discussing the subject of the organization of a republican club with a view to a campaign on party lines at the next election the movement was a hasty one and not very distinctly defined but as a knowledge of it spread the number of gentlemen who determined to attend rapidly increased the meeting was hel held c in the mining exchange and was j called to order soon after 8 about fl fifty fly republicans being present among whom were W 8 mccornick judge barton fred simon E H parsons hoyt shearman tono W donnellan H 0 mcmillan N fohn M zane colonel arthur pratt J K gillespie arthur brown E B critchlow J C devine J M ricketts judae bennett R mackintosh C E stanton frank stephens W G galllgher galligher and jake greenwald mr mccornick McCorn iok was elected chairman after some discussion judge bennett was requested to draft a call for a general meeting A resolution was then presented by judge bennett declaring clarl ng it to be the sense of those present that the republican party ahou should id be organized on national party lines the resolution was placed before the meeting and discussion invited it was supported by judge bennett in a short speech in which he be declared his belief that the time for republican party organization had arrived lie he had long favored the idea and was convinced that the movement could no longer be delayed mr ricketts who to ia chairman of the liberal central committee opposed the proposition holding that the peopled people Is party should band judge bartch stated that he had given the matter the most serious thought and had bad arrived at the conclusion that the only course for the republicans public ans was to organize arthur brown upon being called for made a strong plea in favor of organization it could not be expected he said that the peoples party would disband as long as there was no place for it to go it was waiting to be swallowed epand the republican party should swallow its share of it this bad been repeatedly declared by its leaders and he believed that they spoke inwood in good faith john M zane responded to repeated calls and delivered a telling speech in favor of organization he declared that polygamy was the keystone that supported the arch upon which had rested the system which the th eLiberal party had contended against and the keystone having been removed the fabric no longer existed as an organization to be opposed politically the force of events which could not dot be staid compelled both the old parties to disband and the republicans must organize in order to receive their share of the members of the peoples peopled party N briefly expressed his approval of the proposition to organize and was followed by E B critchlow who clearly and correctly described the status of the liberal 1 party its ita members were not harmonious and there had long been among them a state of expectancy that sooner or later national party lines would be drawn consequently a democrat was reluctant re to lend support to a republican and vim vice versa for fear that advantage would be lost when the divi division hion came the party was so lukewarm luke warm that a few of its members had bad to bear campaign expenses and it was as a political organization a bastard that in the nature of things must perish soon W G gal eigher and jake greenwald were opposed to organization on national lines and when he be was reminded that the meeting was held for the benefit of gentlemen who took the opposite view and that his bis rights were those of courtesy only he talked about an attempt to enforce gag law and made threats of what would be done if the movement to organize on national lines pushed it was decided that a meeting as I 1 heretofore arranged should be held at the district court room this evening for the purpose of organizing a republican club chope who were present and favored the movement signed the call that had been read the committee of three agreed to meet at 11 today to decide upon the time for holding a general meeting at the salt lake theatre this committee was also to circulate the call and secure sa as many signatures as possible this closed the proceedings and the meeting broke up in a spirit of enthusiasm it being apparent that republican organization was inevitable mr stanton said it was danger ous ou to organize as he thought the chur church chI would play off one party against the ot other herand and control things itself finally a standing vote was taken on judge bennetts bennett Is resolution and it was wag adopted the result being 35 for and 10 against almost identically the same majority for division as the Demo democrats cratA obtained on the first vote the call for a meeting was then read with the date blank it was decided that the chair should appoint a committee of three to name the time and arrange for the meeting Zane and devine were named as this i ommittee this meeting informal as it was has added to the interest in political matters in this city which today borders on excitement this morning it was understood by the movers mover sin in favor of a republican organization that the clique who opposed them would endeavor to pack the meeting this evening and fiu frustrate strate the plan to organize and were in fact at work upon the streets to this end but a strong strongman man among the leaders of the movement looking to organization remarked that it was only necessary to have a chairman who would enforce parliamentary law and control the meeting in the interest of those who had called it notwithstanding the opposition of the clique i 1 to a republican worker states that a personal canvass among republicans in this city shows a majority of five to one in favor ol of organizing on national party lines |
