Show IS MORMONISM DISLOYAL the accusation of disloyalty disloyally which is bow being so strenuously urged against the mormon people is a very serious one w alich 1 ich th threatens to I 1 involve hern hein I 1 in n much suffering it is the bame charge which was made against jesus and the early Christi christiana atis an and J which was made the pretext for most of the cruel per they suffered la Is this charge true I 1 deny it mier mer denial however by the whole people does not disprove it but if it can be shown that loyalty to the fundamental principles ot of our government is an integral part of wh what at the world terms mormonism then the jujube charge is disproved there may be disloyal mormons cormons Mor mons as there have been disloyal methodists episcopalians Episcopal ians or other sects lait hut I 1 hold that no true latter day sal saint tit oan can be disloyal to his cou country and faithful to his religion rhe fhe three essential features of our form of government are first a constitution ution designed for the protection of minori minorities majorities need no do protection second a legislative body elected by a majority of tile the people third a supreme court which shall be entirely independent and ought to be uon non which shall have the power to decide as to the constitutionality of auy any law enacted by ane legislative and exe autive tr anches of the government ernin ern ment vilt tile the decisions of this court though they may not always be right ri must of necessity be fl final nal they may not always be in harmony with the views of the majority of the people but the latter art are bound to submit otherwise there would be no safeguard or protection for minorities on oil the other hand while minorities cannot avoid submitting to its decisions they have tile the natural and legal right to protest against burh a as they deem to be u ujust an to point out if they can tile the fallacies that have led thereto more than nee has exlene ce proved the conclusions of the supreme ae court of the united states to be erroneous sometimes it has reversed its own decisions while it is extremely seldom that a unanimous inious decision is rendered thus proving that its own members do not regard 1 as infallible but there mastbe must be in all popular governments a final court of appeal to which all citizens must submit otherwise ve v e should drift ubirt into anarchy or despotism now the latter day saints believe that the constitution of the united states was framed and its govern goat rn ment established by men who were inspired by the almighty for that special purpose how then can they be loyal to god aej disloyal to the fundamental institutions of their country they believe and have taught for ON oer er fifty years that the time is comido when they and those who will rally round them will be the only ones loyal to the constitution and the principles upon which our government is based and that they will rally to its defense and sustain it against all its foes this may be egotistical but it is nt not disloyal the experience through which the latter day saints are passing is calculater to make them the staunchest staunches supporters and def defenders elers of civil and religious liberty the world has ever known such is their destiny lait civil aud religious liberty cannot exist without constitutional law and even if the latter day saints were today in the majority it would be as much their duy to submit to a derision of the supreme coutt u until I 1 they could get it reversed as it is now a necessity to do so either so or if conscience forbade obedience to any particular law the consequences as philosophically phi cally as possible but no matter how great the cost either to individuals divi duals or the community it is essential that the welfare liberty and progress s of tile the world that the basic principles of our government should be maintained I 1 speak as a firm believer in the principles of what is termed 1 mormonism 11 A nd no matter liow how many unwise things may have been said or dude done it in the past ast the religion of the lutler latter day faints saints requires them not only to be pure in heart and righteous in life but to lie loyal to the institutions of our country it is possible that the government may become so corrupted ani and changed as to bear no resemblance to that originally established toy by its ita inspired founders foun deis it may become an oppressive despotism instead of a government based upon the consent or the governed should this ever be the case should the country become come e the prey of an oligarchy or despotism attempt to supplant and overthrow the liberties of the people when there 19 a standard raised kv by got god hini himself self the standard of constitutional liberty which will claim the allegiance aleglan ee of every man be he mormon or methodist jew or gentile saint or sl sinner ainer arid and for the preservation of which loyalty to god anti and humanity will demand the most heroic sacrifices W H S |
