| Show r THROUGH SUMMIT COUNTY f while here waiting for the train I 1 employed the time in recording the following particulars of a flying trip through summit county which may interest some of your readers on arriving at this place about a week ago we at once noticed the line fine location of the city and the evidences of energy and enterprise on every has many fine substantial buildings buethe most prominent is the large and commodious stake tabernacle which travelers cannot fall fail to admire its architectural beauty is enhanced by the fact that it exhibits home talent A stake academy is now ably conducted in the building by principal J G nelson and a corps of assistants A three mile ride from Co alville brings us to hoytsville a flourishing settlement of about sixty families here we had the plea pleasure sure of visiting an excellent school conducted by miss chase the pupils rendered a pro gramme of songs went through drills etc for our satisfaction upon leaving we congratulated hoytsville upon its comfortable and well furnished schoolhouse the attendance of about seventy pupils proves that the people appreciate the services of the talented instructress wanship manship was next visited here many of the people are busy with railroad work etc and I 1 was informed anat the school is ably conducted by mr brown Rock rockfort rockport port is a small settlement ment about three miles further up the rivera at the time of our visit mr seamon the postmaster and storekeeper there was distressed by the sad suicide of his son at peoa geoa already referred to in your columns school was temporarily discontinued in consequence of this calamity as the teacher is a sister of the deceased cease dj peoa geoa is a good sized settlement ment a few miles beyond and about seventy families are located there the people are congratulate ing themselves upon having secured an excellent school teacher in M H pack who is assisted by his wife chamas kamas is a stirring settlement though we noticed some few loafers around the store St sickness ekness and other causes disappointed the trustees as to securing a school teacher and unfortunately n no district school is run running ding at present for the want of a teacher how farto far to woodland was asked of bishop aiwood all the way from two to ten miles milea was the characteristic reply bese descending ending from the bench we at last arrived at woodland a settlement scattered for miles along a low narrow valley through which the provo river biver flows here a good mercantile business to is conducted by A E keeler who also employs a large number of men in cutting and hauling railroad ties passing through the canyon along the side of the river we enter wasatch county and the valley where heber city Is ie luca located ted surrounded by smaller settlements the wasatch stake academy with wilh brother jorgensen as principal deserves commendation commencing with seventeen pupils this institution ution has progressed splendidly and has now over students enrolled also a good reputation established PHENIX summit co feb 3 1890 |
