| Show THE independent VOTER AS A POLITICAL FACTOR I 1 the he independent voters as I 1 propose to consider them nave have shown themselves able on several occasions to over rule and control the results of political combinations and in a manner entirely unexpected and unforeseen by the political leaders of either party who have had bad to abide by their deci oon eion when the circumstances were such that the leaders did not daro aura to override the will of the people so as ex pressed at the polls As AB a class they bey do not ide identify unify them selves with any political party as such but consider themselves free to vote for such men inen and such measures as may lu in their judgment be the best beet for the good of the whole they are often men of business or craftsmen craftsman who wish to attend to their own affairs and who while they do not mix up with and ala atals politics on the streets ar are intensely interested te in the problems lemp of government ernaie ern ment nL sad and jim in having honest mud capable men in office which la Is not the case with the usual politician who prefers fers men whom be can use corthe tor the promotion of his bid individual schemes either political or otherwise in fact tt it Is ia well known to 0 o wim them that when a man makes the loudest professions of intense anten is patriotism mud aud a desire to serve his bis country especially when his en bunia sm causes him to abuse every one who does not agree with him he wll will require the most moat watching as he to is more than ban likely to be studying his bin own personal interests inte in preference to the public welfare they are not indifferent but simply despise the men and the methods which lead and prevail in the usual political management they sometimes attend but do not frequent political meetings as I 1 once heard board an engineer remark that he did not propose to furnish packing for other folks pumps or make up a tail for another bartys k kite te they do not enthuse with the rabble who form the bulk of this tha torchlight and other processions professions process ions aud and pack the primary meetings and conventions convent ione but when a political Doli party think that they are so BO solidly in power they try to ride the country the sub ejects of our article vote very to 10 kick them out as aa was exemplified a few years ago when a party tried to saddle the force bill on the nation with the evident intention of perpetuating themselves in power the present practice of noisy primaries and conventions appears to be a great waste of energy judging by the results A few weeks since about men from each party met one in provo prove and the other in salt bait lake city at a great expense for transport transportation atio 0 1 m ind and orbr necessaries with the t b e result of nominating about six men each a striking example of the mountain bringing forth a mouse while to the ordinary ord luary observer it ic would appear to be of little moment which may bethe be the victor in the contest in such conventions convent looB it is often apparent that a few persons persona arrogate to i themselves the right to lead without any apparent qualification for so BO doing except unbounded bounded ua assurance and presumption aud and such leaders are not ao cepter by our independent voters they are no gene generally raly in favor of or opposed to bounties being given but reserve to themselves the right to vote in each particular instance on what they consider co alder sider the merits of the case cage and when bounties are dived they be lieve in the policy of russia which while giving a premium on home borne built ships demands that the ahe means so BO given snail samil be expended at home and that the means shall not dot be sent abroad unless it Is certain that the articles cannot be procured at home I 1 it t Is not apparent from past conditions condit loBs that either of the two great parties is in favor of woman suffrage but both are anxious to take the credit of joining in a movement which some of them see is bound to succeed although the opposition are worthy of admiration on the same principle as a certain old lady admired satan because of his perseverance in a hopeless cause where he did not have the satisfaction even of being in the lb right there la in one thing which may safely be in the event of woman suffrage becoming a an accomplished fact as it has already teen been proved in other places viz that the saloon and gambling element will be kept in the background and will not be permitted to run the governmental govern they do bow do to a great extent in some cities it will also be found that men who are not above reproach will be left out ont irrespective of their party affiliations affiliation a gd and especially so woon their offenses oft eose have ave been to the injury of the other sox sex in colorado the gang and machine politicians have already shown themselves opposed to the wo mena recently acquired freely exercised an they nealise realise that they and their methods are doomed to be relegated to that oblivion from which tor for the credit of the state tt it would have been better it if they had bad never dever been allowed to emerge in writing the above I 1 do not en dorae or disparage the voters referred to but call attention to an element that la Is seldom reckoned upon it must be apparent to any one who has stud the results of the presidential election in 1884 and since that it la Is not the he republicans or the democrats who carry the election but a minority holding the balance of power and who vote with either party as they think best beat at the time of action WM J SILVER |
