Show correspondence missionary experience IN TUB CAROLINAS NATION S U C dec 13 1886 editor deseret news on the of I 1 started to jill ail a tais mission sion tu to the southern states where I 1 am now now laboring atter after a long but pleasant journey of 2500 miles I 1 reached the south caro liaa conference in which I 1 was waa assigned to labor on the fth day of february my labors began in spartan burg bur county BC S C bince then i have labored in tive five counties in south caro lina and two in north carolina the lord has bad blessed we me with the best of health thus far and I 1 have been an instrument mentin ment in his bis hands bands in helping to open one field of labor in which there has been about 15 added to the told fold of christ I 1 have seen the power of god made manifest on numerous occasions in healing tile me sick I 1 have had four traveling companions have most all kinds of people good bad and indifferent have hafso some inu little persecution but nothing that has proven bodily injurious in connection with parley P F bingham Bing bam of wilson ward who came out when I 1 did clid I 1 have been trying to open another new field of labor an aal account of whick which might be well to relate oct we started on our trip and made our way into union county N C where we arrived on the of the same mouth month we ve at once found a few friends friend saud and held one meeting there being about 50 persons present friends began to multiply and we were invited to hold meeting in a baptist church called red leavel about seven miles distant distan t t the he next sunday night we filled the appointment and while the meeting me etine was in progress there were some esome young men outside throwing stones at the church our friends took the matter in hand and informed them that if they did nor noc desist the law would be ki enforced breed and order was from that time preserved for a few weeks our friends continued to increase band and we held from three to tour four meetings a week we got the privilege of holdin holding meetings in the churchman church named aed at our dessure Nes P pleasure sure but we left all appointments to the people we now bad two neighborhoods to labor in and the people were very much interested la in both we had so 0 many invitations to visit the friends we had made that it was impossible lor for us to comply with ith them all F the principal newspaper odthe of the county and one or two doing what they could to prejudice the people against us but V it seemed that the people paid but little or no attention to 10 their ravings our f friends informed them that all people had bad i a tight right to worship as they saw fit some of the peo people I 1 le told us that they had been praying yo for r the lord to send ills his servants to them just as they were sent anciently and toey thought that we were sent in answer to their prayers it was no doubt true that we were directed there in answer to their prayers our f friends were so numerous avers a and our enemies so few that opposition was almost out of the question in fact we were so surprised with our success as the like was so uncommon la in the southern mission that questions like these began to arise in our minds Is s satan asleep does he be not know that we are the servants of the lord are we not doing our duties or is there so much of the blood ol of israel flowing in the peoples veins that satan lias has no power to stir them up against us etc etc we soon found however that the dragon was up to ais business and not yet vet bound anthe on the evening of november while holding meeting in a private house bouse near red eed leavel there were seven young men came in and listened with attention until after services were they told us that their business was to kindly invite us to leave the neighborhood before harsh measures were used they only gave us a verbal notice and we thought per haps they were the only ones that were connected with it and we puid euid but little attention to it we had bad a meet meeting ug appointed down in our first neighborhood at the residence of N H bigham lor for sunday sunda at ila 11 a mNo vember on sat saturday U i we went to his place to stay over night about 8 0 clock in the ey evening ening while we were quietly resting ourselves there were about sixty horsemen supplier inside with whisky rade up to the house and called for the mormon preachers the gentleman and lady of the house bouse stepped to the door and told them that we were present and asked what we were wanted tor for they said that they wished to see us and requested that we come out mr bigham told them that we were not cowing coming out neither would he be al low them to come iu in they then said that they bad come to tell ius to leave the county by 9 the next morning mor and that chat we must not kletthe let the sun rise and sit on us another day in union cou county ty or we would be used roughly mr r bigham asked their names and told them to leave his bis place they said they them bad left their names at home and they would leave the place when they got ready they then handed him a notice for us aud and then went off shouting like