Show DISCOURSE DELIVERED BY BT ELDER FRO ag the ghe yaM aole salt lake my GUM utah sunday REpORT EI BY BT ARTHUR WINTER I 1 desire the assistance aiDee of the holy faith and prayers in spirit and your gy behalf tor for it to Is not possible for me or to speak to to edify the people my satisfaction unless the lord assets own iown we and I 1 biall be pleased to say what I 1 abt ought to say BY as 98 the lord will give me utterance I 1 appreciate the fellowship of the utter latter day saints and the privilege of meeting with the people on the sabbath dy day V to worship the lord to the sacraments sacrament and to have strength re renewed as an I 1 feel that I 1 nay my week to week I 1 wonder need it from sometimes why such a percentage of saints can feel contented the latter day U upon poll the sabbath day to 10 absent themselves from the house of worships worship because the lord requires require us to keep the sabbath day holy to refrain from labor from pleasure seeking from transactions and from secular business pursuits and to meet together to him to offer up our prayers worship of grap tude to speak of his goodness and will made H his III word MW gw bear knori sown to us 1 I understand that these requirements readi cremento ire mento are just as necessary to maintain A healthy condition in the Is for us to partake of food spirit Dl ritas AS it to maintain main maintain tsin the health of the body and an I 1 believe that all latter la tt erday day saints sainte must feel IL a measure of condemnation they neglect these re when quire ments I 1 do not believe that it is the lord and to please possible for us neglect any of our duties there is no of pleasure is amount doubt that an enjoyed by theford the lord when he the obedience of his children in some things but his plea u re can hardly be complete unless his children are obedient in all things the sabbath day has been provided for man as ali a day of rest and of worship and the latter day saints of all people pl acquainted as they are with the principles of the gospel and measure ably appreciating them should keep holy the sabbath day we have the plan 1 of I salvation complete and perfect to introduced by the father and as revealed and made known in detail by his son jesus christ we not dot only advocate these doctrines to the world as correct but every latter day sal saint ut that has done the will of the lord knows that these doctrines are true therefore I 1 say BAY that the latter day saints should be more careful and circumspect in regard to these things than any other people our places of worship should be con soldered sacred and holy for they are invariably dedicated to the lord and the movements of the latter day saints in them should be pleasing pleader to the lord we should enter theme them remain in them and depart from them with circumspection pealon and decorum there ought to be a spirit of reverence for our houses of worship that is not always manifested by the latter day saints we have come from the world the latter day saints that have been converted and gathered together were formerly Gentile sas we consider them and the example of the world from which we lave have come la Is so BO far as aa places of worship and a proper appearance in them are concerned worthy of the emulation of the latter day saints this houses house perhaps the tabernacle more than any other house of worship in zion is 18 considered a sacred house but ordinarily in our meeting houses bouses there Is a degree of liberty and freedom aou and a free and easy feeling indulged in by latter day saints sainte that is sometimes offensive to the spirit of the lord especially to is this the case among the young chave I 1 have thought that this has come among the latter day saints because of our frontier experiences our meeting houses in the beginning and up to the present in some parts parti of zion were used for a I 1 purposes for schools for gatherings of a political character for business purposes for concerts for theaters and the like and it has seemed to me that the people of the world who come in among us must feel offended at the want of respect that the latter day saints have for their places of worship hiD it is not desirable that latter day saints should put on solemn countenances that they should appear sad bad and sorrowful put on hypocritical long faces and pretend to be very religious and ana very sanctimonious the gospel of jesua christ does not require us to look mads sad or to feel sad or to make ourselves appear buncom fordable for table but rather that we should have joyous countenances light hearts and smiling faces but I 1 have some times felt that yo ve have given ourselves too much to light bave been too careless in regard to our manners it is very desirable that we should not give unnecessary offense to the world because we are preachers of righteousness and are called upon to win souls to the truth therefore our ways ought to be winning not offensive not disagreeable not disgusting so that the world when they come among us may not be unnecessarily offended that they will observe us on the sabbath day on all occasions and discover in us the fruits and effects of the gospel discover refinement and moderation and a pre proper per appearance every man being indeed himself and not trying