| Show THE CANADIAN COLONY THE NEWS has published several articles on the senseless resistance of some of the residents of macleod district of northwest territory canada to the granting or of an application of the colonists on lees creek for a charter to doa general business with a capital of the following from the regina begina leader which appears in that paper in the form of correspondence e dearly clearly and logically elucidates the situation in the macleod gazette of the dinst appeared a very weak and foolish petition addressed to the lieuten ant governor of these territories without 9 a single signature attached although the editor alleges it to have been signed by about persons begging of his honor to refuse the application of some individuals at cardston bardston Card ston and vicinity for the incorporation po ration of a company to promote agriculture ri stock raising milling etc at t that place and all for the following reasons which seen to have been both numerous and weighty ty in the estimation of the pe titio ners but which some daring genius boiled down in the seething caldronia cald roia of his imagination to two stupendous arguments and no more now any sensible man would naturally suppose that said ar arguments as appended to the numer numerals 1 and and 2 ought to be sufficient to convince his honor that those applicants for incorporation po ration should be refused you sir air no doubt remember those two arguments set forth in the macleod gazette and that they were in verbis W 1 I 1 that we believe and understand that the applicants applying for said charter are mormons cormons residing in the mormon settlement on lees creek in this district 3 2 that these app applicants applicant lican a have within a few years removed from the territory of utah to their present settlement now sir air these two are all the arguments set forth in this petition by one hundred petitioners petition ers why said application should be refused there is no no 3 or other number given to add additional addition al strength to their petition although chete is appended to 10 no 2 1 an epitomised epitomized history of the mormons cormons Mor mons 2 A dissertation on economy and 3 a pessimistic prophecy of the depredation liable to be committed by the latter day Sain tsi should a charter be allowed them to grow and handle grain and stock and to grind their thair own wheat in their own mm mill A f funcher reference is made to a great alleged additional danger which will be most hurtful to the people of this district and not only so but to the country at large what is the danger why sir air it is no less than this the incorporation of this little company a thing that is being done in other places in the territories would be followed by the acquiring of large bodies of land by purchase lease or voluntary olun tary conveyance digging irrigation v g a tion ditches etc but sir air it requires two to make a bargain they cannot make such purchases or get such lease holds without the consent of the government or of british subjects who hive bought from the government at first and as to irrigation ditches of which they are in such mortal terror it would be a godsend for some person even if a mormon to dig a few in the prairies of south alberta now mr editor if you look it at argument no 1 you will see that a charter must be ref refused used because these people believe iu in the whole bible and the teachings of the chief ex 1 of abair faith and are called 90 cormons mormons Mor mons all religious denominations even heathen idolaters idol idola aters tors have liberty under british rule to practice their worship so long as it does not contravene any of the laws of the land to refuse ref ae a e such a privilege us as that th would atwould be to rovert to the eions of A a nero or a of old or to the cruelties cruel ties of later times in europe the jews have been and now in a few countries are denied some of the privileges of native born subjects but that ancient spirit of persecution is fast dying out in our times such dis abilities aie ae fast disappearing in the more enlightened countries so that jews can enjoy all the privileges and immunities of na ural born subjects as lately grandly illustrated by the present lord mayor of london and the lute illustrious premier of ling england de israeli the jews reject christ and pour contempt on his followers not dot so with the mormons cormons who believe in th the savior like all other christians true polygamy was believed in by them from the examples of several old testament saints and practiced only by very few of them but sir in canada this form of marriage is not practiced by them and never will be I 1 have the assurance of their leading men this objection is the only one that conflicts with british laws that can be made against their belief one thing is certain there are no halfbreed half breed children in their colony nor in utah of mormon parentage nor is the society biety evil as it is politely called known kedwn amongst them thein their belief and practice arbid such crimes there are jews and idol immigrating into the territories lot let these petitioners petition ers give them some attention the former are noted for their success in accumulating wealth some of them can count their hundreds of millions yet we never hear of their revolutionizing or disorganize ing society by their wealth which they often use as did a Monte montefiore flore and the rothschild in sustaining the charities chan ties and the governments of countries when sir I 1 look al ai the swollen hands and the horny skin akin on the fingers of thea mormon sons of the toll toil I 1 think you will agree with the old roman emperor who inspecting the palms of some prisoners said to be of a lineage dan dangerous gerou to the empire exclaimed 1 I see no reason to fear the ambition of these humble peasants but I 1 must pass to argument no 2 that these people have come from utah and taken uplands on lees creek yes sir air horri bile dicku from utah why utah is ii a most delightful st ite u under ude r the U S government has a grand climate rich soil an exemplary population n no polygamy there now why not f from rom illiah utah as well as from ohio or oregon indiana or illinois what is the difference they are white people le many of them of british and eltern eastern states origin and sir air it seems seema very objectionable to those petitioners petition ers that these people have settled on lees creek butas buta 1 ng as mr lee or his legal represent natives do not object to it I 1 cannot see why strangers living half a hundred miles distant should interfere then it is the vicinity of lees creek is a pretty spot tile the creek is perennial perennial eren nial its crystal waters flow from from the everlasting springs of the and their glaciers its banks are fringed with the dark green of innumerable osiers and willows its ILs hills and dales have abundant bar vests or grow grov the richest and juniest bunch grasses itis it is a very paradise for horses and horned cattle but sir air these mormons cormons are white people industrious dust dast rious thrifty and honest so that if any class of settlers can make thesy these long neglected plains blossom like the rose they are the men lees creek is not the only spot of loveliness in this district there are hundreds of places along the st marys kell kelly v kootenay and uld old man rivers equally desirable with lees creek there is room in them for tom tens of thousands thousand i of good settlers the porcupine hills alone some thirty thirty by seventy miles in extent beamut beautifully fully variegated with woodland lana and open plain and traversed toy by countless living living springs are open for settlement ett lement an and easily acce accessible to market arket 2 why these people should be refused incorporation because they live on lees creek to me is inexplicable I 1 cannot see for the life of me what that creek has to do with 11 but sir is it clear that this company shall be controlled by the mor icons mons there are no doubt mormons cormons petitioning for incorporation but the probability rob ability is great gibat that others besides t hem them are and will be interested in it and have sooner or later a controlling power over it so that even if the mor mons were a dangerous class of people their power for evil would be very limited fimi limited ted his is honor the lieutenant governor can so grant the charter as to limit the business to be done or the investments to be made by this projected company so that there cannot possibly be ariy any harm done by the overgrowth of the wealth or orthe the mammoth proportions of the business which the petitioners petition ers pretend to fear it might be well for these petitioners petition ers if there really are any to try to live up to the motto live and let live or to the still higher morality of the golden rule |
