A man accused of threatening a police officer with a knife after breaking into a building pleaded guilty to two felony counts in 2nd District Court T uesday Joseph Madsen 2G pleaded guilty to aggravated assault after he drew a knife on an arresting officer on April 26 999 The officer stopped Madsen after he matched the description of an individual who had burglarized a home stealing a gold ring and some clothing In exchange for his guilty pica the Davis County Attorney reduced one of the charges to a lesser felony charge Madsen is currently being held in the Davts County jail with a 520000 bail He is scheduled to be sentenced J uly 6 1 1 RICH COUNTY: Property taxes to Increase around Bear Lake Rich County plans to increase property taxes on homes surrounding Bear Lake More people are building homes in the area making the property more valuable And because of a discrepancy between the county’s assessment and sales prices the Utah State Tax Commission has ordered Rich County to increase property values used in calculating taxes Property values will increase 36 percent said county Assessor Kim Wilson However the tax rate increase which has not yet been determined will be less Wilson has already sent letters to about 500 homeowners in Garden City and Laketown informing them that the property values the county has recorded are below fair market value Notices of individual valuation and tax change will be sent to homeowners in August “It is a desirable area” Wilson said “It’s one of the few places in Utah where people can privately own lakefront property People want that” The number of building permits issued in Garden City went from two in 1 990 to 25 in 1 996 according to statistics from the Bear River Association of Governments WEBER COUNTY: Police make arrests in some car burglaries OGDEN - In the continuing battle against vehicle burglaries police arrested five adults and one juvenile Saturday in connection with a string of burglaries that occurred early that morning Sgt Rocky Gallegos said police recovered approximately $3000 worth of property from the suspects during a traffic stop around 5 am Saturday morning Gallegos said one of the victims caught the suspects in his car and confronted them “When they were interrupted by the victim one of the suspects pulled a knife” he said The victim called police at 4:29 am Later when the suspects were pulled over in the 2 00 block of Liberty Ave the victim identified them as the men he had confronted in his car earlier Gallegos said 0 victims have identified stolen property but he believes there are more because some property remains 1 1 unclaimed Most of the vehicle burglaries occurred at apartment buildings near the 500 block of Park Boulevard Anyone who would like to identify stolen property can call Det Todd Watanabe at One of the adult suspects was booked into Weber County Jail on charges of vehicle burglary and aggravated assault The other four adults were booked for vehicle burglary all felonies The juvenile was taken to Weber Valley Detention Center for vehicle burglary Gallegos said he could not release the names of the suspects because they have been uncooperative and have already given false information to the police 629-827- Standard-Examin- 2 FARMINGTON -
