| Show SUCCESS OF THE REFORM SCHOOL THE utah reform school is one of the territorial institutions of which the people may be proud it has received some of the worst coret specimens of juvenile depravity that have disgraced society and has brought them under discipline and a reformatory influence which hide bids fair to convert them into worthy members of the body politic there are others who have been sent to this institution who had not become so orl criminal minal as the class referred to but who were sufficiently ungovernable and prone to do wrong as to warrant their detention in a place other than a prison and yet liberty from them for a season we are pleased to learn that under the just and firm yet tem temperate and considerate policy pursued by man ager joseph barton excellent results have been obtained As evidence of this we cannot do better than to reproduce the following from the columns of the ogden Sl standard andarA with our congratulations to the superintendent in and the P public bublic on the success so far achieved four boys and two girls of the territorial rit orial reform school will spend pend christmas at home two of th the boys DOTS and one of the girls live in ogden the other three in salt lake they go out on parole until they shall become of age the rules of the institution permit the paroling of inmates who show by their conduct that they are worthy to be trusted the they remain under the custody of the school ool and are required only to report once in six mouths months to give superintendent barton and the board of trustees as assurances surano that they have kept their agre agreement emont in regard to their deportment A standard reporter called at the A school yesterday afternoon and was present in the boys school room when superintendent barton delivered the paroles to the boys they are bright ha happy y looking boys and listened with attention ibn to the remarks made by the superintendent as did the other boys who were present in his remarks which were brief the superintendent t urged the boys both i those who were going out and those who ho remain to be independent and y manly to so conduct themselves in ty the work and school life as aa to not per mit others to place them under obliga dons dona no boy he said could afford to let another buy boy do his work he could not afford to bo be in debt either in dollars or time the world owes owe a no boy a living who does not earn it it Is the duty of every boy to be inde pendent and tand respectable if he does that he will be honest and respected y after these remarks had been cons eluded the boys boyson on parole were per f f bitted to say good bye to their fellows and nd there was a hearty response b by alth the e you young g fellows who remained some m of oatlie tj ie smaller boys shed 1 fears at i the parting and they were nearly all affected to some extent they appeared to realize that these four boys and two girls who were released yes es berday af oon had earned their their liberty an at there is the same for all who will conduct themselves prop erly there is no doubt that the liberating of these six inmates will have a wholesome effect upon the rest as t they now see that good behavior I 1 is necessary to shortening their term in the school they signed the paroles and then they were ready to depart for their homes and only awaited the carriage it was a pleasant afternoon for them f and there is very little likelihood of 7 t their ever being compelled to return as inmates the reporter talked with them per while they awaited tile the start for home they were all neatly dressed and bore on their faces the evidences evidence of good treatment and each one declared that the time they had spent pent in the school had been both pleasant and profitable they were unanimous in their good words for superintendent barton who they said had been uniform in his bis kindness i to the school they asserted that the boys and girls who do not get along nicely are themselves to blame that every chance has been given them to become better and that for themselves S they had learned a lesson which they g 1 would endeavor to hood heed the rest of their lives superintendent rin barton was not present during daring this interview and they spoke what they felt without any urging people who may have no faith in the reformation of these young youna people who are am between the ages offous or four teen and seventeen would have changed their minds had they been present and watched them and heard them talk the selection of christman eve for giving them their liberty has light ened their hert hearts slid and they will spend a very merry christmas with their parents and friends |
