Show CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT the new business mens association the rumor of a contest over the position of president preel dent or some other cause had bad the effect of galvanizing the chamber of commerce with unwonted life and activity last evening about forty members assembled at the board of trade building at 8 and several of them carried in their pockets proxies of forty five absent members there were thus eighty fl five ve votes cast and the election of mr hubbard who has been for some time past openly and energetically working for the honor of filling colonel donnel lans shoes was consummated largely through the agency of the absentees many of whom would probably have voted for mr Well shad they been present but whose votes were cast for mr hubbard by that gent lemans active representatives his bis brother real estate men gillespie kelsey it was well understood that mr wells bad declined to do any canvassing to secure the presidency the utmost his big friends fr lenis were able to induce him to say having been that it the honor came to him he would take it he did not solicit it mr W H rows bowe had a number ot of proxies which were cast for mr welle well tut but they were not quite halt half the number secured by mr gillespie and hia alft partner jartner mr rowe himself secured the handsome compliment of being chosen first vice president with no op postil n and mr gillespies I 1 roxiey carried the 1 ay tor lor mr cameron as a sec second and vice president against george A lowe when the making up of the board was called mears gillespie and rowe bowe went into hito combination and throwing their proxies together elected the board named below mr rowe i bated that mr wells would prefer not to serve on the directory this year which la in the reabon none of the proxy combination vote went to him although nearly every member present gave him a vote DONNELLAN 98 REPORT president Don report of the th labors of the chamber for the last year was read by himself and la Is herewith given in full SAL r LAKE C CITY my utah jan 12 1893 to the members of the suit bait lake laka chamber of oom commerce merce gentlemen the year just closed has been a prosperous one for utah and salt gait lake city our merchants have enjoyed an active and profitable trade our city has hag grown largely in population am aa is witness eed by the fact that upwards of 1200 new houses have been built and occupied during the yearl year besides at least apartments and offices in the upper stories of business blocks this snows shows a healthy gain in the population of the city which is now estimated by every test teat short of actual census to be nearly the volume of business of the city as shown by operations of the clearing house amounted to which waa a gain over the previous year of the only business that languished during the your year was wag the dealing in real estate and yet the sales salea for the year amounted to nearly SS 8 many fine business structures have been erected nine elegant modern school houses house with all of the latest appliances ances for beating and ventilation have been built at a cost of about the university of utah has at large expense been equipped with now new apparatus in the department of geology and the school ot mines albo in the chemical and mathematical depart ments menta this institution is now prepared to give a tuil full university course of instruction and is entirely free to residents oi of the territory the great brigham young university is about to commence operations in a building which to Is just being finished all hallows college has doubled its at tendal tenda oe during the past year drawing its san students jents largely from the surround ing states the other colleges abado mile and aad young ladies seminaries of the city are favored with an increased attendance all of which clearly indicates that salt bait lake has already assumed a commanding position as an an educational center A fair start has been made in street paving and large contracts have been let to cover the remainder of the business district work upon which was commenced late in the year which will be renewed and carried to completion as soon as the trost frost disappears this paving is all to be of utah material thus providing an excellent test of the value of utah asphaltum for paving purposes A large factory is being erected in the city for the man manipulation of the if it proves proven obe 10 be a success sale anticipated by the own hers ere doubtless a large and profitable trade will spring up for this material in the paving of this and other omes between the missouri river and the pacific our now new city hall ball and county court house which when completed will have cost a halt half million dollars has been pushed with commendable energy and the structure is in sufficiently advanced to show what a magnificent building it will be good progress has been made during the year in grading of streets exten siou of water service and the sewers it Is to be hoped that the now new gravity sewer system proposed by the city engineer may be adopted by the city council and that means may be found to commence the work it is time that the city adopted some intelligent and h harmonious rmon tous system 0 of t public parks ond nd connecting boulevards