Show FOR THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE As an a public organization whose whole ob eject Is IB advancing tho the interests Inte of salt sall lake city in particular and of the whole territory in general the salt bait lake chamber of commerce ba has a splendid opportunity to display ability of a high order in the work of the coming season in the important depart apartment ment assigned to it the chamber should receive the full and hearty support aupp of every public spirited citizen in the way of material assistance asa istance with funds and with suggestions suggestion iii as to 0 o lines line in which advance may be profitably made at present there are before the chamber promotion schemes aid plans for a generous advertising of salt bait lakes resources which no doubt will receive the most careful attention and from which in all probability suitable measures to effect the desired purpose will be evolved A chief aim of judicious advertising is to brini bring in a desirable class clan of citizens with capital and energy to inaugurate and build no enterprises that will prove of permanent benefit to those who dwell here it if this purpose is achieved it means that the population of this city will be largely in creased cre aeed there are some who are so 0 o sanguine upon this point as to declare that here there are ample facilities for a thriving metropolis of half balf a million inhabitants whose people could be supported in comfort in utah U tabs 9 capital witti out the usual unpleasant feat acm of crowd crowding lagg and III health and poverty that characterize all large cities elsewhere that la is it if public matters were conducted in view of the general advantages which we possess these claims we will not attempt to dispute for there is a great future before ball bait lake and utah in securing additions to our population from the great cities of the east however there Is one point not to eight of to insure success euc oese A great inducement du for eastern people to change to is that in their present abodes they are too crowded they do not have breathing room their streets are too of often ten narrow and biogy when they come to utah they are filled with admiration at the broad oven open streets they breathe freer in the abundance of fresh pure air ah and clear sunlight and there Is a thrill of liberty libel ty such as they have nut not experienced before they long to enjoy it and to leave it as a heritage to their childred but there la is one feature which rises to in their winds minds as an objection to salt lake as a th thickly bokly populated city I 1 and hence they hesitate in the east they have close streets and crowded thoroughfares but they have spacious and numerous nume rouB parks which are a pride and a joy in salt lake we have the she wide beautiful streets but the parks are Jac lacking klog and the looks with a nameless na dread to the closely built city that comes of necessity with a dense population and its want of sufficient parks for breathing places which not even the spacious streets can supply to the extent desirable we are filled with praise of the wisdom and foresight of the pioneers who laid out this city and founded this territory but in an important respect their wise foresight is in being measurably unheeded the open public grounds which at one time were de signed for every district of the municipality have been diminished some borne have been wholly devoted to labor pur purposes podes though hough some remain to a limited extent union square is occupied by the university buildings and in time a portion of the grounds there may be suitably parked agricultural square to is used for the ekpo expo exposition buh buildings dings and grounds WILD was less than half of it left for general public purposes washington square la is taken up by the city and county building its grounds being laid out in a most manner for public use fuse plo pioneer aee or square was donated for a railway d depot but is now abandoned and remains a barren spot that to is a reproach to the municipality besides this we have liberty park destined to be a most beautiful place and capitol hill another fine location yet altogether the total available parking grounds in the city are under acres in extent at a recent ele election tion baltimore ty by po pop ular ilar vote authorized the investment of in another park the property to is clifton the country place ol of the late johns hopkins sod and it gives a large acreage to ti public purposes then baltimore has druid hill park acres patterson park acres federal hill riverside and carroll carrol parks park all of large acreage be eldes aides a dozen or more small park from two to six acres in extent every section of the city has it its country place and playgrounds and in all tola thin grand system of parks the affairs are so conducted that there la Is oo no burden on the taxpayers the latter a condition which probably can not be reached by bait lake but la is a reminder rem ioder of opportunities which have been it was waa accomplished by balti more granting railway franchises to in the city conditioned on the payment of nine per cent of the gross revenues to the park commission from this source the park revenues amount to nearly a year As was aptly expressed in a recent report of the system the street railway business flourishes and the only difference between belwood baltimore and other cities in this respect is that the companies compa have to pay the city and not the politicians lor for their franchised franchisee franch isee sese now the chamber of cf commerce cannot give to us all that baltimore has bag but it can inaugurate a movement by which all our public parks will be retained and improved and their number and extent be added to as opportunity offers and occasion requires thus may be re moved the only notable objection which exita to salt bait lake as am a city desirable above all others east or wet west for homes this thin will not re quire buird a great outlay of means in the direction indicated the making of im prove proVO MOLtS may come in due time when circumstances are favorable favo favorably but it demands the institution of a definite public policy by which everybody shall be assured that no AS salt lake increases in population her inhabitants shall have other breathing places and her children other playgrounds than the streets the lungs of a great city to be healthful must not be thoroughfares for business bu sineas and raffle they should be parks parka and gardens with all the freshness and beauty belonging thereto in regard to pioneer square there is one no proposition which the chamber 0 could look lok into and which would rei ceide toe of every good citizen it also would be giving important assistance to the educational department of the city not long jong ago the city board of education was looking tor for a place for a city high school and there was a project to secure a little spot of ground where the old county court house now stands which w blob project fortunately failed but jutt one block from the old coulty court coun house stands unused a beautiful tul ten acres the grandest spot in the city from a historic point of view pioneer square to what more appropriate I 1 i use could the old fort the identical ideL spot where them the pioneers first rested rented in this valley and called it il by the endearing title of home be put than for the chit chief f edior dional structure of the pioneer city ot of the rocky mountains not the cramped spot formerly proposed but spacious well situated grounds why bot give to salt lake city school dietrict dittri ct the right to use two and a halt half acres in the center of the east side of pioneer square tor for a high school building on condition that the remaining seven and a halt half acres be kept in order by the school district as aa a public park pioneer square should never be put to a baser use than the best within reach of the municipality the intellectual and physical development of we the olty cites youth the precept in ID adv advertising ve salt lake li Is in sending lending out pamphlets and reading reacting matter and aad having displays dia playe all are necessary but the real basis of success la Is to accompany company ao these by the example of doing something Bom ething at home in the way of development public or private by business industrial educational and other which are convincing proof of tue toe de termination to do as well as to say to work at working as well as at talking |
