Show Iagr APRIL TIMES, THURSDAY, M Vti.N 2 10. 1975 Guest Editorial Timon 3 -th9r.1nnna r j'i'jj'ii'H! i"i'.irn By Jennie L. Hansen Through a series of court battles it is now permissable for a girl to play Little League ball. WBBA saved themselves a battle and simply said okay, any little girl who can prove she can really play ball can join the boys game. Many laud this as a victory for the feminist movement, others call it something else entirely, but we call it sad. Perhaps joining a boys team is the only way a girl can play ball in some areas, but that isn't the case here. Throughout the Kearns, Taylorsville, Granger area is a very thriving ball league for girls. Bobby Sox ball takes a backseat to none. Near us in the Hunter area girls can join the Bonnet Ball League, another great organization. These leagues, like their male counterparts, provide girls with an opportunity to learn athletic skills, excell, and to compete locally, statewide and nationally. But why shouldnt a girl play on a boys team if shes good enough? Theres the rub right there! Why should she play on a team where she constantly has to prove shes good enough. Boys get on the team by just showing up with a parent, a birth certificate and the appropriate fee. If she joins a girls team thats all she has to prove too. When a girl joins a boys team she is promoting the old assumption that there is something superior about a boys sport over a girls. She may also encourage that very thing to happen if the best girl players are all playing on boys teams, leaving only the less athletic girls to compose the girls league. Perhaps the less athletic boys will join them and well have the two co-eteams ; but w ell call the best team boys and the poor team girls. What is the purpose of youth baseball leagues anyway? Is it recreation, gaining physical skills, friendship, and the thrill of competition? Boys leagues are often accused of serving one purpose only; winning, and that for the parents benefit. That surely isnt always the case, especially in our community, but it is a charge which has never been leveled against Bobby Sox ball where every girl gets a chance to play. These organized sports come along in a young persons life at a stage of development where the young people naturally segregate the boys from the girls in their play anyway. Its a time when strong friendships of the same sex are formed. For a long time it has been considered important to the growth, and maturation process to go through this Boys only Girls only stage. It makes one suspicious that when a girl fights to be the only girl on a boys team she does it because daddy wishes she were a boy. Of course theres nothing wrong with boys and girls playing baseball together, even being on the same team or forming a co-eleague, if thats what the kids, the parents and the sponsors want. If a co-e- d game is desired, fine; make it that, but recruit the girls the same as the boys, make the requirements the same, pick a uniform suitable to both sexes and select coaches, managers and referees from both sexes. We only object to the inherent sexism in letting a girl play on a "boys team. Since 1973, a number of discussions have taken place between Kennecott and the County regarding the unzoned areas in western Salt Lake County and the impact the proposed zoning would have upon the operations of Kennecott. Because of the many millions of dollars invested in Kennecott s integrated ore processing operations, it was, and still is, of particular concern when recommendations are made that could restrict future utilization of Kenne-cott- s land in its operations. was also suggested that certain areas are more suitable for light industrial utilization and should be so designated. Upon reviewing the final plan, it appears that Kennecotts suggestions and request received only minimal consideration. Kennecott recognizes the wisdom of planning as a sound management principal and the need to have guides for proper development of resources. It should be pointed out that Kennecott has been, and will continue to be, a good neighbor and a concerned citizen of this county. A quick review of the records, together with the Magna Development Plan, will show that most of the park and recreational facilities in the Magna area are on land that has been made available by planning staff, representatives of Kennecott met with the county planners to review the preliminary master plan in the Magna area. Upon reviewing the visual aids prepared bv the land-ua- e planners, it was the position of Kennecott that too much iipd surround;-'- " Inter-Librar- CONTINUED Magna has been designated as a greenbelt. Since a large extent of Kennecotts land will be affected, it was our recommendation that consideration be given to a reduction in total area so that potential best use of the property would not be indiscriminately restricted. It In early 1974, upon request by members of the county reserved especially for the children. It is not the intent of this letter to reject the efforts of the county in its endeavor to discharge its responsibilities or to set forth guidelines for future development. It is, however, a request for reconsideration and also to make an observation that all too often guidelines and plans when adopted have a way of becoming rigid and unflexible rules. (Signed! B B. In our opinion, potential benefit for the industrial development of this area far exceeds use for agricultural or greenbelt. Also, consideration should be given to the area immediately west of 0 West Street and the area southwest of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.
