Show Magna Times, July flown tiers 17, 1980, Page 5 The C Cupboard by Janice Hubbard By Shirley A. Christensen Sometimes I think the best way to weed out problems be to weed out problem parents. Think of all the silly, senseless things we teach our children. One of my favorite tricks was to insist the child apologize. What a naughty boy! You go tell Sally that youre sorry, I would sternly demand. But Im not sorry, Raymond would reply. Yes, you are, I would say. No apology sang in my ears. If you know whats good for you, youll say youre sorry, I would threaten. Eventually, he apologized. Time passed with us playing this same scene many times. Then when he was 18, amazement struck. He managed to gracefully apologize, without prompting. "1 am sorry that I was out so late, he would sincerely ( ? ) say while he looked me straight in the eye. The very next night, do you think he was on time? You know he wasnt. But again, he would gracefully apologize. Youre the most insincere person it has ever been my misfortune to know, I would quietly screech. When someone says theyre sorry, they should make some effort to ACT as if they really meant it, I would conwith kids would Eric four, who is just a little spoiled became a big brother and now shares the spotlight with wee sister Bree Kirk Anderson. Another little touch of hypocrisy I learned at my own sweet mothers knee was that my mother could tell when I was not telling the truth by looking deep into my eyes. Janice, look in my eyes, she would say. I would look, feeling like I was facing the entire Spanish Inquistion out in full force. It was no wonder that often I tried to beat the system by confessing to some small infraction, hoping to avoid the larger betrayal. Think of the many myths, all untrue, that we foist on our children.
