| Show DOES THE STUDY OF SCIENCE LEAD TO infidelity the students Student ss society convened friday last laet instructor nelson presided and Ine instructor tractor philip S maycock delivered a lecture on the subject does doea the study of science lead to infidelity the speaker said the question ques was one of great importance especially to students whose duty it was to study science I 1 science is what is actually known whether in the material universe or at in the world of mind and must be k bowl edge that to is systematically arranged classified knowledge it la Is knowledge that la is true complete aud accurate and in such a form that it can CAB be readily employed for purposes of thought much that thac to is called science elice bears beare the stamp of spurious spuriousness ne pe con stating of little else than theories and hypothesis and although these may be of use to the in enabling him to search for truth otili they are too more science than the chisek with which the sculptor works is the magnificent ent statue which is brought forth from the marble it is this MISS false science that has been iti in a great degree the cause of dispute said to exist be tween science and faith infidelity means want of belief to one it means a diso disbelief elief in certain theocratic ideas of christianity to another the rejection of both christ and the bible and to a third it means tue denial vf of the existence pe pf af god this latter Js Is properly palled athe atheism JeW does dm science weaken out our faith in god his power lie promises or ata written word in other words does doea it lead to a renunciation of religion it the true and the false are presented to us we must accept the one and reject the other because they are in conflict conni ct but if two truths are presented we can aclei t both or reject both there can be no conflict between science and religion unless one is false and the other true gods truths must agree whether dit discovered covered by looking within upon the soul or without upon the world whether written by the finger of gud god upon the strata of earth in the long ago or impressed IM Dressed upon the human heart with its full play of emotions emot ious and pa eslon he is the author of both aau though at times they may wander apart in crooked paths still they must eventually come together for the goal each is aiming for is the same in religion we worship the creator in science we try to show our appreciation of him by studying what he has baa created therefore is it not proper to ask Is it possible po isible to study the handiwork of god nature without having our faith lu in him increased instead ot of weakened superficial study of science may weaken but thorough and deep study of science will strengthen our faith in goa there Is no conflict between real science and true religion true there has been a bitter and protracted warfare carried on between science and so called religion sometimes Bome times the conflict was occasioned by misunderstanding and if you want to see the white heat best of controversial passion observe controversialists versia lists who do not differ at all but who have adopted different words to express the same meaning bigoted men men covering themselves with the cloak of religion have committed errors and clinies cr iines inies the lecturer here enumerated some of the peculiar notions hold held by religionists during the middle ages and in later times the notion ot of the earth being a square plain at whose outer edges ruse rose mountain walls supporting the vault of heaven which was a crystal roof wherein the fixed stars were set met and over it and moon were we re drawn by the angels above this was the celestial cistern and still above the seven starred bea heaven v en in whose highest story dwelt jehovah who is so h b said they to believe the earth 0 to o be round if it is ia then there must be men on the other aide with their footsteps higher than their heads beads where trees grow downward and ald rain and snow fall upward the apostles were commanded to go into all the world and preach the gospel unto every creature they the y did not go to any martof part of the world as the antipodes therefore no antipodes exist these wern were some of the doctrines of the claunch and to oppose them was to be in danger of losing salvation and even life the misconceptions gal gai ed through the creeds and doctrines of the dominant ka 1 I 1 church or churches have been at eradicated by science aud the present grand conceptions of bodd works inculcated in their place and a u d the bible interpreted aright bears out this new order of things there should be no quelling of free investigation for searchers after truth whether in theology or nature although at times they may seem at variance it will finally be discovered that the objects of their search are side by side in the brotherhood of truth it is ie said that io in studying science revo revelation latios are made wat that cause us tu to doubt the word of god this is not a toe record of god in the rocks or revealed by the fossils is in ID loving harmony with the voice of revelation te which declares that in the beginning god created the heavens and the earth proud science discovered in the days of Tar tarries barricelli that the air had weight but perusing the bible we fino that thai ibre fact was known of cotoli alj job i proclaims ir thousands of years ago bu but t the world as in other things has been blind to the statement bod god mabeth the weight for the wind science after toil and research has succeeded in discovering the laws regulating what solomon solamon makes plain in a few single verses all the rivers run into the sea yet the sea is not full unto the alae from whence the rivers come wither they return again the author ot of the volume of revelation and the nature is the same and it is impossible for them to contradict when rightly understood if the two cannot be reconciled to lo us the fault is ours because of our weakness we are not able to interpret aright either one or the other or both the interpretations of men are not ours unless we understand them and make them our own frequently we take the word of others upon subjects and are led maray either through their or our own go to the fountain nature and drink the there the hallowed draughts of truth rather than imbibe from the impure vessels ot of prejudiced investigators we should judge of opinions by things rather than things by opinions to the true searchers after knowledge with this injunction before their eyes there are tongues in the trees of the forest books in the sparkling streams ot of the hillside hill lilli side and sermons in the rough dead stones ber be eath our feet with the growth of science grows the perception that the whole world around us and within us to is ruled by law all the operations of nature the grep greatest test and the smallest are performed by law not even a drop of water can be formed except by immutable laws jaws that determine its weight or volume the lecturer gave many other illustrations aud and explanations of f the wonders and beauties of nature and explained also many of the grounds and creaso a of unbelief in god or re nard mard lor religion these latter were shown to be futile and narrow aud and the result of prejudice and misapprehension 0 the overwhelming evitte aces that ex bat of the perfect harmony between true religion and real science at the close of the lecture miss isabel amney recited balleys Bil leys rae race e miss mies jennie smith read an instructive essay upon american literature A song was very beautifully rendered by misses sabel ball and phoebe irvlie mr heber iverson then indulged the audience with two weeks in it a nut snell shell 1 l this latter item of the program was a very amusing and witty presentation of topics of the times which were mainly local in their character all those who took tonk part in the rendering of the program were heartily applauded upon finishing their respective spec tive portions after the benedic be nedio tion the meeting adjourned for one week |