the city owns a number of too ten acre blocks besides liberty park it also owns large tracts on the bench and up city creek canyon the city cemetery Is improperly I 1 located from a sanitary standpoint being on a hill bill side aide immediately above the most densely populated and most beautiful residence portion of the city the surface drainage of storm water as well as an the underground seepage set page from the cemetery flows down through this densely populated section there should be a cessation of burials in the cemetery A new one should be established several miles from the city where easily accessible by railroad and the remains removed from the present burial ground all the come terey converted into a public park the plans for this park and boulevard system should be adopted at once and the policy pursued hereafter of expending a certain amount in their improvement each year this city has been destined by nature to become a great health and pleasure resort its numerous hot mineral springs its excellent and health giving potable mineral waters that are ansu for table use its great inland salt sea bathing its majestic scenery its numerous mountain resorts its ita broad and shaded avenues and above all its pure ad a d invigorating air give it a unique post tion ion among the health resorts of the world these alone coupled with the fact that this is one of the most charming home places of the west and that it to is the social political religious and business center of a vast region of country are sufficient to maintain a population here of people in this connection attention li is called to the re diminution in the death rate as reported by the board of health since sewerage and sanitary regulations have been established if the mortality throughout the year could be maintained at the figures reported for last month it would be absolutely the healthiest city in the world in view of the foregoing it seems to me that salt lake city is progressing that its people are alive and very wide awake and aad that the record of t e year refutes the charges ot of the croakers croak era and calamity howlers bowlers how lers I 1 do not think that anything is gained by predicting all sorts of disasters by insisting for instance that railroad shops are to be removed to some other place notwithstanding the denials of the officials in charge and it to Is especially injudicious to publish in the daily papers this and other anticipated evils which may never happen thus giving aid and comfort to our enemies and would be alsand nv riv tending to weaken the confidence of the more timid of our own people as to the future of the city considering the great question that is agitating the financial world what to is the future of silver as a money metal it behooves us on to look around us and see how we can keep our people employed and how we can maintain the pro pr rem of our city in the event of the total cessation of silver mining personally I 1 have no fear that such an event will happen I 1 feel sure that american statesmanship will yet solve the silver problem and will restore to it ilits its functions of a full legal tender debt paying money but it if the worst should happen a careful perusal of that masterly and surprising compilation i of utah la varied resources contained in salt lake brouns ot of january lot will show that there are few places in this thin broad land so favored as this city is in natural sources of wealth and prosperity utah is in the largest producer of lead of auy of the states and terri lories many of the lead mines of the territory are worked sowe booie of the t he very highest grade silver mines will ol of course continue to be worked especially those containing considerable quantities of gold there are many gold mines in the territory gola occurs in paying quantities near camp djoya near the western border at osceola Oso eola nov nev the post gold mill is in now being profitably worker inthe Deep creek country gold to Is found in the marysvale Marys Mary vale district on indian creek in beaver county near piuche Pio chein in the monkey wrench district just over the border in nevada in the henry mountains and on too ban San juan Juao the colorado and green rivers large copper mines have been opened near st george and in the deep creek country the finer qualities qua lites of asphaltum pure hydro carbon are now being mined extensively and shipped east and are largely lar 9 ely used in the manufacture maLAu facture of fine varnishes tor for electrical appliances etc our coal measures are extensive and varied some borne coking coal has been found and our iron deposits are unsurpassed in extent and quality some borne of our coal now finds a market on the P coast and if we had a railroad of easy grade to the pacific our coal would become our chief article of ex port plaster of paris is now e ton manufactured and shi shipped pLed all over the pacific northwest cement and lime are also largely manufactured and exported we grow a aos manufacture sugar eager and cotton to a g limited extent at present our manufactures fao fac tures or of boots and shoes overalls overall etc etca find a market in all the sui surround round inic states going as far east as Den denver denvert the same is true of our blanko blankets tg hosiery and all kinds of woolen