Show LATEST OUTBREAK IN TENNESSEE for FOB the the benefit of those who have not closely followed the particulars of the latest outbreak of miners in tonne see and causes connected therewith we here reproduce a dispatch to the louisville louis ville courier journal it con taine details that did not appear in the press telegrams published here NASHVILLE ton ten aug 18 special ecial once more Ten tennesse has riotous miners A prison stockade has hac been burned ai aud aid d again have the con vict inmates been temporarily driven from completion oom com petion with free labur the wane scene of the latest trouble is in at tracy city a point where trouble was wag least expected at 9 this thin morning the stockade was burned and the con evicts were placed on cars ready to be started for nashville at ai 5 this morning a committee of miners awoke E 0 superintendent of the mines for the tennessee coal iron and railroad company and asked him that the miners be allowed as many hours work in each week as the con evicts mr rel replied lied that he would submit the matter to the company and do what he could the committee then leti left and mr N knori knowing tig that a secret oath bound organization had been formed some weeks ago for purposes unknown at once began to suspect trouble he went to deputy warden burton BurtO Dand and together they began to circulate among the miners who were gathering in groups and try to influence them to keep quiet their efforts hereof no avail slowly the ominous air of suppressed sed excitement neoame tinged with threats and promises of destruction to the stockade or a battle at an organized body of men of them armed and fifty any apparently unarmed advanced gli on the stockade to capture it was the work of a minute without u undue t due contusion every piece of property belonging to the tennesse coal iron and railroad company was removed to a safe distance tance and the convicts who were in the stockade were led out under guard then the torch was waa applied and at 9 the buildings were a mass of names flames the miners at once proceeded to the mines minee took possession of the convicts marched them to the railroad station and loaded them in box oars cars next the telegraph wires were cut and a guard was placed over every engine in the yards to prevent carrying the news down the mountain later on conductor finch and en elneer bolten were ordered to leave immediately with the convicts being covered by guns they were obliged to obey the train arrived at the toot of the mountain at 1 pm captain burton with twenty five guards has the convicts in charge and dundei control between sewanee and monteagle the convicts cut the train in two anu ten or fifteen made a break for liberty several blots were fired matt wilson white was kil ailed ed and the jaw of john smith a memphis negro was shot off three others were wounded but they succeeded in sc aping as the guard could not leave the train last ladt summer when the convicts were released at coal creek oliver springs and Bri briceville ceville an unsuccessful attempt was made to have the tracy city miners take similar action but it failed for the reason that the tennessee col co iron and railroad compary company was wording its free miners on lull full time and they did nut not feel that they were injured by the convicts being in at work there recently however the company found it necessary nece inece seary to reduce the coal output and during july the output was only tons whereas a year ago the output was tons the loss lose all fell on the iree miners who were put on half time while the convicts worked full time this caused the organization of the band that today burned the stockades vice president baxter of the tennessee coal iron and railroad company wednesday informed governor Go verLor buchanan Buc banan that trouble was anticipated and superintendent of prisons wade on thursday made an investigation and reported all quiet he however e engaged deage d fifty new guards to reinforce the thi thirty ty already on hand it is quite a coincident that when governor buchanan Buo hanan received news of the trouble ibis hia morning he was in conference with a committe eLof miners from coal creek wh who 0 bad presented resolutions decenty adopted by the free miners asking the witha withdrawal ot of the state troops and pledging good behavior when they heard of the trouble they at once went home in order to prevent any trouble that might be caused there gov buchanan has officially received no information of the trouble except that the convicts were at cowan gen den norman ordered a special train to bring the convicts numbering to nashville the state board of prison inspectors lue will order the return of the convicts to tracy city as aa soon boon as the stockade kade is ie rebuilt and will furnish the guards guard necessary euary to protect them bov bu 1 Is powerless in the premises |
