Levere tb franklin co mas maa and was baptized by elder winslow farr in the winter of and came to nauvoo in the fall of 1842 and to 10 salt lake city in 1860 he came to arizona in 1880 aiace which time he has made his home in the st johns stake of zion at ai ng erville except abou aboud I 1 three years jears which he spent in mexico father holden leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss lose he came down to mesa city to spend the winter in in this warm climate and on the ath last was run over by a horse and buggy which injured his left side and back from the effects of which be died he died in full hope of a glorious resurrection for it can de be said h hi was a good latter latier day saint he held the office of ofa a high priest cox COM a G D GREER LUNA socorro county NM N M heber ward february 12 1895 A sorrowful and bereaved feeling has pervaded the breasts of the people of this ward the past three weeks on account of the death of our beloved brother and worthy bishop 0 D greer who departed this life january 22 1895 after ten ien days of severe pain and suffering caused by internal rupture all was done for hinl him that it seemed possible to do through the adminis ration of the priesthood and by bits bin family and kind friends to save his bis life but it appears he was destined to be called to lador in another sphere he was born january 20 1860 being comparatively ively a young man at tiie the time of hits bis death and leaves a loving wife and six children to mourn his departure the mother of the deceased who resides at concho arizona arrived here two days after this mournful event and was grief stricken over the sudden demise of her dutiful and loving son the family decided to have tho the remains taken to st arizona as the father and other members of the family were interred in the burial ground at that place before leaving i 0 he family residence the people irom from all aver the valley gathered around to take a farewell look on the features of him who had so ably and faithfully served them in the capacity of bisho bishop lor for the past seven years the phody body in charge of dr platt arrived in 8 st johns on the evening of the the funeral ceremonies were held in the ibe meeting houie houe houi hou e at that place on sunday january the people turned out en an matise masse out of respect to the memory of the deceased who had re bided tided there a number of years previous to being called as bissop of heber ward the speakers on the ahe occasion were elders david 11 gibbous gibbons and E N freeman PASO also bishop C anderson elder eider N P john sou on president ol of tho the high priest quorum 1 orum aud and patriarch H J platt of st 11 johnc binig bishop greers greer s first counselor counselors W H thompson still and elder C hampshire ot of heber ward all who spoke eulogized the memory of the deceased ae several oral of them having been moot moist intimately associated socia ed ted with him for a number of years tes tea tiled to his unswerving integrity honesty and faithful tankful nes nee and also aloo his being a fearless advocate in the cause of truth he maist mastered ered the spanish language and tilled a maision to 10 the indian i as well as preaching to some of the mexican population of st SL johns in that tongue As sia eta ed in the remarks ol of elder udall he was a keeper of records as well as accounts acou unis as the work he has left behind abundantly shows shown and it will be areat help to others other who may be called to follow in it his footsteps footstep he was first and foremost in all public work done in his hia ward as the records plainly show and his presence will be missed among those with whom he was called to labor he was modest and unassuming in manner and exemplary in his daily life and conversation vor dation brother greer was waa ordained a bishop by apostle john H smith in the year 1888 after the close of the services all who wished were permitted to view the remains the features of which looked calm and peaceful the funeral cortege con sistine of twenty six vehicles well filled with people slowly wended bended its way to the graveyard on the hill where the body was laid to rest in peace and await the resurrection of the just 0 HAMPSHIRE WILLIAM H DARGER william H darger died at spanish fork ork utah county november 11 1894 of heart failure and general debility super induced by la grippe after an illness of three years vears deceased was born may 14 1815 i in the town of berwarth housen north hanover germany he was the son of ludwig darger and justine albright he emigrated to america iu in the year 1836 and resided in new york and in april 1844 married martha J soper who was instrumental in bringing him to a knowledge of the great lat ter day work one year later he was baptized after residing in new york some time he moved west as far as st joseph joseoh mo where he and his wife suffered severely with the cholera and lost all their clothes and bedding it having been thrown into the river not having means to go on to utah he stayed at st joseph and worked at his trade as a tailor till the spring of 1852 when he moved on to utah and after months of weary travel with ox train be arrived in salt lake city and settled in the fourteenth ward where he labored in various duties in the priesthood under the direction of bishop A hoagland he passed through the hardships of the famine caused by the destruction of the crops by grasshoppers also took an active part with his brethren in the echo canyon war in the time lime of the general 4 move he located in spanish pork fork where he continued to reside till the time of his death he was a faithful and zealous laborer in the cause of zion being actively engaged in various callings in the priesthood especially as a peacemaker among his brethren he was frequently called upon to administer to the sick as aa he be possessed the gift of healing to a remarkable degree for many years he was a faithful laborer in the sabbath school the decease ds first wife and six children have passed way away he leaves a wife two sons and a daughter three grandchildren and numerous frien friends dato to mourn his him loss icom COM