den demons ions and shooting ag off their guns the notice was as as folio follows Ws november 1886 union co N C last notice to lo the bonnow you must and shall leave our c county forthwith there are men in our part art of the county that will see to it W we will meet you at red leavel Lea veltor to morrow night you shall not talk in our county get out at once after the mob hadlett had left we were afraid they would get some more liquor and return again so we took a path through the woods and went about a half mile to the house of another friend named baker we had only been there a few minutes when we heard beard them comin coming gand and they showed their wrath by using profane language we arose and left the house went along the alie lence fence and climbed oyer over it into the pasture while doing so we broke a rail which they must have heard for some ot them followed us while two went up to the house bouse and pretended to want to see one of mr bakers bakera boys who was waa not at home the ba balance lancel of them remained out in the road a few hundred yards from the house when we learned that they were following fOl lOwIA us we ran down through the pasture and very carefully climbed over the fence again and started to the tot lot a hiding biding place but they were so close to us that necessity compelled us to lie down in the grass in the open field to keep them from seeing us while they were talking and walking around within a few rods of us many reflections passed through my mind I 1 thought how bow similar our position was to that of the apostles in former days and many in the latter days and also of our savior himself I 1 also thought of my loved mountain home and notwithstanding the great danger we were in it was with difficulty that we kept still enough to kep keep our enemies en eiBie from hearing us after all ail became quiet we returned to mr hir bakers house and stayed the re maguder of if the night without being molested 1110 bested we beld meeting next day according to appointment and all was peace and quietness the mob was composed of professed christians mostly methodists As they would not let their names be known we thought perhaps that would be the last of the trouble so we concluded to stay a lew few days and ascertain if possible what their intentions were we learned that they went to red bed leavel to meet u ua s as stated in the notice not net finding U us at the church they searched the hoa bouse of one of our friends but their efforts were fruitless we did not have any meeting appointed at bed leavel as they supposed we had so it etwas was not necessary for us to be there learning afterwards that they had been searching ifor for us aga inland hearing a few other reports we were convinced that they were ward determined in their purpose so thought bethought we it best to heed the injunction of the savior when they persecute you in one city flee ye into another matt 10 23 consequently on december ath we cro crossed into south carolina and are now low among the saints we left a great many good friends in union county and some who expressed themselves themselves as being entirely convinced of the truth of the gospel and would have been baptized before we left lef t them but bat they thought circumstances would not permit at bresett pre sett it was witla with regret that we left them but to preserve our bodies from injury we thought it wisdom to do so we trust that in tb the a future the lord will open the way that much good may maybe be done in that section of country and thit that many may mav be added to the fold of christ oh list I 1 have enjoyed my labors thus far the best kind and do not cot feel in ID the least discouraged but bui my determination is to press presa forward and do all in my power to help to advance t jhb h f cause of truth for I 1 know that tue work of god is onward and though satan may his imps howl how yet the purposes pui poses of 0 the lord will wil billotte lotte abot be overthrown some way may fall by the wayside but there will be enough who will remain faithful to carry on the works of the almighty I 1 would encourage all my 3 oung brethren in my weak way to be diligent irk in performing ming their duties and improve every opportunity that is afforded them to help make their improvement associations a grand success let us ua all try and get ae ane spirit of the lord to guide aide us in all things that we e may be ab abler gle tos to shun hun all evil and e cleave aa eave unto that which Is gaoa for the ahne is near at hand band when all that are left in zion will be called holy they which are not holy will be sifted out and carried away as chaff before the wind we may think there is plenty of time for us no doubt the people in the days of noah thought there was plenty of time tor fox to repent belore before the flood would come but they left it a little too long and the flood came and took thew them all away so will it be when the savior comes for he says that As it was in the days of noah so shall it be at the coming of the son of man aud to paul 2 buess i 1 8 he will come in fi naming aming fire taking vengeance upon them that know not god