Show A FANATICAL AND FALSE ADDRESS WE give place today to a full report of an address delivered by judge 10 C goodwin before the P 0 8 of A on friday october 16 we do this not dot because it contains anything new but because we desire to enter a denial of the statements which form the foundation of his argument and without which it is nothing and we do not wish to misquote his bis language or weaken its purport if there see are no other dangers of statehood for utah than those held up by the lecturer to terrify the country there need be no alarm for they are 81 imply bugaboos buga boos that only require a little scrutiny to disclose the fraud that created them it is well known that the lecturer I 1 is a crank on the mormon question also that behind this crankiness is a malicious disposition to catch up any falsehood and pervert any fact it by doing so mormon beliefs intentions tent ions and doings can be placed in an evil light this has developed into a passion with him leading to 10 the opinion that he has becomes become a confirmed anti mormon monomaniac we have stated that his argument or conclusion which is in simply that utah ought not to be admitted into the union as a state in 14 founded on assertions that we wish to deny we will refer to somal some of them the first is that the people of I 1 utah or of the I mormon ch cal have been taught from their th air orahlea e 9 s that certain men have been selected to stand in bodle gopa place in the world and that they cannot make mistakes we can scarcely think that he be believed beli evea this because we have never formed toe the idea that he was an idiot but we will emphatically state that no such thing has beep JL taught to either young or old we 6 say furthermore that there is no one with whom we are acquainted that abat 4 4 entertains such ideas in regard to any living soul the cormons mormons Mor mons believe in the power of god to reveal himself and the privilege of man to receive his revelations just the same today as st at any former time that every person who seeks to him aright way may find bud him aad and learn of him that in his organized church one man at a time and he the earthly head of the church to is appointed to receive such revelations as god designs to make to his church as a body we believe that all men can and do make mistakes and further that no person is re quiren to surrender his individual judgment to any man any statement A in contradiction to this is utterly false and deceptive 0 the next of mr goodwins assertion that is that this people have been taught that all who do not accept the prophet and his teachings should be held as hea heathers heathens he theine 1 t is of a similar character it is totally untrue the same with the third namely name ya that no tea teachers except latter day saints sainte have been employed in the schools where the cormons mormons Mor mons were in full control and that pure and de voted women have been danou denounced need by the latter day priests from their altar the lecturer cares caree nothing for the well known fact that scores upon scores of non mormon teachers M ladies and gentlemen have been so BO employed that some of them afterwards became members of the church 1 while others never joined it either removing fr from om the territory or remaining until this gay day at their own option this is so BO patent to everybody that 11 his assertion amounts to nothing less than a wilful and deliberate false bond th the e 8 statement t ate ment about the denunciation nuncia tion of pure and devoted women is but a repetition of a newspaper calumny invented to prejudice eastern people he says may A year ago today there were no mormons cormons who could give any idea of the principles on which our government was founded PY he has baa the impudence to say this when for many years he has editorially discussed 1 those principles with mormons cormons Mor mons and when he knows that they were taught in the schoolroom from the pulpit on the platform in debating societies and through mormon papers published publia hed years before he came into the territory there is a better understanding of the fundamental principles of american republicanism among our plain country folks than to is usual in any agricultural community there may be some confusion of mind among some 01 of the people as to the superiority of one political party over another but there is none as to the principles of popular government ane rights of citizens and the use and misuse of official authority nor has the government of the united states been represented as the enemy of the mormon cormons Mor mons it has been proclaimed by the mormon leaders as the best beat government on earth founded by divine guidance under a divinely inspired constitution the statement of mr goodwin that during forty years not one single word of commendation or affection for the government of the united states can be found in all the speeches or writings of the public men of the mormon pirty party is in so shamelessly and rashly false that it is difficult to refrain from denouncing him in the only terms that would fitly describe his mendacity the Jour journals nala of discourses the columns of the dm ir NEWS tb the e pamphlets and magazines that have been published by the tens of thou thousand containing the most patriotic sentiments concerning the national government have all been printed in vain dorthis for this public defamer who in the midst of a people familiar with the burning words of their leading men in eulogy of the government and the constitution dares to utter such a libel and have it printed where its villainous falsity is so well known but this tirade by mr goodwin was written like the journalistic articles of which it to is merely a rehash entirely for foreign consumption it is to be tent ent to the east to do its vile work of deception and carry its poison of prejudice where the remedy of the truth will find difficulty of access on this foundation of falsehood the argument IJ is based which is designed to show that the people of utah are not fit for statehood there are admissions that some improvements have been made but they are in the nature of accusations benair concerning i ning the past of the same nature as those which we have noticed and the excuse for the whole address lies in the insinuation that athe the cormons mormons Mor mons have made overtures to certain democrats and republicans with a view to securing immediate statehood for this territory the gentleman na named medas as well as the mormon 1 1 people know how baseless this assertion Is but people abroad do not and it to is for their delusion that it has been made there to is no agitation at present among either cormons mormons Mor mons I or gentiles 19 1 9 democrats or republicans in reference to immediate statehood but the course taken by the mormon monji people has disarmed their consistent opponents and opened the way for that peace and union which must eventually result in political freedom for utah and such anti mormon 1 maniacs as C C goodwin are rushing frantically to the front to fight something that every well balanced mind ought to view with patriotic satisfaction tion all his predictions concerning a cM mormon ormon state and mormon official ms in a community so mixed as ours and so definitely divided on party lines are but of a disordered imagination induced by bad digestion and that monomania which now agitates mr goodwin in place of his former anti catholic fanaticism if there are any people who do not want any office ff who are coe seeking eking for no personal advantages who possess all the virtues and good intentions he df describes and who oppose statehood for utah out ot good feelings toward the mormons cormons Mor mons it is certain that he is not one of the number his efforts to gain an office by misrepresenting the appo opposing sing candidate and his bis chagrin over his signal failure are matters of common comment and his perpetual wants and endeavors to procure personal advantages are almost as widely known while his malice and men dacita in reference to the mormon people and their leaders who have never done him any harm are patent to all and only make the more conspicuous the hypocrisy revealed aled in his peroration the lecturer is either the most pro bund ly ignorant person as regards mormon affairs in utah or he has the most reckless dia disregard regard for truth and for the exposure of his amazing perversion perve reloa of the facts of utah history and the published creed of its people I 1 of any individual who ever made a public ad address drees the P 0 S of A have made a wretched beginning it is to be hoped that their further enter tain ments may be more worthy of the respect of the public |
