Show PRESIDENT CANNONS BOND during the past two weeks there have been frequent allusions in special and private dispatches from the national capital to the effect that a bill had been introduced in congress or a clause inserted lit in one of the appropriation bills to refund to president george Q cannon the amount of his bis forfeited bond upon the indictment to which he subsequently plead guilty and for or which he served a term of imprison ment in the penitentiary and paid the fine imposed we are now informed that the bill passed during the closing hours of the late coutress Cou grees gress it will be remembered that president deLit cannon was wag held upon the one indictment and two additional warrants segregation being then the fashion and the total bonds imposed reached the enormous sum ot of the bond of on the be indictment ment referred to was waa forfeited and the sureties ron hon john sharp sud aud ron hon feramorz little promptly paid pahl it they in turn being paid by art ansi si lent cannon the other bonds of on each warrant were contested land and only recently was the matter compromised promie ed the suits dismissed and the bonds vacated the passage now by Cong congress reFis of the appropriation bill containing the clause fur for the refunding of the is but an act of justice which no fair minded person will antagonize lest it raould be conceived however that there is a great windfall in the recovery of this money a word of explanation should be offered the sum of is a large one and it would look too much like double punishment to be compelled to jose it in ad addition to enduring the penalty for the nee itself but it is seven years since this bond was paid anti and the money convy covered into the national treasury even at a moderate rate the interest that president cannon has paid on the original amount more than exceeds halt half the amount restored it will thus be seen that the recovery might have been more ample than it is without exceeding the bounds of fairness and legislative ge ero sity still the act itself will have a ten dency we believe to smooth away as so many other events during the past few years have done the acerbities acerbi ties and animosities of the past As an already stated the action of congress in this instance will meet with almost uni venal in every fair mind ed element of this community |
