read the following historical pape the history of st marks hospital la Is briefly told its origin dates back some ome twenty years after a dinner party rt y 9 given iven at the residence of bishop tuttle C tle tb the 0 importance and necessity of icban ah an institution was discussed by major E the rev bev K R M kirby and dr J F hamilton at that times time although an important industry silver mining was in its infancy I 1 I 1 in n this territory malor major wilkes was employing quite a large force oi of men howe however verj in the miller mine I 1 and the h emenau was a noted mine in the territory major wilkes had noticed the evil effects of lead upon men while engaged in the production of ot silver bullion and was anxious that some thing should be done for their relief accordingly it was resolved to make the beginning of a hospital A building was rented ori on fifth east near fourth south and one or two beds were provided and these were soon increased to twenty p among mong the early friends of the hospital besides those already mentioned was waa mr warren hussey who was always ready and willing to aid this or other deserving public enterprises with bis big means and counsel cou neel As AN all the gentlemen concerned in the inauguration of the enterprise were connected with st marks parish pariah the hospital boe pital naturally tools took the name of st mark the management of the institution was put in the hands of the rev B R M kirby and to his bis interest and effort a ver very y large share of the success of the enterprise must be attributed tri Cri buted the hospital parsed through many vicissitudes du during r ing the first seven years oi of its life it had bad a doubtful sort of hold upon life during these years as is IN usually the case with such enterprise but friends were determined that it should succeed and stood by it bravely in all its trials the rev ber mr prout and bis estimable wife came very early in its history to the internal management of its 1 and mrs prout remained in charge as matron matren until the summer of 1891 looking after the comfort of its inmates with a mothers le disinterested love lave in 1879 the time seemed favorable for the pu pure liue of a permanent perman out ot home and the prevent present location at the corner of fifth east and third south was secured through the generosity of friends and certain mining companies on june of this year an inc epora tion was effected the first stockholders stock holders and trustees true teea being B R M kirkby secretary and trev treasurer Aurer M E hoiden president D S tuttle B R C W G gallgher galigher george B R ayers and george a lowe of this number r B R C chambers and george A lowe have been trustees from the date of incorporation to the present moment u and are still deeply interested in all of its af fairn thus organized orga nixed the hospital began its work as an a corporation dr J P F hamilton from the time ot of the inception of the hospital to the day of his death was the medical director his interest in it was constant it seemed like a child to him and much of his bis time and thought were given to its care it was certainly right and proper that the trustees should resolve at a recent meeting to make the first general ward which shall be erected here a memorial to him and it is hoped that his many friends in this thin territory will be glad to show their appreciation of him by contributing generously to the erection of the proposed ward in all the years of the hospitals life the trustees have been very few in addition to the names of those already mentioned are found those of joab laurenco Law recco renco FW billings C M armstrong H 0 hill H C wallace B R H terhune abiel leonard N P putnam F W norris N orris and george M scott alter after mr kirbas kirbys resignation which WO was m deeply regretted by the entire board all of whom felt that he was a man to whom much was due on account of his bis exceeding wise management the rev ber C M armstrong was chosen as superintendent and treasurer mr armstrong continued in this position until 1889 when by reason of ill health he was compelled to remove from atom the territory at the annual meeting held june jun e 8 1889 the rev bev N F putnam w was chosen secretary and treasurer mr putnam threw his into the work of the very speedily brought it to the point of the greatest usefulness and success his administration of the affairs of the hospital cannot be too warmly commended at the annual meeting of the etick holders held in 1890 1690 a most moet excellent excelle ut financial showing was made to the great delight of the stockholders who alo at orce a resolution thanking mr putnam in the warmest way possible for his admirable management mr putnam died in 1891 in hla his death the hospital sustained a great loss lose he had bad not only given his time and atten alten tion to its affairs but had thought and planned got lanned for its enlargement and the fact that we are edgag d in the erection of this building to is due in large part to his foresight and excellent financial fl L ancial management he vaud bishop leonard arranged for the purchase of these theme lots iota in this splendid situ atlon in the summer of 1890 but it was not permitted him to see the realization of his bis desire in the erection of this building in tune 1891 the rev F enorris WN orris was elected secretary and treasurer his management also of the affairs of the hospital has been the most admirable to him the institution is indebted for continued good management in the early part of the present year the matter of the erection of a new building was discussed and plans were pr epard by despre thompson and and at a meet ing of the board held on june the bid of TK lloyd and burton gardner company for the erection of the building was accepted and work ordered to begin F H perking was chosen as superintendent of the work the hospital ho 1110 pital owes a great debt of gratitude to the mining companies of utah whose managers have always bet ben u staunch friends without their aid it would have been impossible to carry on the work in years to acme ct me the trustees hope to lie be in a position to care for the miners in their new dow build ing in a much more acceptable manner than has hitherto been possible this account of the origin and ress of the work in stmark le hospital brings us down to this moment where we are met under the protection of almighty god to lay the cornerstone corner stone of a building which we trust may be merely frie rely one of a group of buildings in which men mens mena a bodies may be oared cared for by competent medical skill and where blessing prayer El rayer shall ascend to god for his hie blessing essing upon the remedies employed we be seak for the institution the interest I 1 the sympathy and the aid of those shall see these walls rise As the years go on may the number of those who shall share in its blessings increase stud and may such excellent re suits in the medical treatment be secured and may there be emch a host of friends and such financial ald aid given that the benefits therein received may be accorded to all who need without money and without price B R H delivered an appropriate speech after which a paper from dr Stand arut was read rector
