the presbyterian party now on their way to portland oregon were present COUNSELOR CHARLES W PENROSE delivered the following address 1 I have been requested to speak to the congregation this after afternoon nOOD and I 1 rise to do s so with pleasure and also with some timidity this is generally felt by our brethren when called upon to speak in this large meetinghouse meeting house from the fact that it is not our custom to prepare discourses for the occasion so like my brethren who are called upon from time to time to occupy this stand I 1 have to rely upon the faith and sympathy of this congregation and upon the holy spirit which I 1 pray and desire may rest down upon me and dpn api n all who are present that our minds may be mutually enlightened that we may be able to understand that which to is brought before ow our atten thor we have met this afternoon as aa is our custom on the loras day to partake of the holy sacrament to worship before the lord to sing his praises and to be instructed to have our minds drawn adawn away from the common things of life and directed towards the object of our salvation towards tolvar ds god and his S son n jesus christ and to those things W anich tich have been revealed to us for our edi edification fi catlon and obedience the latter day saints are a body of worshipers who believe in god they believe in the god of the bible they believe in jesus christs they believe that jesus jesua of nazareth was the son of god they also believe that all men and women who dwell on the earth are the sons and daughters of god but in a special sense they believe in jesus christ as the son of god his only begotten son accord lug to the flesh they believe also that by obedience to the commandments which god gives through jesus christ all maii mackidd kind may be saved and that without obedience to these things they canu cannot ot be saved and exalted in the presence of the father the latter day saints believe that in these days in the nineteenth century god ged has manifested himself again as he did in times of old that jesus christ who died on calvary has revealed himself and that he has reestablished his church in the same form and after the same pattern in which he established it when he d welt on the earth in the flesh they believe that there to is but one gospel of jesus christ one true religion and that it if peo people lo 10 desire to obtain the blessings of botin god in this life and to dwell in his presence to enjoy deploy the falness of wis his glory in the next life they must be obedient to that gospel at the same time they accord to all persons every where the right to worship god according to the dictates of their consciences to ti worship as seems right in their beyts to believe that which commends itself to their Judg judgment meni to form religious soe societies letie P to publish their opinions to preach what they think is right to build up their societies according to their best beet judgment for the good of mankind to be perfectly free so far as conscience is concerned and in the spreading forth of principles which they may believe to be right no matter how erroneous they may seem to us and to do all things that are deemed to lo be religious so long as they do not ge upon the rights of others I 1 have with nae me this afternoon a small card containing the articles of faith of the latter day sainty sainte which I 1 will read to the congregation as there may be many present who are not dot acquainted quainter quain ted with our doctrine no doubt all people have heard something about the latter laiter day sainte or mormon 0 as they are more cumm commonly only called they have heard no doubt a great many very flo foolish olish wings things about us a great many erroneous things because 1 I know that misrepresentations have been mode made concerning us UP our faith our designs our course of life and our objects in being her herein e in mountain valleys valley these misrepresentations have been scattered throughout the world falsen Fal seh od we are told will go a league before truth can get its boots on of and this has been the case very much in regard to tle the people called immorm 0 DF JP or latter day saints the term mormon is not the name WO we should be known wn by the disciples of jt ji sun outs christ the members of his church in early days so we read in the new rew testament were first called christians at antioch Antio cb I 1 do not know where the latter day saints were first called mormons cormons Mor mons P but this is the name by which they are generally known in the world because they believe in inthe the book of mormon it would be just about as reasonable to call us pauls paula ur or peters or jameses or johns john because we believe what paul wrote what james wrote what peter wrote and also what mormon wrote but our proper title to is the church of jet jeus 1 1 christ of latter day saints it is his H 1 F J church built up according to his directions and we are called latter day saints to distinguish us from the former day saints the proper name by which the i embers ot of christla church were known in th the olden eolden time if we may believe the bible both the old and new testament was saints throe these who believe in god and keep his commandments who live for him and for the truth are called saints and we are desirous of being sal saints naf of striving to be saints we do not pretend to be very much better than other people in the world but we are joined together to the church of jesus christ in order that we may become saints be prepared for the presence of goil god to en joy his hie society and the he society of ul hift son jesus christ and all the good th the noble and the best befit of the earth who will be saved in his glory so the proper name of this church is the church of jesus christ of latter batter d day sainte and these are the artic articles es ot of faith of that church as arranged by joseph smith ARTICLES OF FAITH of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints 1 we believe in god the eternal father and in his son jesus christ and in the holy ghost 2 we believe that men will be punished for their own sins and not for adams adam transgression 3 W we believe that through the atone ment of christ all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel 4 we believe that these ordin ordinances anew are First Faith in the lord jesus christ second repentance third baptism by immersion for the remission of sins ming fourth laying on of hauda for the gift of the holy ghost I 1 5 wo we believe that a man must be called of god by prophecy and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority to preach the gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof 6 we believe in the same organization that existed in the primitive church namely apostles prophets pastors teachers evangelists etc 7 we believe in the gift of tongues prophecy prophecy revelation visions healing of to tongues etc 8 we believe the bible to be the word of god as far as it is translated correct correctly lly we also believe the book of mormon to be the word of god 9 we believe all that god has revealed all that he does now reveal and we believe that he will yet reveal many gr great eat t and important things pertaining to the kingdom of god 10 we believe in the literal gather gathering ilIg of israel and in the restoration of the ton ten tribes that aion ion will be built upon this thi continent that christ will reign personally upon the earth and that the earth will be renewed and receive its para disi acal glory 11 we claim the privilege of worshiping almighty god according to the dictates of our conscience and