to make any very remarkable appearance only to be natural pleasant aud ud affable in fact letting the spirl spin t of the lord reign in every heart giving joy to every countenance and grace and correctness to every mv movement ement in life and restraining restrain ing saying or doing anything that is in wrong at this late date in our experience the spirit of the lord ought to have its perfect work in the latter day saints it ought to be so thoroughly developed and have become such a fountain of light and inspiration in us that it would restrain us from doing wrong and prompt us in doing everything that is right it should be such a power in every individual that none bone of us would neglect our duties it ought so to be with every ever father and mother every brother and sister it ought to be cultivated talked about considered sought after and lived for families ought to vie with each other in trying to obtain a greater supply of the spirit of the lord it should be so fully in the heart that men would know on all occasions what they should do and how they should do it know how they ought to per perform forna their labors at home as an well as abroad how they ought to appear when they ought to be seen been and when they ought not to be seen how men should treat their wives wives their husbands parents their child renand children their this church now to is over sixty years aldand we are measurably in a settled and fixed condition we Wee should hould be so thoroughly established in the I 1 ples pies of the gospel that the fact should actually be seen and known we should ho u id k know now it I 1 in n each other and v we e should follow each others good example where wo we have ft a brother or a neighbor that out strips us in his fidelity to the cause of god we should want to imitate him we should want a leaf from his book of of experience and we should want to profit by his good example there to is ft a large percentage of the Latt erday saints who have had sucha lengthy experience peri ence that it ought to tell in the community we may be acquainted with neighbors and friends that we have watched perhaps during a generation we have followed their lives and have noted their fidelity to the principle of the gospel their consistency and their regularity they can always be relied upon you will always find and them upon the right side of every matter that la in introduced always correct always moderate not boisterous not pushing themselves forward you do not see them possibly as quickly as an you see others but whenever you do discover them you always find them on the right track and in the straight and narrow path that leads to life such men are not easily disturbed new movements movement and operations that present themselves do not catch them easily they beem seem to have become so thoroughly imbued with the principles of the gospel of jesus christ that they are not easily deceived that is what ought to be with men man of experience in the church of christ the spirit of the lord in us ought to reign supreme and when anything new comes along if we cannot catch it at the first glimpse or mooting we had bad better wait a little aal watch until the spirit of the lord shall hall direct us for it is in ft a monitor in the hearts of the latter day saints to lead them into all truth and it ikover never leads in to falsehood when ever we go into falsehood it is because we follow some evil influence the spirit of the lord never leads to evil but it brings to our the truth it reveals rev ealis to us ua the truth of the present and it opens our minds sometimes to see some truths truth that are yet in the future but it never deceives and never leads men astray that Is not its office so that we need to give heed to that spirit listen to its voice all the time and become acquainted quain ted with it and its operations in order that we may not be deceived the reason that we are still li lible ble to make mistakes and to be deceived la is because we have not yet attained to that degree of intelligence and light that we may obtain and we have not obtained it for the reason that we have neglected our little duties we have been careless and not aarness aar earnest as nesi and as aa energetic in the performance of the duties that god requires of us as we w might have bedou for if the latter day salute had been as industrious and devoted as they could have been not one that has had twenty years of experience or even ten could be led astray today they would be so schooled by the inspiration of the almighty that they could not be deceived by the voice of a stranger for they would know the voice of the true shepherd and this ia i very desirable for in this is our and without it there to is no safety the fact of our having repented of our sloe sins and having been baptized and having received the holy ghost and having received a testimony that the gospel was true and having gathered together and received our blessings blessing in the temple of the lord is not noi sufficient to be absolutely sol safe it takes a constant labor faithfully alth fully exercising all our powers and privileges i i toe gospel position priesthood ana authority are not enough to secure the salvation or of a ru man a ll 11 it is just no as noces necea sary ary t that h t the man who is