are supported by a base of four elements, arranged in alternating blue and red pairs. The blue elements represt two of foundations strong key education high expectations and effective teaching. The two red being coordinated by the National School Public Relations association (NSPRA) on the anniversary of its 50th birthday. The concept of linking learning and liberty has its roots in the founding of America. The leaders of the Revolution and the following years saw education as a means of preserving liberty, securing unity, promoting good citizenship, and developing resources of the land and people. They believed education would help maintain the union of states, a united people, and a republican form of government. Thoman Jefferson held that was essential! education necessary in a republic. Education was a must, he saw, for increasing production, saving labor, preserving health, and improving agriculture. John Adams believed that knowledge alone could preserve people from tyranny. John Jay considered knowledge to be the soul a republic. Utahs old Granola can be a tasty and colorful way to start your day when its made with Fruit Bits. The mile long camp, adjacent to the community of Fairfield in Cedar Valley, was established in .1858 by Col. Albert Sydney Johnstons 3,500 man army, which was sent to Utah to bring Mormon settlers under government control. Federal officials changed their minds and cancelled the armys mission shortly before the soldiers arrived in the territory, but they did not instruct the men to return, the army settled in at the site now being excavated, becoming a benefit to the pioneers instead of a threat. Berge said the army employed local settlers for constuction work, contracted with them to make adobe bricks at a penny apiece, and traded for vegetables. When the army was ordered back to Fort Leavenworth, Kan. in 1861 to prepare for the Civil War, it left $4 million in military surplus that was auctioned off for $100,000, according to Berge. The dig so far has uncovered only a tiny fraction of what remains of the camp, Berge said. Historians know the camp was here but they dont know much about its configuration, he said. Our dig, which we hope to be able to continue for at least five more years, is adding significant details to the store of Sun-Mai- d rice mixtures.
