the doctrines chev were sent forth to expound LDER GEORGE J woodbury who was in charge of the com company alyre resides in st george Georg when ewhen at joine home and was only in his year when he went upon his mission mig sion anich was in oct 1883 on arriving arrivi in the south he was assigned to the west un 1 ast tennessee conference on which includes the middle and western co counties bales and labored for the first six months in company y with elder J J fuller during dialog this time they succeeded in opening a new field for missionary labor in lawrence county and baptizing about 20 persons sons in april elder T rh H robins became kis his companion and they continued together about a year in august 1881 at the time odthe of the massacre of elders berry and gibbs they were in the next county and one week subsequently went to td lauderdale Laud ordale county to attend a two days meeting while there elders fuller and woodbury went to the house of a friend to stay staf over night and about 11 pm m after having retired to bed and kalea fallen asleep they were set upon by a inoa 0 of nine or ten armed men the first tile the elders koew knew of their presence they were rudely awakened awake Hed presence by y the mob who surrounded their bed brandishing theu weapons and ordered them to arise aress fesa themselves and accompany them to the woods the brethren proceeded tennessee unesse but buc somewhat also aiso in lee vo 0 o virginia lie t le met with fair success sac cess and as a 8 rule received kind and hospitable hospit ablie treatment he was many times threatened by bigoted and lawless persons and in one instance when in company with elder Ito skelly was assailed by a mob who followed and threw stones at them but they escaped without injury A number of miraculous cases ot of healing occurred mccurr id also during his experience peri ence some of which have already been reported to the NEWS in company with other elders he succeeded in establishing establish in branches in campbell union and hawkins counties tennessee and sunday schools in the first two and greatly enjoyed his labors on the whole vh ole he also mentions as a noticeable fact that b ad many of taase in the region where he labored who have in the past mobbed or otherwise been active in opposing the saints Saint have shave died suddenly or had some serious misfortune overt overtake ake them he found a great deal of ignorance as w wll all as prejudice in the south in relation to the character of the saints and their doctrines he talked with one man a representative to the state legislature from hawkins county who ho acknowledged to have voted tor the passage of the antipo anti auti po law in that state and yet did not know what the word polygamy meant ELDER THOMAS DAVIS whose home is in fillmore started on his mission oct 9 1883 and labored in mississippi for tile the first 25 months the remainder of tile the time lie he spent in alabama where there is rather a more liberal feeling in the matter of religion than prevails in mississippi while I 1 his mission was very interesting and enjoyable to himself he feels that there axe are few features connected witti with it that would be of special iii interest terest to others lie he had gad the pleasure of making known the principles of the gospel to a great many people and found a few willing to accept of I 1 is he fared well generally never lacking lackin a friend but of course like nearly dil ail the other elders sent to that not escape the threats ot of ene enemies wiep he did manage to escape actual via lence however though he had some 1 close calls 11 upon one occasion while he and elder eider crandall Cra udall were staying staging at the house of one of tile the saints in jones county mis mias contained only one small branch of the church but since then two others have been established in york and counties and during the present presen winter a new field has also been aaen opened up in he toe the people of that region exceedingly hospitable pi table and though they were mere gener 7 illy ally greatly prejudiced against the latter day saints would seldom refuse to entertain the elders elders though they would frequently decline de cline to listen to an anything hing concerning the gos goar pe pel he often succeeded in obtaining a hearing by simply announcing himself as a suddenly surrounded by a mob and then their host on discovering the situation yelled to 10 the elders to run elder bider cragun who had taken off his shoes to retire to beil bed ran for the woods and found him they remained there the rest of the night too for the family were afraid to have them return to the house they baptized two persons the next morning aud and continued I 1 so to do afterwards though their subsequent visits to the place were made more secretly the man who led the mob in that instance was an old ku klux leader and the others 25 in all were much of the same class the wound brother cragun received in his chin has troubled him more or less ever since sot not hav having ill been properly treated when it was wa I 1 first st received while in greenville county he be and his companion held a meeting one night in a private house where they were strangers stran gerg and without making known to baat waat church they belonged the me audience was and a wealthy man immediately invited them to hold forth the next evening at his house they did so but by this time they had become known however many were still anxious to hear more aua and petitioned for the use nse of the church for them to preach in permission was granted but before evening arrived a prea preacher alier by the tae name of bowers a noted mooD shiner had collected a mob and threatened if they preached it should be at their peril and so they had to seek lodgings in tae woods that brother cragun related a number of gf other interesting incidents connected with ins ills labors illustrating the
