But if you’re bringing up Darrl Kerrigan of Cooloroo Australia you might be stretching it a bit - until you meet him his family and see his castle The Kerrigans live in an odd subdivision next to a busy international airport and beneath a transmission lines set of As the Kerrigans grew so did their modest dwelling They’ve spent many an hour in the back yard around the barbie (no not the doll) In the background an occasional 747 would darken the skies as it took off The Kerrigans love their home and each other Darryl leads this little group as one of the most optimistic people you’ll ever meet His enthusiasm for life rubs off on his lovely wife whom you’d think was a gourmet chef the way Darryl carries on about her meals A typical conversation might be “My dear this looks absolutely delicious what do you call it?” “Meatloaf dear” high-pow- er “Boys why would you ever want to go to a restaurant when you can eat like this at home?” Talk about family pride Darryl displays his daughter’s diploma from beauty college as if she’d won the Nobel Prize He beams at his son Steve’s ability to find bargains in the local newspaper He has another boy who invents strange stuff but to Dad he’s a budding genius Even the oldest boy who resides in a nearby prison for taking part in a robbery was simply involved in “an innocent mistake” Unfortunately the world of the Kerrigans is about to be turned upside down The airport is undergoing a major expansion The law allows the airport authority to take what land is necessary That means the Kerrigans will have to give up their dream castle after all these years and find a new place to live Darryl refuses to move This is his home The courts laugh in is face He fights the issue all the way to the Supreme Court This simple story turns out to be one of the funniest and most charming tales of the year Combine the love of a family with a dogged determination to keep what’s theirs and you have an adorable film with truly unique characters “The Castle” shot on a shoestring budget in Australia became a hit there at the Sundance Film Festival last year and is now back for you to see Please don’t miss the opportunity to catch the Kerrigans in action - a film I will definitely be adding to my collection when it eventually comes out on video Miramax Films ‘THE CASTLE’: Anthony Simcoe Anne Tenney Michael Caton Sophie Lee Enc Bana Wayne Hope and Stephen Cuny (left to right) star in this film about a family who lives in a house too near an international airport This big Aussie hit of 1 997 got rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998 Rob Sitch: ‘There’s room for everyone at “The Castle” have a fear of Jedi mind tricks “Sorry just having a little fun with ya It’s Rob Sitch director of Dad in this upbeat film was patterned after his own father director says By STEVE SALLES If ‘The movie cntic Standard-Examin- you want to choke on your try this for a phone call “Hello” “Hi Fm calling for Steve Salles” “You’ve got him” “This is George Lucas” n and I’m “Right Obi-Wa- Kenobi” (Pause) First thought: He’s heard I trashed “Star Wars” and he’s going to use a Jedi mind trick on me Second thought: It’s one of my wise-gu- y friends who knows I Castle’ ” Talk about an icebreaker This Australian upstart also has the Sitch audacity to open his tiny little film in the same week as “Star Wars: Episode I” Go figure Then again it makes sense Nothing could be more opposite than “The Castle” a film that was the biggest Aussie hit of 1997 got rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998 and is now back in Utah in 1999 “The Castle” took days to shoot at a cost in the neighborhood of a half a million dollars The biggest expense was putting the family whose house was used in the film up in a hotel for two weeks The family dog had to be put in a kennel -nearly a budget-bustThe story centers around the Kerrigan family of Cooloroo Australia They’re a simple happy bunch living in a ramshackle home that just happens to be sitting at the end of an international airport runway A development company has exercised the country’s eminent domain clause and is forcing the Kerrigans and their neighbors to 1 er KAPBrosBOHErfA JUKE S ‘T’ 1999 Summer In the film the family pool room was the center of the many Kerrigan achievements The same in Sitch’s home The pool table made by dad had a natural lean to the left which made for an interesting game After chatting with Sitch for Kenley Centennial N Wasatch Drive Layton 493 JUNE Junction City Big Band -
