| Show compelling THE POOR TO SELL ONE of the most commendable features connected with the population of this city in the pas thas been the possession by the people of all classes of their own homes instead of being renters the working people have been holders and have lived under their own roofs they have also sat under shade of their own trees and vines no this ls delightful condition of ooin coin fort thrift and comparative freedora freedom from annoyance bids fair to fade away and become a mere memory of the past the present government is one we well calculated to obliterate it and make this what a rabid ellb liberal faction have threatened a rich mans city 21 2 1 the policy of the present municipal government to is calculated to produce that undesirable result it is a legitimate outgrowth of the intention of the party who were enabled Z 1 1 air to seize the reins of rule by the most disreputable methods known in the muddy pool of politics we doubt at if any such scenes have ever been witnessed in relation to the taxation of the people of any city in the world as those transacted before the council board of equalization during the last few days the protests that hive been uttered against the burdens that have been imposed on the people by the city government have poured in like a flood and have exhibited the most flagrant and unjust d discriminations mi nations in the assess ment of values besides those already heard a host of written objections are lu in and will have to be considered C some of the features of this popular d opposition to burdensome taxation are almost ludicrous when m the salt bait lake county board of equalization met to perform their important duty they were flooded 52 with protests against what were complained of as unreasonable and excessive assessments made by the county assessor and feeling against that official ran high now many of the sime complainants are in substantiating their grievances against the high estimates placed on values by the city assessor citing by way of comparison the lighter figures of the county officer who is now vi ewel because of late city tax developments as the acme of moderation and justice the residence property which is practically productive nonproductive non ed at figures that beggar comparison the working people who own nothing except their homos homes are the class who suffer and groan roan most under the burdens imposed it will be exceedingly difficult and in many cues cases impossible for them to meet the drain their humble resources without parting with a portion of their substance to produce this condition ja evidently the purpose of the excessive public financial obligations placed upon the people by those who should be their servants but who assume the role of taskmasters task masters heretofore light taxation which was hardly felt by the people and freedom from indebtedness have ruled 1 in n this municipality these features are being rudely wiped out and the cry of the poor and in many instances the wall wail of the wealthy who feel the pinch of tf oppression are ascending into the t ears of a city government that is be becoming coining odious beyond estimate unless the latter listen to the popular voice they will be execrated in almost every household without reference to class and denounced as the inaugurators inaugurato rs of an era of tyranny which should have no place within the borders of the united states |