president of a stake or of a mission or who bears the apostleship shou d be diligent humble faithful meet olten often with the saints to partake of the sacrament and attend to his prayers faithfully faith tully as it is that the deacon or the member raould do these things A mans position Eion ability and or illation will not elcue him irom any little duty but I 1 say tant the man who has received the greatest responsibility and authority in the church of christ ought to be the most humble the most meek the most willing and the most obedient and t to bow the lowest if necessary in him should be seen the effects of the gospel of christ more plainly than in other men the greater responsibility there Is placed upun upon a mans shoulder I 1 say the greater obligation for him to do the will of god f od just as our father who is in heaven stands at the head and is greater than all his example Is in perfect and we can it t go beyond it and we are admonished by the savior of the world that we should be perfect as our heavenly father Is perfect and I 1 repeat that the more authority and more responsibility that are placed upon a mails shoulders the greater should be his hum humility fifty the more per feet should be his bia conduct towards his brother bruth tor tr the more gentle kind long suffering and patient should he be ati that he be may win HUU save the people and as am the men who stand at the heal of the church and bear the gre cretest test responsibility ought to be the most careful in regard to these thi ngip and set good examples before the people that the saints shall riot not be offended su so I 1 reason that the saints should set such examples in the earth that the world shall not be offended at them the sobriety of the latter day saints ought to teach a lesson lesion to the world their temperance their humility their prayerfulness the carefulness with which they observe the sabbath day and their obligations to the lord should be an example to the world and example is stronger than auy any doctrine that can be published or preached to the world what wonders it would tell it if we were latter day saints indeed that lot is if we did the will of the lord as we have covenanted to do and were not in any degree covenant breakers what a sermon it would preachy it t would be a standing sermon to the corll if vie we were tatter latter jay saints now as we a ought t be keeping the commandments mand ments of god not a man doing wrong not a man breaking the sub sab bath day not a team hitched up or anything done on the sabbath day nt absolutely necessary to be done the houses of god all crowded and every latter day saint partaking of the sacrament what a tot testimony this would be to the it would be more mere than all the elders are preaching today to lay in the world and we have hundreds of them in different parts of the earth I 1 say it zion could be seen in that condition it would speak louder than though we were all to go into the world to bear testimony to the truth let the fruit be seen for we judge and must always al way be Ju judged dired by the fruit we produce and by the works we accomplish let the restraining influence of the spirit and power of god that we have received be shown in every mans life lot let it be shown in every household to in every place of worship in every place of business or wherever an elder of israel Is and I 1 say any it will bear such a testimony to te the world that they will stand aghast before it but we are like the world and we are contaminated with them thein more or loss less we indulge in their frivolities in their nonsense and in their ways As they neglect prayers so do we As they neglect the house of worship on the sabbath day and the sacrament of the lords supper so do we As they neglect to repent of their r sin and make restitution so do we ani an i as they take pleasure and enjoy themselves anil and are thoughtless in regard to the he lord and his way so are we in a measure we are too creless careless too few of the latter day saints come together on the sabbath day to worship I 1 p the lord and they allow too smal excuses to keep them at home in this regard there ought to be something of a reformation so that wherever a lat ter day sint 8 tint is found the world woul 1 feel the very spirit of justice of morality of temperance and of righteousness ia him as be moved in their midst that it should have its influence over them an I 1 that when such a man the spirit of the lord would commend what he be says as aa honest anti and true toe record aej the credit of ane latter day saints ought to be above question que or above su picton it ought to be understood od that what the latter day saints profess they live up to that in their families in their business circle and wherever they alej are they honor the professions that they make therefore whatever reformation we need to make lot let us make it it if we would only do this my brethren aud acid sie tec Cp we would find that happiness peace und and fellowship would reign wore more abundantly among us than it does and we would live in each others hearts and confidence we would love one another we woul I 1 weis ble ad in a aa another we would pray dray for one another and we would not nat allow any difference of sentiment in regard to matters matter of |
