| Show THE HOME RULE BILL THE home rule bill passed the house of representatives on friday evening by a vote of to 41 after much filibustering on the part of the republicans and considerable mis representation of ef its provisions and the purpose for which it etwas was framed whatever may he be urged against the bill and we have pointed out what appeared to be its defects the statements that it to is a mormon measure and that it was intended to throw the territory into the control of the amor mormon church are both untruthful u ul and absurd equally false is in the assert assertion lon that it takes away from the federal 1 authority power to punish of fences under the anti polygamy acts stud and to regulate legislation in the territory when men resort to such sensations as those it argues their cause and to is tantamount to a con bession that they have nothing very strong that is truthful to argue against that which they fight the mormons cormons Mor mons had nothing to do with the framin grof this bill nor alth its presentation to congress the dolor dele gate from utah introduced it in the houte when senator faulkner presented it in the senate but he did a democrat with a measure framed by his party and also because he believed it as good a measure as an could be obtained at pr present its projectors project ore were of the sar saim opinion they pro claim themselves ready to work for statehood complete as soon as there 10 i any prospect fos for its attainment they also so believe that the home rule bill it if a law would hasten instead of retard statehood there are others who do not think the measure beneficial for two reasons one is that it ia 15 1 5 neither liberty nor vassalage that it anomalous is hr that it Is only statehood with a string to it P the other is that it would hinder binder statehood and postpone that proper deliverance which may be obtained at once by diligent work we give the two sides side of it so far as they are taken by contending parties at home bome in congress it is evident that the gentlemen who have spoken in opposition to home rule are equally opposed to statehood at present and to any measure of relief for utah they use the old intolerant arguments and the old untruthful stories however they are in a hopeless minority in the house it is in not probable that the bill will succeed in tjoe senate we do not think it will come to a vote it will be referred to a committee and most likely stay there till the close of the session should the issue come we do not think it will find enough supporters to insure its passage and even it if it should pass the senate it Is improbable that it would receive the signature of the president |