allow all men the same privilege let them worship how where here w or what they may 12 we believe in b being I 1 subject abject to kings president rulers an and ma magistrates in obeying honor honoring and cutai sustaining ing the law 13 we believe in being honest true chase benevolent sinuous vir ous and in doin good to all men indeed we may say tha that we follow the admonition admonition of paul we believe all things we hope all thin things 11 we have endured many things and hope to be able toen to endure all things if there theroa is anything virtuous lovely or of f good report or praiseworthy 14 we seek after these things JOSEPH SMITH I 1 think if these articles of our faith were scattered a little more extensively throughout the world the erroneous ideas which a great many people may have entertained concerning us would be somewhat corrected As I 1 before stated we believe that there is but one true religion we believe that because there to is bu but t on one e god for the inhabitants of the earth to worship when they worship anything but that one true god they corn com mit mil idolatry we believe that this one true god has a religion which tie fie desires the inhabitants of the earth to follow which he revealed lh ita former or times for their guidance and which YA 1 ahe e has hag revealed anew in these latter 1 times god the infinite the eternal ia the all wise would not make a dozen gor am a hundred different religions to con janae ne and bewilder poor humanity where there can be but one true religion ligion because there is but one f arue frue gid to worship at the same ume all people on the ahe earth are at Il liberty berty to receive that religion or to reject it or if they so desire to make other religions but for this they will have chave to answer to him when every man is judged according to his works neither JS either can they receive those bles f slugs either in this world or the world I 1 to come that they would have received k had they obeyed the true gospel but I 1 we believe that there will willbe be a period in the history of all men and women when they will come to an under I 1 standing anding at of the true gospel either in C abis world ar r in the world to come por for we believe that man is immortal that the spirit of man wal endure when the body goes into the grave that the body will be raised again from the dead and that in the resurrected body each individual will k stand aland before god and give an ac bount for the deeds lone done in the body we do not believe that this mortal sphere in which we dwell is ail there is of life nor the only place re the mercy of bf god can reach uis his creatures we believe that the tender mercies of god are over all E we kis works work anat throughout all hla his universe his power reaches the light of his truth can penetrate and his salvation can be extended and that those who do not have the privilege of 1 I learning and understanding the one true way of nf life while they dwell in mortality will find the opportunity hereafter in the various mansions prepared for the children of of men when SK they depart hence we believe that all people will at some time hear the gospel the gospel r of jesus christ the true plan of salva uon we believe in a defined plan r of salvation salvat ioB that it was prepared by god that true religion originates with god that it comes downward tp to man and not from man upward to god though men may sees out many inventions and make many reli religions giong fret et the true religion of god must come arom gud the religion of jesus christ must come from jesus christ christ and the father are one i ot otone one in per an son but one in mind one in spirit I 1 one in doctrine one in principle one in all things in which two or more indi visuals i duale can be perfectly and entirely united when jesus was wa baptized in jordan Juc ming out water the father from heaven saying this is my beloved son in whom I 1 am well pleased f and the holy ghost defend ed upon him in the form or sign of tae dove this shows that they are separate and distinct as to personality to substance aad get oue one in essence ess euce in principle in faith in doctrine and in all things thIng sin in which different persons can be united well then the religion of god is the religion of jesus christ and the religion of jesus christ is the religion of the father cathor it is said he declared my gge doctrine trine is not mine but his that sent 4 me and it if any man ivan shall ob all do his will he shall know of the doctrine whether it be of god or whether I 1 speak of my self 2 true religion then comes farm god through jesus christ and all mankind may be saved by obeying its principles all mankind except those who are tiu savable will at sometime some time be saved by the one gospel As christ preached it to men in the flesh when he dwelt dwelton on the earth before his cruel filion so after he was slain anti and his body lay in the tomb he went as peter says and preached to the spirits in prison who were di s ok bedient in the days of noah noab while the ark was preparing he went and preached to them the sanae gospel which he preached to men in the flesh as we are told by the same apostle what 1 have just quoted you will flud in the ard 3rd chapter of the first epistle of peter and verses in the next chal chapter ter anc the ath verse we are told 41 For for this cause was waa the gospel preached also to them that are dead that they might be judged according to men in the flesh but live jive according to god in the spirit they were not men in the flesh they were men in the spirit christ went and preached to them while his body lay in the tomb being put to death in the flesh but quickened by the spirit he went anti and preached unto the spirits in prison he descended into hades he paid to them in darkness show yourselves he led captivity cap ave 23 this is one of the ph s of our faith and we expect that the time will come when the heathen nations that have not heard of beus esus christ will have the gospel preached to them in the spirit as aa those people did who dwelt on the earth before the days of at jesus there are the wil millions lions of jews who have departed from this life in unbelief very much through no fault of their own but through the errors of their ancestors every soul of them according to our faith will hear the gospel alt all modin order to be judged by it must hear bear it but how chow can they hear abar without a preacher and how can he preach except he be sent he must be sent of god not dt of man men have a right to preach they have a right to lecture to pub publish tish to spread abroad their opinions aud views but to preach the th gospel and administer in id the ordinances din ances of it with authority as the lord has appointed man has to be called of god to be appointed to be ordained to receive authority or bis ministrations will not be effectual and the time will come when as j jesus esus preached to the spirits in prison so 80 his servants called ordained and appointed of him will go to the thou thousands a and a and millions of those who are dead and publish the gospel of peace and it shall come to pass as isaiah said that god shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high and the kings king of the earth upon the earth and they shall be gathered together as prisoners are gathered in the pit and shall be shut up in the prison and after many days they shall be visited isaiah 21 22 they also will hear the word of the lord aasc As christ went to preach deliverance to the captives the opening of the prison to them that were bound to declare the acceptable year of the lord |
