received revived certificates authorizing their ordination to tife office mee of fider eider on promising before the conference to honor said office and calling if ordained COUNSELOR COUnS BLOB CHAS W PENROSE gave some instructions regarding the ordination of young men to the office of elder just before death he gave his bis opinion that the ordination of such persons would be perfectly permissible if they were qualified to receive that priesthood but he be did not think little boys should be so ordained just because they were going to die nor should anyone be ordained an elder who would not if in good health be called to receive ceide that office in the priesthood no mans hould bould be ordained an elder simply to enable him to go to the house of the lord to got get married the priesthood to is conferred on those who are worthy and are called of god and is for active service in the ministry many who receive the office of an elder and make mace covenants to magnify it break their solemn promises by neglecting their quorum meetings m ep U and other duties presidents of elders quorums should see to this matter and the bishops ought to send teachers to labor with men who are thus neglectful this is isae a erious wrong and the lord could not be pleased with men who will break their covenants PRES ANGUS M CANNON endorsed the remarks af f elder penrose with reference to the ordination of boys or worthy men because of approaching pro aching death this principle should not be carried to extremes for we are likely to place responsibilities upon persons too young to bear them it is only a short step from this custom to that of infant baptism which to is contrary to the commands of god he regretted to see the absence of so many of the ward bishops and their counselors for such are called as shepherds of the people and aad if they are absent from their post poet of duty it will not be surprising if the people are delinquent statistics from all the wards of the were read by president cannon showing the fast offerings of the people and the necessity which has existed of drawing very largely from the general store house of the church for the support of the poor he stated that this to is not pleasing pleas ag to god who desires that these offerings may be given by the people thus conferring blessings upon those who give and those who receive and preventing the impoverishment of the people at large the statistics were accepted by unanimous vote of the conference and ordered to be placed on file president cannon in terms of commendation concerning the work of the belief societies and admonished all to a renewal of their efforts in these and all other worthy directions the choir sang the anthen anthem let god arise and let his hii enemies be scattered ed by summary to the con ference arence er ence and by unanimous vote received and ordered filed the statistical reports of the be belief societies young kens areas mutual improvement pro associations young led lad ies mutual improvement association high priests quorum primary associations and religion blasee of the salt lake stake for the six months month ending feb 29 1892 were read received and ordered filed the statistical report of the sunday schools of the stake for the year end ing dec 81 1891 was read and the same action taken on motion of counselor C W pw rose J ET almage the stake superintendent of religion cl classes assep and hs hg assistants were released in accordance with recommendations contained in the report of that organization the reason assigned being the fact that pr practically optically oti cally nothing had been done b by th the bishops in the he way of organizing such classes APOSTLE JOHN W TAYLOR was was called upon to speak he gave it as his bis opinion that statistical reports were for the benefit of the presiding officers of the church and the stake and not of special interest to the people except for the purpose of giving them information regarding their condition he referred to the many duties devolving on members of the church to be performed on the sab bath and the various helps and organizations tend in their sustenance anoe to increase this work and to co multiply burdens on the heads beada of the saints the ex reading of statistics not bot being of special interest to the people tends to distract their attention from the more important duties in their assemblies and while it would not be well to suspend this reading altogether it would be well to curtail it as much as an is consistent with a proper understanding of our condition the organizations now BOW in existence if kept up and properly operated will do all that is necessary for the ad advancement vanos of the people of god without the accumulation of too many religious duties on the heads beads of children the speaker referred to the work of the relief societies socie tiep and commended the accumulation of gral arand and the increase crease of funds for the hospital and other bottler charitable organizations he rejoiced that all the ne necessaries eso arles of life are provided for the people of go goa and that facilities are given for the education of our childr children jv it to is necessary that the maguy duties devolving upon those in authority should be performed and that this moy be doneit done it is dt desirable rable that the officers should be sustained by the people the advice of these men should be taken freely by those under their care most of the neglect of the duties of this church result rather from the carelessness les than from the unwilling unwillingness of the people and hence the necessity for i all these organizations that the saints may be admonished in their duties this people is rapidly growing and in some directions we are performing our duties well while in others we are neglecting them we are being divided on OB political lines now but contention among brethren should be avoided there to is a great ideal deal of mixing with the world on the part of the sainte and this does not alto r produce a good effect upon 16 young people who ho are thus led tor nu associations aad erven even to mitry marry breide e the the lord has alay look looked arpon such marriages with ivor or as aa tending to division conten and the rearing of children in elief cef tie e speaker referred with C emmen ton on to the jews who carry out their torn not to marry out of their hurch and thus preserve their in rity ty to theia falth faith we would do ill I 1 to follow more closely in their this respect teaching but ot t coercing our children in the way of raiding ol 01 ing promiscuous marriages marri agee this bitter r should be explained explain Od in na sd love to the children and if the vice of the parents is not taken they i have at least east done their duty