Show THE COUNCIL AND THE MAYOR TWO THIS continuous clash between the mayor and the city council becom is og log sot not only monotonous but disgrace 1411 1 we do not dot pretend to decide who to in to blame the indications however are that it is mutual the mayor takes ground independent of the council in things and that body imling feeling provoked retaliates and shows disposition to act independently of UW mayor it seems to us that this can be avoided if the ordinances are vague in elation colstion to the respective powers of the mayor and the city council they can won oon be adjusted to meet the difficulty md and meanwhile a proper disposition by both parties would avoid any such scandals landals as arise at nearly every meeting of tile the council when regular business is introduced the law of 1892 which makes the mayor an executive officer with veto power awer separate and apart from the council does not fully harmonize with some of the old provisions which contemplated the council as a body presided over by the mayor but there need not be any collision in consequence if each party has a desire to reader fender to the other all that is due and common courtesy requires this if nothing else if it is true that the mayor to ia technical or that he be assumes more author ity than belong to him or desires to snub the city council we do not think that would justify the council in taking a similar course in reference to the mayor that would be only retaliation which Is ie not right and is ia paltry and between the two opposing influences the welfare of the city to is imperilled Imperil led the mayor and council ought to drop all ill III feeling and boy boys lo play and come together literally and in ment equally desirous of supporting each other in all public measures and careful to concede to the other every right and power that have been authorized zed by charter or ordinance there should be no clash among the various departments of the city government ern ment Letu let us have shave harmo harmony |
