Show SUGAR FROM THE LORD LOA wayne co U T april 24 1893 while attending the dedication of the holy temple in salt lake city april my mind reflected on OB scenes scene of the forty years past as aa I 1 attended the services of laying the foundation stone atone april 6 1863 1858 1 I well remember some of the remarks made by president young at that time he said that the be heavenly boots boats were watching over us and that we were fulfilling anc ancient ilent prophecy I 1 remember the poverty and hardship that the saints pawed passed through in the fifties and how bow the lord blessed and sustained and caused the sweets of the elements to be given us in provo it will be remembered that at that time 1853 sugar was very scarce and had bad to be freighted freight ad by ox teams over one thousand miles in the summer of 1866 1855 on provo river there tell fell a heney dew very unlike anything that I 1 had overseen it fell on the cottonwood leaver a hard white while substance and very readily dissolved in water men women aud and children turned ont with tubs tube nd partly filled them with water then shook the white substance subs taLce into the tubs tube then boiled this sweet water in iron kettles and without any process it into sugar very much like our common brown sugar As I 1 was bishop ol of provo at that time being ordained by president young march 1861 1 I called on the saints to pay their tithing on the sugar that the lord had bad sent them and they very willingly paid tithing on that sugar and I 1 took to the general tithing office pounds ot of sugar thus showing that the had made over pounds of 0 sugar I 1 well remember what president young said aard when I 1 arrived at the office with the bugar he came around from his office and looked at the sugar and said it wan waa seat of the lord and instructed the clerks to deal it out in small mall parcels to the workmen on the be temple many other experiences of those early times I 1 might relate but this ibis will suffice elis ELIAS H BLACKBURN |
