Show ON UTAH 0 et 3 the members fa have filed commission W the utah noble majority and with ath secretary reports of the proceedings of for the year ended the commission september Sp 0 1 1891 the majority re part signed by godfrey rob ertee ft oon sanders and williams says in the mormon church in toga regard to I 1 view of the fact that the mormon church has hag invariably in the past die dic yf buted the political movements of its ad berents berent fl and presented a united front dinst and every party which ranae e 13 in contact with it those who now fj A doubt its il ts sincerity may well be excused for doubting the church the ahe peopled people 9 party strenuously opposed ewery every effort made whether by the laws cot C ot of congress the action of the court sor yc of tl the utah commission to put down polygamy tt it has denounced the corn com tr mission minion through all the years that it has been administering the laws dif greeted against polygamy and kept a united force constantly standing imd and ready to oppose every effort to compel its submission to the laws of the land when disfranchisement stared the church in the face when the city and county of salt bait lake the city of ogden and county of weber and park city had been wrested from its control and other places were showing signs of becoming anti mot mor mon then and not till then did this change come the commission hopes that it is the beginning of a better era I 1 the commission is glad says the report to record the steps already taken on the road to a better civilize civi liza tion and will aid with all its power in forwarding the good work but cannot recommend the withdrawal at this time of any portion of the safeguards thrown around this people by the lawmaking power of the government and is most emphatic in expressing the opinion that it would not at this time be safe to to them the bili ties tiei and duty of the statehood they so BO much desire the minority report which is signed by john A mcclarnand ernand states that polygamous marriages in utah have decreased to the point of virtual cessation that it would not be just or politic to extend by law the range of existing civil disabilities indiscriminately to all mormons cormons Mor mons mcclarnand ernand recommends that the unreserved lands of the United states lying in the naturally arid states and territories riep should be ceded to them under proper stipulations |
