| Show OLD FOLKS PARTY the annual gathering of the old folks felks of american fork took place on wednesday january 1891 they were honored with the presence of bishop W B preston elders C R savage george goddard W C dunbar and N A empey of salt lake city the aged of american fork irrespective of creed or condition were invited and carriages ent sent r to bring them to the opera hall banners and mottoes were suspended over the auditorium such as welcome god bless the old folks honor old age in god we trust f at 12 in the company were called to order by brother thos barrett master of ceremonies and after being arranged in order were photographed by mr jonathan hunter of american fork after which the aged veterans and invited guests were seated at tables on the stage which were bounteously laden with all manner of eatables which pleased the eye gladdened the heart he hearland artand and comforted the inner man blessing was asked by bishop preston it was amusing ta t see with what alacrity the aged veterans used their knives and forks upon the chickens roast meats vegetables puddings pies and fancy cakes which vanished with astonishing rapidity after dinner the entertainments began by the american fork choir singing Ingan an anthem misi mis annie wild read an address written for the occasion by brother james crystal brother wm grant thou then sang let bygones be bygones bigoness Byg oness 11 recitation diamond wedding by miss emma elsinore john peters sang dont tie to a man you dont know A brier brief speech from brother george G deard followed then a song always hear both sides sister aister mary ann An evans and her cliss class of seventeen little girls aang sweetly the song entitled robin redbreast Rel re breast and jenny wren recitation by sister ada wotton dancing the highland fling by brother joseph crystal accompanied by music on the bagpipes by bv brother W C dunbar both of which were artistically ly executed singing by brother grants band of little boys do it with a will this called forth hearty applause from the entire assemblage brother grant then sang the song entitled old folks delight with accompaniment on the organ by sister bister evans rev wm webster of ef the presbyterian church then addressed the asse ably in an interesting and pointed manner which was well received brother W C dunbar sang the character song my dear daar old wife and I 1 YI in his usual happy manner bishop preston being called upon for a speech said 1 I see bee spread out on the walls to my right and let left t the flags of our common country it is your flag and also mine and under its broad tolls foils we seek protection tec tion I 1 arn ana pleased plea seii to see the young so kindly administering unto the aged ones this is as it should be and may you ever find it pleasurable to bless and comfort them I 1 say t all may amsy god bless you for such acts acta of kindness 12 the old folks were highly delighted by the singing of sister evans class Grand papa and 1 I 11 remarks were then made by the humorous C R savage whose cheerful presence and sayings always draw forth marked applause and much laughter brother J petero then sang the song castles in the air all present were startled at the sound of the bugle calling the boys to order behind thes the scenes ceries they quickly made their appearance dressed in uniform and marched in true military style to the centre of the hall ball and singing the song en titio I 1 mormon boys march song ed by brother william grant the little fellows did their part in true military style and received the hearty applause of all present A character recitation was then given by miss powell entitled the now new church organ in a very ex bishop halliday made a few appropriate remarks brother dunbar sang the rhe nervous family which received great applause orangey orange fruit and candies were then distributed to the old folks sisters robinson skerry wood head and kirkwood also brothers armstrong robinson spratley and rowley each received suitable presents sister featherstone artistically sang why do summer roses fade brother N grapey then addressed the assemblage while refreshments were being passed around brother rowley sang the song with organ ac love at home the entire company joining in the chorus benediction was pronounced by brother george goddard the old folks were then taken to their homes in carriages in the evening a ball was given those who had donated and interested themselves in making the old folks gathering an unqualified success too much praise cannot be given to the respective committees mit tees who responded to the call of the cha chair traian aau of the executive committee brother thomas barrett |