CHARLOTTE EGGLESTON OGDEN F feb eb 11 1895 Yeat yesterday erday the funeral services over the remains of sister charlotte eggleston were held at the fifth ward meeting house bouse at 12 A goodly number of relatives and friends gathered to pay their last tokens of respect to the departed dead sister eggleston was boru born in the parish of leigh county of kent england on the bilth february 1817 she was the daughter of reuben osborn and charlotte hesmer and lived with her parents at the village of leigh till at the age of seventeen she became the wife of john nye of tunbridge and to them six lone and one daughter were born in the year 1862 1852 with her husband and family lar nily she emigrated to australia during the gold excitement of that period in the latter part of 1856 the whole family famiie were baptized into the church of jostle jesus christ of tatter latter day saints and on new years day 1869 1859 mailed out of the head of melbourne bay on the ship milwaukee with a company of saints numbering thirty souls soula under the direction of elder thomas 8 johnson Joh naon after seventy nine days at sea without seeing land or sail they reached san francisco on march A stay in california of a year and a hall bait enabled the family to earn and secure a four horse team with which to cross the plains this was accomplished in the fall of 1860 A company of 20 wagons assembled at carson city and under the leader leadership hip of elisha eliaha malroy of willow creek box elder county traversed the humboldt route to utah being harrasser harra harr saed assed by indians indiana the whole distance and rea reaching ebing ogden about the middle of october they spent the first winter at the old east weber fort uintah and in april moved to ogden and with her family took up her abode on the block on which the fifth ward meeting house now stands in the fall of 1861 her husband john nye was called with many others to go south mouth on a mission to make a settlement at what is now the city of st george in southern utah where he afterwards died from exposure and the hardships encountered in those early days As time rolled on sister charlotte became the wife of brother henry eggleston with whom she dwelt till his death in february 1884 the last eight years she has made her home with her son ephraim H nye during all these years yeara slater sister eggleston has lived the life of a faithful and consistent latter day saint she was wad identified with the womans comans relief belief association and one of its ita hardworking hard working members tor for many years yeara she was 78 years of age lacking 3 8 days she leaves six sons three of whom have performed foreign missions and one more is now in england as a missionary also one daughter thirty two grandchildren and nine great grandchildren she died on the morning of february 8 of old age firm in the faith of the gospel of peace and in the hope of a glorious resurrection during all the years of her residence in utah she has been a living monument of the great latter day work of god on the earth prior to the time the gospel found her she was a great sufferer a victim of that dread disease consumption sump Lion and for more than a year had lain bolstered up in her bed u unable to rise the physicians declared it impossible for her to live and dail daily L the family expected her death when the tle mormon elder came upon the scene he was invited into her room and there he taught the principles of the gospel of peace she said that la is what I 1 have longed to hear all my life the result was an improvised bed upon an ox dray and a journey through a dense forest seven miles then carried out into a swamp and there be bap pt lazed into the church of jesus christ of latter day sal at ate the belder elder while in the act of confirming that night uttered a prophecy declaring that thai she should live to go to the land of zion I 1 and dwell there for many years she should live as 88 long as she desired life and her last days should be her bust best for thirty four years she has lived and enjoyed these blessings here in ogden COM CYRUS W BATES cyrus W batos bates who died in grants ville utah on the of january lacking six days of being 68 yean old was born in the town of henderson Hende raon Jef lerson county state of new york on january 22 1827 he joined the mormon church in his bis youth in new york and journeyed to nauvoo by team he wab somewhat acquainted with the prophet joseph smith and adit nauvoo just twenty days before joseph and hyrum were killed the church becoming scattered he did not return to nauvoo but went back to new york where he was married to harriet E matthews matthew together they moved to wisconsin where they lived some twelve years daring this period gold was discovered in california californi a an and d in 1852 in company with a brother and brother in law he went there returning in 1854 on his tourney journey home he with all on board were ship wrecked and he was with some survivors landed on a barren rocky shore where they remained six days da va with but very little to eat re he again took passage for home where he arrived in due time but he suffered aft partial sunstroke in crossing the of darien which affected him for years yeara afterwards in 1862 himself and family came to utah where he agalla identified himself with the church he settled in grantsville Grants ville tooele county where he has since lived he has gervea served as selectman of tooele thoele county two op three times also as justice of the peace deace of that precinct and when grantsville Grant Grants aville ville was waa incorporated he was elected mayor serving two terms I 1 think he also served several terms as one of the councilors councillors counci lors of that city and was occupying that po position posidio sitio at the time of his death he was unfortunate in some respects respect st having lost his right hand band in a threshing machine also the sight of one of his eyes the funeral services took place on SU sunday n day january the deceased belonged to the high priests esal quorum when he died and members of that quorum noted acted as pallbearers pall bearers at his bis funeral COM |
