| Show priesthood MEETING the regular monthly meeting of the priesthood of the salt lake stake of zion convened in the assembly hall at 11 a m on saturday may 2nd and 1891 president angus M cannon presiding there were present on the stand of the presiding bishopric william B preston and john R winder the presidency of the stake and a number of other prominent brethren including high counselors the presiding authorities of the fifth thirteenth and fourteenth city wards and of sandy riverton and pleasant green tailed failed to respond to the roll call bishop john B R winder was the first speaker he urged a faithful observance of the fast day clay and providing for the poor and read a number of statistics showing fl failure allure to some extent in these particulars bishop william B preston dwelt with great force on the necessity of the brethren living exemplary lives and of living fully u up to the requirements of the gospel tie he admonished parents to train their children in the ways of the lord and thereby witness the promises made by the lord through one of the ancient prophets which were that they our offspring would not depart when they became old he reminded the bishops that if they had spirited priests and teachers there would not dot be much occasion to publicly call the attention of the lat lai ter day saints so often to their duties elder george goddard addressed the meeting for a short time on the import ance of impressing the rising generation regarding the fundamental lassof the chu church rab notably that of faith president joseph E taylor referred to the great faith exercised by the saints in the early days of the church and earnestly desired to see this gift revived and become stronger if possible than ever it was he quoted the divine injunction remember the sabbath day and keep it holy and asked the bishops bishop and all present to use whatever influence they possessed by a spirit of kindness and persuasion to stimulate the young and any others guilty of violating the sacred day to refrain from it and turn to the lord and live he spoke also in relation to the proper management of those recreations and amusements necessary for young people president deat charles W penrose quoted from several revelations on the question of tithes and offerings and remarked that as the laws of the lord were lived up to so would the promised blessings follow also urged promptness in those duties imposed upon visiting brethren and all citizens as members of the body politic elder william C dunbar asked the question if it would not dot be proper to hold bold fast meetings on the evening of the days appointed for this purpose durpos go 80 as to enable the brethren to attend when it was impossible on account of their employment to meet with the saints during the day time elder john T caine addressed the meeting on the importance of our duties to the government under which we live and the protection of which was wa extended to all law abiding citi citizens zeng god and our country cla claimed luied our full fan allegiance |