paul my baye be yo ye not unequally yoked joked with unbelievers believers un n this to is good advice for the latter balter day saints sainte the many temptations for the young in ID this city were spoken of and the consequent necessity of advising the children to avoid them attention to these will increase the joy of parents in n their children because of the testimony tee y the latter will possess and the obedience they will show to god thus zion will increase as she has ju buthe the past if the children are trained la in the he proper way some of the latter day salute saints are becoming rich too fast and they do not remember the admonition seek ye first the kingdom of god and his righteousness and all things shall tie be added unto you which was given them by the elders 1 I 1 hey perhaps performed their duties well and thus means were accumulated and left to their children who found their responsibilities in business so BO great as to keep them from attending to their re lillous duties thus they would bradu idly fall V way away from the truth this tendency will increase unless this evil Is IB corrected by the dedication of at a portion of this superfluous i means to the use of the people of zion chero f there are many who are we wealthy while some others are constantly struggling for the necessaries of life this thia geould not be it the superfluous property of the people could be collected in ina general fund and used by the wiest among us it would relieve the home hom of this people from mortgages a assist the saints in looking after their own interests inte reato neglect of either benm or reli religion gLon will surely follow the brov crowding ding of too many financial duties upon members of the Chu church relf and both those these results must be avoided the bord will bring about his pur pomes in theae and other respects and IU people will do their he kill provide another to carry on the work he be has established The speaker cad his hie remarks with his hia testimony mony and an admonition to temperance and integrity the choir sang the anthem light stud and truth the world are waking conference adjourned to meet sunday at lo 10 a m in the tabernacle bernce Ta benediction by free john morgan 0 march eth the th conference convened at 10 alook singing by the choir is ift tits tee the congregation and his gratitude in seeing the interest manifested by the saints in the meetings of this conference he said it was not the purpose now to weary the salute with the reading of statistics but a few would bre be given speaking about the condition of the saints he said he be thought there was much interest ta terest manifested in the meetings ings as a general rule and those who came together realized the blessings promised by the lord if we will continue to do according to the commandments of god goa he wy ww continue to bless us today we are las as prosperous contented and happy as ever the lord has blessed the soil the water and the very air we breathe the duty of us all is to live near god and realize that we are his servants we must be circumspect in our works our conversation and thoughts as the holy spirit will nab dwell in unholy temples if we are not he will for sako us As president of the stake the speaker desired to live in all respects worthy of the con confidence of the people from fr cm the poorest toabe to the most moat opulent As AH fathers and mothers we should all be honest and faithful in all things in order to exercise the right kind of influence among our surroundings As we become wealthy we must continue to pay our ti things being more faithful as we receive increased blessings and respond to every call made upon us up in whatever capa capacity ciry we may be administering to the needs of the people REPORTS the report of the elders quorums of the stake was read accepted and ordered put on file for future reference report of the temple donations tor for the past five fi ve months accepted and ordered fil filed edby by unanimous vote APOSTLE ABBA fiAM H CANNON wab then called to address the conference he had been much interested in the exercises of yesterday and this morning the statistical reports read before us speak volumes about the conditions of the saints in some instances they show that we do not live up to our profession evidence of indifference has been presented to us and none more striking perhaps than the small attendance at the opening meeting yesterday seeing that the there re is indifference arnon among the he people gener ally it is in no wonder wonder that the same game to Is apparent among some pome of the quorums of the priesthood it would be well if all who accept a calling would magnify f y it for in accepting it and not doing what is required of OUT our hands we place ourselves in a condi tion to receive the greater condemnation speaking of the duties of the priesthood the speaker said ald the apostles should always be in a condition to leave everything and go and preach the the elders the priests and the deacons wll all know their duties and perform them diligently that the blood of this generation may upon them would everyone do dd ble duty we re should have better n financial reports and a bettex better condition generally the speaker raked asked why tt it was tha that the general ie oeral storehouse had io 0 o Isu supply poly food and clothing to the needy the cause was that the people did not at tend to their fast day duties if the people would donate only fifteen cents per each individual there would be ample to supply all the poor and the general funds could be applied to other needful purposes the people seem to be so anxious about the things thing of the world that they have hardly time even to pray except in special cases of difficulties the bishops should see that the teachers perform their duties and labor with the people to rive give donations dould luns for the poor the speaker continued to reason a against ainest mistaken charity idlers should not be allowed to take the food intended for widows and orphans it is true that it is hard to find labor in many instances but those who are willing to work should be given opportunity port unity to do so no temporal unity among the people is in to be looked for before the people become faithful in all such matters concerning tithing 0 the speaker remarked that it was not something left to our discretion but a request made upon us from god for our own benefit and unless we observe it faithfully zion can never be re deemed Aman A man inthis in this church who professes to believe in the gospel is dishonest if he does not contribute part of that which god gives him to the lord the speaker referred to the condition of the world where capital is being centralized in the hands of a few and the |