goods the great salt lake will yet prove n s mine mill of wealth to this city we should have here one of the largest larges chemical works in the country employing thousands of operatives the occurrence of cheap salt sal t cheap sulphur and limestone with natural gas for fuel give us all the elements for the economic production of hydrochloric hydro acid sulphuric acid faustio sods soda car bonato bonate and sulphate of soda to supply the demand of all the country between chicago and the pacific ocean W with the above articles with natural gas sand cheap soda and limestone all kinus kinds of ulass glass coula be manufactured manufacture here profitably the different articles produced froma from plastic and fire clay should be mauu mana factored here such as pottery sw brick crucibles cruci bles drain and sewer pip and tile for fireproof fire proof buildings I 1 if the big cottonwood cotton wood river coursed though the heart of the city with a fall of say feet to the mile it would be ba freely considered to be an Import important atA and valuable factor as a means of power in estimating the future importance or CW the city yet it cuts through toe wasatch mountains at its canfoti twelve miles from town with as great ik fall us tie above mentioned and it la is quite as valuable lor for power purposes as it if it were within the city limits there abeln only twelve miles of copper wire re quiren to transmit the power to the city I 1 am a 01 pleased to nae that R M W jones is in now engaged in the miC nary work of a great electric plane plant the power to be generated by the wafer of that stream he calculates on obtain ing horse borne power with once I 1 the water at the lowest lot winter biag by going up t tu W river a miles and rep ekly using water the power can be tit creased to bevera thousand horb horae power this will give cheap electric eleo elec irio trie power in the city for all kinds of small manufacturing such as running t machi machines uee clothing aej shoe facto factories factora rh glove factories 4 etc it will also furl fur nish electricity for the electric r railways the light plant etc cheaper than cara can be produced with coal it will ahab tend to abate the smoke nuisance mr jones thinks that his hia scheme off eraa very promising investment to capi capitalists he estimates the cost of a pla complete at and he has som assurance of the necessary capital broo from the east one of the crying needs of the city il is ia cheap fuel both for domestic anda manufacturing purposes and there hl been considerable agitation during t tire past few months upon the question much talk has been indulged in 4 A building a railroad to the mines a near there is in my opinion pop or feasible project for reaching these fields with a railroad the G salt halt lake and hot springs springe road company has a very port and comprehensive organization p W A li charter the extension of 1611 ite lines nes to WO the wyoming border on the eat east and the nevada state ite in the deep creek country on the west its to board bosyj of directors are amongst our most moat prominent and respected ci citizens it II has all the machinery mac hinry of organization complete including a 8 company and a competent engineering department it has baa about twelve miles of road completed complete dj doing a ou suburban qurban passenger business busi nees with some freight traffic such as brick coal etc its balance sheet shows a profit over and above the operating expenses of this short hort line during the past year they lave steel rails and ana ties on hand band suf out to carry the road to farmington their line passes panes tb through rough the heart of all the settlements in the tha valley after leaving Kay eville the line bears 10 the east around the point of the Wima tob striking the weber river at Do gate the distance ville is sixty two miles and the profile of the line shows m it almost uniform down grade bow Co coalville alville to this city there beilis only two slight alight breaks in the grade at A which joint the maximum grade is only forty three set reel to the mile going atthe emythe maximum grade Is seventy owe ohie feet trona from where the road strikes the weber A branch of about twelve ales to the northwest would connect the road with the central pacific system this company realizing that there to is no fuel west cesi of this city have wisely concluded to first build to the atal 01 ol before striking out for the we wesl they are now negotiating for the sale of their bonds in the east and in eu few and with proper support and en from our citi ol zeng will doubtless succeed the salt lakee lake los angeles railroad has about fifteen miles of road completed to abe be westward terminating lor jor the present at saltair beach the pi proposed ed dd deep mp creek frail railroad road which has bits been no BO long agitated by colonti T P murray seems to io have taken new lif life ea and it appears to m me e chat if all of these companies would unite quite their efforts upon one plan of tion to the west and seek such focal aid as could doubtless be obtained io in money subscriptions donations of land iron irom real estate owners and from the city ud ad liberal franchises and right of way through the city with such backing and support at home it would be pos possible |
