| Show THE STRIKE the motormen and conductors of the salt lake city railway company s system struck last midnight the following adopted tuesday sept at a meeting of the railroad employee emp loyes held in the rooms of the federated trades union gives the reasor for the movement SALT LAKE CITY sept 16 1890 at a meeting of both shifts of the street car mens union the following resolution was unanimously adopted and signed by members resolved that we the undersigner undersigned under signed members of the street car mens union withdraw from the employ of the salt lake street railway company until such time as the company see fit to recognize the union and grant our request WHEREAs the street car mens union of this city after negotiating for a week with the street railway company with a view to being relieved of the duty of ef cleaning their cars and machinery at the close of their days work which occurs at wi midnight dlight were refused recognition by t the e company which to notice either the union or the committee sent by the union and federated trades this paper was presented to superintendent in read and he declined to accede to the request of the men or to recognize the union hence the strike in consequence of the action of tb the e men the service of the co m p i ri Y h as been more inore or less cr crippled but not su suspended A limited number of cars have been running all day with a prospect of increasing as the company is obtaining new hands without much difficulty there was some excitement at the clock corners the junction of main and first south streets which is the center of the system A large number berof of earmen car men congregated at that point and a crowd of spectators also assembled in the vicinity As the cars were ready to start they were surrounded and uncomplimentary remarks were made to the men who were running them AS each car started on a trip during the forenoon the departure was greeted with a the bystanders in the crowd at the clock corner were several policemen who were on the ground presumably to preserve order they wandered around in a sort of aimless fashion that was not particularly awe inspiring it la to the credit of the strikers etri kera that although manifesting considerable feeling they made no attempt at violent interference with the running of cirs c irs or toward the men who were working them there were some isolated instances of threats but these should not be charged against the men as a body it was learned this afternoon after noen from the secretary of the company that fifteen cars were running and that one hundred applications for situations as motormen and conductors had been received 0 between six and seven clock sept the striking motormen and conductors paraded the business centre beaded by a baud and bearing a flag and ana a number of trans p i frencies ren cies the latter read as follows our cause is just we ask the public to bear patiently with us in the battle for our rights we did not make a demand we only made a request we caution the public against riding on the cars with incompetent men we organized for the protection of the company as well as ourselves we will not clean the cars we are ready to resume our duties when the COM company PaDy accede to our reasonable request there were sounds of cheers at intervals along the line of march but w with ith this exception excepts on all w was as qu quiet jet the greater portion of the spectators gave no sign as to whether they sympathized with the strikers or not during the atter afternoon noon and evening strikers would board cars and endeavor to prevail upon the nonunion conductors and motor men to quit in numerous instances they were successful but other nonunion men stood ready to take many of the places made vacant the carpenters union last evening adopted the following resolved that all members of carpen tors ten union refuse to patronise patronize patr onise the salt lake street car line till the company grant the demand of their men and that we will assist said men with our means that a copy of these resolutions be spread on our minutes a copy be sent to each shift of car men a cor cory copy y to superintendent Rea to the morning papers RICHARD ICHARD prest MON BUSH rec bee secy september the situation remained practically unchanged the company have 27 cars in I 1 n regular use and of these 14 ran on a twenty minute schedule all the forenoon with the exception of second south street the cars on which made half hour trips the conductors and motormen mot ormea continue firm in the position they assumed at the strike and so does the management of the company new men are being hired and taught and the company have several applications so they say for every vacancy the streets ft are all quiet and the strikers have almost entirely ceased to labor with the new men to persuade them to quit september 18 there was a procession of the labor organizations of the city which embraced about men who took this method of show I 1 in their sympathy with the striker at a meeting of the strikers held thursday september the following was adopted WHEREAS that in view of the current report that the street car employ es union expect and intend through their organization to take ad vantage of the street railway com and to control the affairs of the said company and WHEREAS it is stated by the representatives presenta tives of the said street car company that they do not object to the request of the employed emp loyes to be relieved of the cleaning of the cars as it was the intention of the company so to do had the employed emp loyes awaited the action of the company in that direction but by their premature request they have forced the issue whether the employed emp loyes organization tiou oi 01 the street railway corpany con pany shall control the affairs of the company that in order to retain matrol control of the affairs affair of said company the officers have peremptorily refused to meet a committee of the employed emp loyes who were sent to them by their organization aaion for the purpose of amicably adjusting the difference between employer and employed rather than by their minutest act ace to attempt to control its affairs and WHEREAS the company claim that they have been led to believe that the employed emp loyes organization only await the success of this unimportant movement to ask tor for an advance of wages which if not dot granted they will again order a strike WHEREAS we the employed emp loyes of the said company in the most etive and solemn manner disclaim any such intention and declare it to be in out opinion a su iter fuge under which a denial of a simple act of 4 justice ustice is made and an attempt to impress the public unfavorably with wilh us now therefore be it resolved Ke solved that the members of the street car employees union hereby appeal to the general public to inquire into the facts facto of the situation before deciding as to the merits of our efforts to secure simple justice resolved that in order to quiet any apprehension that the employees plo union through its organization does now or ever has designed to control the affairs of the street car company in relation to an advance of wages we the present employees of the salt lake city street car company are ready to sign a contract that we agree to work for our present wages for one year from this date or during the timo time we may elect to remain in the employment of said company resolved that we are now asking and always shall ask for what is simply just to ourselves as working men and we shall hold ourselves in readiness at all times to submit the justice of our claims to a discriminating public and we hereby guarantee to the company as well as to the public that we shall at all times be guided by the most macrel sacre I 1 consideration for the interest of the street railway company as well as for the safety comfort and convenience veni ence of the public resolved that a copy of this pre amble and resolution be presented th through rough its officers to the company aud and also that they be yesterday making eighteen in all the company have been running twenty syven seven cars hence there are only nine more to man the secretary of the company stated to a NEWS reporter shortly after noon today to day that the men were still firm and were being paid off in answer to questions he stated that strikers who would quit the union would undoubtedly k ke be e given work again he also stated that as soon as the new men became sufficiently acquainted with their work a double shift would be put on the impression was conveyed by what the gentleman said that the th e company expected to have enough new men qualified to run a double shift in a few days and that the matia management gement was indifferent as to whether ur or not the strikers broke away from the union and returned to work unless they do this it is understood none of them will be taken back september 20 all but five of the cars of the salt lake city railroad company were in operation and on faster schedules than yesterday fly by monday next it is expected that all the cars will be running applications for positions as motor men and conductors are still so numerous that it has been found necessary to keep the office door locked and a notice is affixed to it directing all such applicants to go to the powerhouse the management of the company expect to have all the cars running on a double shift within a few days at a meeting of the strikers held today it was resolved to continue firm and so far there has been no breaks from the union nor applications for the their irold old position from its members present indications indication Sare are that the strike is a couplets cou coa failure and will result in throwing all or nearly all of the strikers out of employment rho fhe management continue to express a determination nation not to take hack back any of the men rn n unless they withdraw from the union it is understood that the federated trades have given the strikers a guarantee that each of then them i will be paid the sum of 6 per week as long as the strike remains unsettled one firm of clothing dealers through whom a nu numb map r of the strikers purchased their uniforms has sent to the union a check for one firm of saloon keepers has done like likewise w ise the strikers claim that apless unless the management of the company ac cede to their demands the john Step stephenson benson company which manu the cars will furnish no more of them as the employed emp loyes of the stephenson company are union men and will stand in with the strikers all is now quiet on the streets |
