this appointment to the social hall halh partly in consequence of this change dele delegate gatts s were late in arriving and it was about twenty minutes past two when the convention was called to order by hon HOD jolln john R winder chairman of the county central committee he stated that one of the duties of the convention would be the election of a county central committee he had been chairman of that committee for six sixteen teen years ever since its first organization in 1874 he expected that what he was about to do would be his last official act in that capacity he then named 8 A kenner as f temporary chairman that gentleman assumed the if chair amid applause briefly IT z thanked the convention and stated the work before it J D cummings was elected te tern mi horary dressed the convention on the duty f and responsibility resting upon the members member and the present political situation in the opinion of mr richards action rather than words was demanded by the exigencies of the hour A pause followed mr richards brief remarks when J a paul mo moved v ed for a speech from mr mev mckenzie who said he felt that the convention had bad met to work rather than talk we want to carry this election how can we do it we have it demonstrated that in a certain quarter it has been determined that the peoples peopled party should never win another election yet we ought to make every honorable effort to slaughter the enemy it we cant have a whole loaf let us have half of one can we hope to win by engaging in such a contest as the school election no we may go through the form of voting but it will be useless but if there is a way to aiu I 1 say let us adopt it J H paul responded to calls and addressed the convention saying in substance the formation of a ticket is a very important work I 1 have known instances in which I 1 did not like all the nominees ina in a ticket but in giving due weight to the binions Oin or inions ions of others I 1 have concluded what was done was for the best this convention ought to nominate men of whose election there Js is a probability it is our duty to name men who will draw the vote we are going in to win A call for a speech was responded to I 1 by y john N pike he was pleased to see a full attendance of delegates and believed that they would frame a ticket that would be triumphant the peopled people Is party have been in the habit of doing this until defeated by the wrongful tactics ot the opposition such as striking names from the registration lists ete etc politicians regard the peopled people Is party as an uncertain quantity they hold that it is uncertain where that party will be found doubtless there are many republicans and many democrats in that party but hitherto hil herto self preservation has compelled it to stand together the peoples peopled party stands upon principle and will always keep its pledges the labor convention july framed a ticket tup up on which they placed the names of men who are favorites with the peoples peopled party one of those men was on the municipal ticket of our party last february and ran ahead of it if the labor party had allowed us the first choice of our own material we might have placed that man on our ticket he is a good able and honest st man and for one ifould I 1 would like to see him elected W H stewart in responding to a call for a speech made some humorous remarks the chairman explained that the call for I 1 the he convention should have been read but a copy of it was not at hand it had however arrived and would be read the secretary read the call atter alter a wait the committee on credentials appeared and rendered i their report which after some dis cassion cus sion was received the roll was called there were
