Show t i From Page One 6A Friday May 21 1999 Medicine From 1A price Some doctors for example are incorporating alternative medicine therapy into their traditional practices Other physicians have become increasing vocal in their criticism They say many of the claims made by alternative medicine practitioners are unsubstantiated and that their colleagues now dancing to its drumbeat are only doing so because they want in on the money Especially now that managed health care is cramping salaries in the medical field “I think there’s a lack of understanding on their part” said Layton physician and acupuncturist Paul Barney Barney onto a strictly traditional family practitioner began offering acupuncture therapy at his Health and Wellness Clmic eight years ago "Professors in medical schools are telling their students herbs and alternative treatments are useless” he said “Yet they’ve never taken the time to look into the literature themselves” Barney admits the acupuncture side of his practice is doing well accounting for up to 80 percent of his business on some days But he said his interest in the procedure began as a way to help chronic pain sufferers “Rather than tell a patient there’s nothing more that can be done I can offer this” he said As well as alleviating pain Barney said the therapy has also helped his patients with abnormal menstrual cycles and poor digestion Despite critics Barney like other alternative medicine practitioners says he senses a growing acceptance for practices like his by those in the traditional medical community Some local doctors are even referring patients to him for acupuncture therapy he said But even among skeptical doc-tothere’s a growing curiosity about different alternative medicine treatments A big reason for that is because physicians want to be aware of any potential reactions an alternative treatment might have with one they prescribe to a patient For example a doctor who rs prescribes an artificial such as Prozac might want to know if their patient is taking a natural uncontrolled such as St John’s Wort and what the problems are of taking them both at the same time To help doctors with those questions Kay Lynne McDou-ga- l executive director of the Ogden Surgical Society said several alternative medicine practitioners were invited to speak at the society’s annual conference last week She said an acupuncturist who also works as an anesthesiologist a massage therapist and a Roller spoke before a crowd of primarily traditional doctors Rolling is a form of deep muscle massage “There was less resistance to this than there would have been in the past” McDougal said “During a session physicians said maybe 80 percent of their patients were participating in some form of alternative therapy” she said “The physicians will work better if he understands what other treatments his patients are taking” Sam Shoemaker acting dean of the University of Utah College mediof Medicine said first-yecal students now take six hours of alternative medicine study The school has required it since 1997 as part of its introduction to medicine course In doing so the school joined a growing number of medical schools across the country either mandating some study or providing optional courses in alternative medicine “We felt it was important for students to have some appreciation of the types of treatments their patients are taking” Shoemaker said Insurance companies throughout the US are also taking notice of consumer demand for alternative medicine An increasing number of them are covering procedures such as acupuncture and massage for certain ailments None of the three biggest insurance carriers in the state -Regents Blue CrossBlue Shield Intermountain Health Care or United Healthcare -
