The answer, according to Agriculture Commissioner Miles Cap Ferry is Yes there are. For most people agriculture seems to represent a declining industry. Relative to total income in Utah, agriculture income seems to have fallen off the charts. Employment is wav down. Its hard to think of agriculture as a growth industry. Yet, says Ferry, we hear from people who are innovators, people who have ideas and the gumption to pursue them. These arent people chasing public funds. They are looking for technical information and assistance. They know how to farm, but they dont always know how to package and market their products. They ask for help in dealing with such things a middlemen, direct sales, and transportation, as well as regulations and other governmental necessities. Agriculture entrepreneurs know there is little future in expanding production of commodities now in' surplus. Such as wheat and feed high-quali- ty offer our full support to the President, the congress, and the secretary of agriculture, and we' make sure they know the effects here in Utah, of these problems. With few exceptions, it is not likely that a farmer can move into y high-valproduction of crops and hope to immediately make a good living. It will take time to develop the markets, to learn the specialty apple grower, and a greenhouse tomato producer. A characteristic of the entrepreneurs is common responsible outstanding management capability. Another is their ability to understand trends in consumer preferences. They know that consumer tastes for freshness and for superior quality are rising. And we see growing appetites for a wider variety of produce. The mood in the Utah Department Agriculture is one of cautious optimism. We have not found the answer to the Nations overriding agriculture problems. But, we have found some first steps to take toward development with increased production of high-valu- e crops that are not in surplus and that are not controlled by the federal government. Cellular mobile began phone service1 commercial operation today in the Salt Lake area. NewVector Communications, Inc., formally inaugurated 4 its VectorOne service at a ceremony this morning that featured the first official cellular phone call in the State of Utah, by Governor Norman Bangerter. Governor Bangerter made that historic first call from the site of the cellular systems nerve center or mobile telephone switching office ( MTSO. ) The MTSO is located at 4745 Wiley Post Way, Salt Lake City. With that phone call, City officially became Salt Lake the first system in Utah, and one of the first to begin service among the nations 31st commercially-operate- d 60th through largest cellular markets. Salt Lake City also is the fifth city in the New Vector territory to offer service; NewVector, which' currently has the most cellular systems in operation in the U.S., commenced service in 1984 in Minneapolis St. Paul, Denber, Seattle and Phoenix. Coverage area of the Salt Lake . system currently totals 1,312 square miles, extending from Ogden on the north to Point of the Mountain on the south, and from the Wasatch Range (east) to the Great Salt Lake and Oquirrh Mountains (west.) Built at a ' cost exceeding $4.5 million, the system has six cell sites. It is one of the first applications of the Western Electric Autoplex-1- 0 digital switching system, under which a digital switch relays mobile phone calls from one transmitting and receiving cell to another and also -- d to the telephone system. With the new switching equipment, land-base- NewVector will be able to offer Salt Lake City customers important such conveniences call as forwarding, call wating, three-wa- y conferencing and speed calling. NewVector Communications, Inc., headquartered in Bellevue, Wahington is a subsidiary of Denver-bas- e U.S. West. NewVectors territory extends from Minnesota and Iowa to Washington and Oregon, and from the Canadian border to te Mexico. Cellular mobile communications is a tremendous improvement over conventional mobile phone service in both voice quality and capacity. Unlike conventional car phone that use a single antenna to blanket a city, cellular uses a larger network of antennas that allow radio frequencies to be reused. systems growing Taxpayers can visit their local IRS office for group tax assistance, according to Bill Craig, Public Affairs Officer for the Salt lake City District of the Internal Revenue Service. Now the 1984 Tax Reform Act has made it possible for a majority of the employees, as well as the owner, to petition for a reduction of the percentage.