and obey not the gospel nial iiii ill 2 who shall ahall ablee the dayot day ot his coming let us be faithful that we may not dot be among those who will be calling for the rocks to fall on thera them to hide them from his face I 1 hope and loray that the blessings of the lord loid will be wi with h all I 1 irael love a and nd lesyea a ill i to all the saints and kind frien friends s I 1 remain as ever your brother and co laborer la irk the gospel of christ M D FERRIN I 1 PAINS AND PLEASURES OF TIVE THE PARISIANS PA PARIS Is idaho december 24 1881 1884 editor deseret winter has at last set in and at present writing old boreas I 1 is coill doing g his level best basi to pile up toe the beautiful on the lee ice side of every conceivable obstruction st while the pedestrian who has to face the powerful blizzard can amply testify to the force and penetrating aratin capacity of a bear lake nor leaker but we have no DO reason to complain of f our winter weather thus tar far as we have not had until today to no day sufficient snow to afford sleighing alq and while the eastern states have hai bad enough to blockade the railways and while you Sait Lakers nave have been enjoy jig your sealskin seal skin bacques sac ques and sleigh rides we bear lakers have been e enjoying na i g wheel locomotion andi and bahniy balmy y spring pring like weather and the canons have been teeming with men and horses getting out timber a better time rime for such wo k could not have been desired as sufficient snow had bad fallen in the mountains to greatly facilitate such labor the brethren availed themselves ot of the favorable opportunity and the consequence is a very large quantity of timber er firewood etc has been piled up conveniently awaiting sufficient snow when it will be hauled on sleighs to the different settlements since the election politics has been at a very low ebb the antl mor imor mons were so badly beaten that they have not yet been able to reci their disappointment in annot innot mot being able to get their handson hands on the public purse and to revel on the he peoples finances bein being so great that the party is completely ale tely routed and demoralized at the special election for county surveyor v or th they ey only mustered two paltry votes to the peoples 55 it is true however thaP two of the nominees we were elected reelected to office but this result was accomplished by the treachery and deception of a few pretended pretend eq friends but who proved themselves t traitors to the peoples party it is a sad commentary on our boasted democracy when a sickly and irresponsible minority governs and controls a great anti and thriving majority especially is this the case when that majority of law abid ing citizens are deprived of every right guaranteed thim them by the constitution of our country in idaho today to day we suffer taxation without representation because we belong to the all our vested rights are taren from us and political slavery has been introduced d need upon free american soil while the minions dris tile the traps satraps sa who have been the most loudmouthed loud mouthed in declaiming against liberty and constitutional rights and the most insidious workers in undermining them and laying the foundation of religious big bigotry etry intolerance and political serfdom they are the men whom the people of idaho have chosen to represent them in the territorial legislature and an d in the halls of congress an impure fountain cannot send forth pure water if the people choose such lawmakers law makers they may expect just such for a stream cannot rise higher than its fountain head bead i i considering the position tiou we are placed in politically ayd the wounds we have received ived in the house of our friends the democrats the people feel well in fact aside iro mour our political disadvantages we hay havo many things thing sto to he thankful for and taking all things into consideration our position will compare favorably with other communities of the saints and while the efforts of our enemies have been to deprive Us of all our rights and drive us from our homes and peaceful possessions their poisoned shafts have fallen harmless ut at our feet and we enjoy that peace that our enemies never knew possessing our souls in patience knowing that those inalienable rights which have ben been so ruthlessly torn from froin us will all be restored I 1 and the names of he authors aids and abettors abet tors of our persecutions will yet be held in derision the and alth of january are I 1 he lays days set for our officers elect to qualify f Y those rhose officers elected on the ant anti 1 mormon Morn Bon ticket are having considerable difficulty in getting bondsmen with a fair prospect of not obtaining them as very few feel like risking their property on adventurers who were elected on the anti mormon platform amalgamated with fraud and deception certion cep tion our ur stake tabernacle is nearly ready for the roof and the necessary timber is being obtained this winter so go that on the opening of spring the roof will be put on and the bu building de ag pushed forward to completion respectfully yours NORVAL |
