Show IN LINCOLN COUNTY 14 NEVADA EVADA on saturday sturdily ity april 2nd and with young i franklin Vr anklin lerry ferry as guide I 1 traveled miles in a northerly direction over dver mountains and through dense f forests of cedar part of the way from clover valley to panacea where I 1 spent pent the following day sunday and preached three times panacea an I 1 nalan indian name for rich richer r much money is a floe fine little settlement situated on the east side of the meadow valley wash warb and is surrounded by a limited quantity of good farming land which together with the townsite is f irrigated from warm springs gushing I 1 out of the ground a short abort distance north orth of the settlement the peculiar feature of the surrounding country is a number of white clay hills and ridges which in some instances extend for miles in the sanse same dire tiou and in y jasny places assume the most moat peculiar and fantastic shapes grottos eaves caves crags etc are plentiful ticul while the harder formations stand fortuin fort tin dilno lofty abid ald nume numerous rou s other shapes some borne of the most moat interesting of these are met with on the road from panacea to eagle valley and a white clay hill with a flat top also towers up to the height of nearly seventy five feet in centre of the panacea settlement clement set this odd formation to is called court house hill by the citizens two other bills somewhat similar in shape rise to about the same elevation immediately north of the town and a temple shaped ditto standing out in bold beliel above the surrounding hills on the northwest put t one lu in mind of zu chimney rook bock in the platte river valley so well known to overland travelers years ago before the advent of the be railway panacea ward with a numerical strength of 42 families or souls soul presided over by bishop milton with george A wadsworth awadsworth and alfred L syphus as counselors embraces the town of panacea two families in eagle valley lying eighteen miles to the northeast and two families in spring valley five miles further up the stream meadow valley creek there is in fact a whole string of little valleys above panacea which aro are named in the order in which they are reached by the traveler as he be goes up the stream range as a follows round val val heyat present inhabited by a french iuan who has a dairy there 2 dry valley which once contained a little set clement of saints ind and afterwards a mining town clustered around a large tamp stamp mil 3 rose valley a beautiful fu I 1 little place once inhabited by about twenty families of our people and now DOW containing a sofi solitary tary ranch 4 eagle valley which is about ibre three emiles miles lono an average wid width of half a mil milty containing a village with eight families beautifully situated in the north end which once hati had a population of thirty families of saints or more with a complete ward pon lion ani an I 6 5 spring valley which is 18 reached by passing through a canyon four miles long extending up from eagle valley spring valley is in the finest of all the above named valleys although the highest and coldest but it contains some excellent farming farm ing hind and meadow land and by and well regulated distribution ot of the water for irti irrigation gation purposes osuld easily sustain a population ot of or thirty families as well as the eight families who now dwell within its borders here as well as in eagle valley valle y existed a flourishing branch of the church prior to the difficulties with the nevada officials ficiala of in 1871 when moat of our people moved away from here for the same causes causee thai mat led to the evacuation of the settlements on the muddy spring valley abounds in in beautiful mountain scenery perpendicular cliffs cliffa skirting both sides aides of the valley in many places the valley extends from southwest to northe northeast asit for a distance of about nine miles with forks reaching up several miles further toward the rim of the basin the average width of the main valley is a quarter of a mile my experience in visiting these valleys as well as the now much reduced mining camp of on the ath and ath anat was quite pleasant save for the capsizing of our vehicle juto a wash by which driver historian and a idy passenger were thrown into the brush in as rather unceremonious manner but a the horses behaved well and the driver stuck to the lines we all escaped with unbroken limbs and after righting J the buggy continued the journey as wiser people determined to drive more carefully in the future the close proximity of the mining camp of to panacea has had bad its ito effects upon the inhabitants of the isis ter place instead of our people wielding 0 an o influence for good morals and proper behavior upon the miners these seem to have been successful I 1 in D leading some of the saints into crooked paths and exercising an influence that has led into a state of carelessness and lethargy some of those whose knowledge of right and wrong and power to discern between goud good and evil ought to have been proof against the example of odthe the evil door doer but the history of the world for nearly six thousand years has proven that mankind generally to more inclined to take the downward course than that which leads upward and that men of darkness have so ao frequently overcome the people of light liet let us hope for better things in the future but Pau panacea acca ahas has some good people many of the saints sainta there have stood up manfully against the corrupting evils which have been courted by others and great credit is due to those woo who in the midst of the many trying circumstances which have surrounded the saints sainte in this locality during the last twenty two years have bave kept tho the faith and are still by a desire to serve the lord and keep his hie commandments mand ments mente there are good prospects ahead abbad at present that panacea will grow in population and aad prosperity as a number of citizens are engaged in constructing a reservoir immediately below the settlement tl by which about acres of additional farming land can be brought under cultivation the valley mea daw valley proper in which panacea is in situated is about ten miles mile L long and has an average width of nearly two miles the settlement to is 12 miles southeast of Plo clie 40 miles southwest of hebron 90 miles from st george and miles from milford Ml lford the nearest railway station IV ANDREW JENSON
