| Show A ROLAND FOR AN OLIVER editor deseret newer another column of this paper contains an open letter from myself to the alleged and actual owners and editors of the salt lake tribune in answer to a scurrilous attack upon me by that paper friday february 13 the aforesaid tribune contained an editorial in refe reference ronce to my letter in the NEWS I 1 said that one of the men who had bad made a very vicious report of my lecture on 47 to 70 11 told me that he had to make his reports to suit his employers the tribune editorial of the is headed he lies that means me evidently for in the first sentence I 1 am referred to as the rotten hearted eills 21 the editor then proceeds to refer to my statement of its reporter to the effect that if he had reported my lecture as he be would have liked to do he be would have lost his position and says that much of it we brand as entirely false as an false as the heart of charles ellis is by nature and by education and shall hold bold to that thai belief until he tells me w who he the reporter was who made such a statement to him it does not amount to much forever for everyone who knows anything about the tribune aud how bow it has always been run knows that no reporter on this paper would be permitted to remain in the employ of the one minute if he ever gave a false report of anything that is rich As I 1 read that in the silence of fridays days lovely morning up ue on the north bench I 1 fancied 1 1 could hear the genii enil of the mountains roaring sitf with uncontrollable laughter the dear old granny does he not know that every man and woman in utah knows that if that state went rent were true if it were applied to his bis paper and its paid prevaricators one minute the tribune would not appear again until it bad found a new crew from devil down to ipanag managing editor and space writing hul lister in reference to the tribune editors challenge that I 1 give the name of the reporter alluded to I 1 wish to say that I 1 gave the name in my open letter and you out cut it out I 1 used the name again in a first draft of this cation and again the name was out cut out and you positively refused to publish the name on the ground that it would be an injury to a newspaper man that is the reason the name does not appear and I 1 put it down as a remarkable manifestation of mormon charity for you know very well how little claim that reporter has upon your forbearance that what I 1 gave as the language of that reporter is true the editor of the tribune knows as well as I 1 do because he knows without my naming him just who the man was and he keeps him because of li his is keown kaow n ability to misrepresent anything and everything that is mormon or just to the mormon people then the tribune editor proceeds to say the best possible caricature of charles ellis is to publish him as he be is for in his native state he is simply a moral and intellectual monstrosity how does the tribune editor arrive at his conclusions why does he not give some evidence who is his authority tho rity I 1 really enjoy the above cor rus rusca cation tiou of the opium the tribune it puts me into the list of many famous and worthy men the same hand that wrote the above wrote C J broadhead a ruffian and the offspring of banditt called him a brute and a blackguard 4 it wrote geo george e ticknor curtis down a liar and knave or a dri velling idiot a scoundrel by instinct ex senator mcdonald it called Is a male prostitute yan an old hired procurer y belva lockwood was waa written down by this same tribune editor I 1 a female monstrosity ly now he has written me a moral and intellectual monstrosity 12 I 1 jim am placed in such good company that I 1 cao can only rejoice that I 1 have at last struck the tribune pirate below the waterline water line the tribune proceeds he ellis came here with a tainted reputation he was picked up by some good men and clung to until they were convinced that his heart was as rotten as a rotten ma mackerel kerel chose good men must have been afflicted with moral catarrh to the extent of brain slough ing or they would have detected the rotten mackerel effluvium were they dogs that they wanted something ts to roll on who are those good men and how bow did they pick apy up ellis half a dozen atheists hired B F underwood to lecture in sult suit lake a month they asked him to recommend a man who might be induced to remain several months to lecture he recommended me having known me for over twenty years those atheists asked me to lecture and having heard me wanted more I 1 was not an atheist and was considered so far weak but otherwise I 1 was reported to be a gold mine I 1 was hired to lecture three months at a fixed remuneration I 1 was told that while they all hated the evangelical churches it would not do to pitch into them ly because everything not mormon is liberal but I 1 could become a power by giving the mormons cormons hell bell y my fourth lecture was on I 1 gave the mormons cormons credit where they deserved it anti and spoke of the utter impossibility of having anything truly liberal in such a curious conglomeration as utah liberalism 11 they called me a jack mormon they refused to pay me and yet owe me one of them took 20 from me to pay for the hall kept it six months and declared he had to pay for the hall himself I 1 11 t ther fore appears that belva and I 1 are monstrosities because we have never denounced the mormons cormons Mor mons the tribune knows of liberals who are as guilty as any mormon cocab in the pen if it is so pure in heart that it would not keep a lying reporter one minute why does it not have such men exposed and brought to justice the tribune goes on then he be ellis ellia went over to the saints and they are using him precisely as a drug store keeps or a german restaurant keeps limburger cheese J that is a little obscure hut but it if it is true I 1 suppose the saints are using me to I 1 stink butyl out the tribune well that would be so good a work for utah that I 1 am willing to be used in that way and judging from the excited condition of tile inhabitants of the tribune pole cats nest seem that thai am getting in my work in a very effective manner I 1 have many times challenged the tribune to produce its ito proofs of all the innuendoes it uses on my name and I 1 now make it a further proposition it shall tell all it knows of ofellie ellis and ellis shall tell all he knows of its editors managers owners and backers both sides to be published in the tribune for the benefit of the tribune readers the tribune being a lover of dirt here is an opportunity fur for it to revel in rotten mackerel assa uda and limburger cheese chees 11 to its hearts beards content will it accept the challenge it is said to be a fact that when the rattlesnake gets real mad and cannot strike its venom into anything else it will bite and poison itself I 1 have been tormenting the tribune rattlers until they have evidently taken to biting themselves with such effect as is seen in the editorial from which I 1 have quoted above that its editors have lost all sense of justice all regard for truth is seen in every line it publishes in reference to the mormon people or to any man or woman who tells the truth in regard to the situation in utah when the poor state of nevada bb became so sick in stomach with the rotten mackerel and li hm m burger cheese chees I 1 humanity that had been playing tapeworm tape worm in her intestines te stines for years and living like the parasite it that is nevada took an emetic and puked the worst of her burden into isalt lake where it immediately began to devour the mormon people it has succeeded in get ting from them a large part of their church ft property ro perty but is working for more it has striven for years to rob them of citizenship in the territory they took as a desert and made a garden and of citizenship in the nation dation wherein most of them were born the thing that is a doing this is the salt lake tribune D fane and the creatures that are doing it are the editors and owners of that paper I 1 make the statement without fear of contradiction that the history of the press cannot show so characterless and untruthful a sheet as has been this tribune from the time when its owners gave it to an ex rebel on condition that he should make it an anti mormon organ until now in matters pertaining to mormonism and the mormon people it is as cowardly as it is malicious and I 1 believe that I 1 cannot do a better work for our country and for humanity than to consider myself raised opyl up to play the rotten mackerel macker fl and I 1 ih lim in burger cheese act upon it until I 1 have driven it down to the father of lies if in the day of judgement jud gement its editors managers and owners should be delivered over to the of satan and old nick should condemn them bliem to stay in the basement until they had eaten the dirt they had written and published against the mormons cormons and their friends that would be a corker on them for at leaah a thousand years that too ja is what they will get then they will beg me to come down and give them 6 rotten frotten mackerel and limburger to take the taste out of their mouths between meals and I 1 suppose I 1 will be just fool enough to let them have name CHARLES I 1 ELLIS it is true that mr ellis named the reporter referred to in his letters but we struck the name out of the copy in both instances for the reason he has stated EDITOR D E N nj |
