nominees because every one them is worthy of all this enthusiasm if he stood here alone the subject of this ratification aaion do our opponents present such a ticket who ever hears anything of their men except the head of the ticket and the registrars who are receiving the reward of their party fidelity I 1 want to tell this audience that a good mayor alone cannot make a good administration the men on their ticket whom the liberals scarcely deign to mention in their speeches the men on our ticket whom we name with confidence and pride I fr mean the councilmen council meo are the ones upon whom will rest a large share of the responsibility for this cites welfare during the next two years it to is an aphorism of mechanics that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link tested by that be devoid of all the purer sentiments of manhood if my heart did not nob swell with pride while standing before a gathering like this tonight to receive at your hands bands such a manifestation of endorsement dor and support I 1 hold in common with all men the right to act and think as my conscience shall dictate and I 1 especially hold sacred the right to sustain the principles of correct government which are harmonious with the glorious principles of truth and liberty applause we are hearing the end of a political campaign that has developed much bitterness and ill feeling on both sides but I 1 propose to be led if I 1 am elected for the important office to which you have nominated me solely by a desire for the public good to follow as near as possible the line of my official duty to all classes of citizens citi zens alike applbaum Ap A the platform ot of the peoples People la party embodies what is needed as a guide in the safe just and economical government of this growing city a city that is destined to become the greatest of this vast mountain region applause the motives that underlie the he liberal party are not such that I 1 can consistently endorse althou although h in there are men of sterling worth in their ranks notably the gentleman who to is their candidate for mayor prove an best efforts to defeat do not my friends let the success that has followed our past political experiences lead us to be less leas vigilant and zealous in the present struggle but on the contrary lot let us unite and cast our legal votes for the man of our choice see that they are honestly counted and the victory is ours cheers W when ben quiet was again restored mr richards evoked another storm by introducing HEBER M WELLS who said mr chairman ladies and gentlemen my friends tell me the announcement no that I 1 am no speechmaker to is getting very stale and I 1 tell my friends friende stale as it is that it is as true as when it was originally made I time to somewhat reverse this order of things I 1 am about to tell you something in regard to one of your own candidates at which you will doubtless recoil with horror notwithstanding all the caution all the prudence all the judgment exercised by the recent convention they have nominated a 11 suspect f laughter 1 I have a document which will explain lain the situation more fully before ore reading it I 1 desire to commend the wisdom and forethought of the convention which in its last hours resolved that in case any of the nominees on the ticket were disabled or rendered ineligible in any amy way before the election that the central committee should call the delegates together again to fill the vacancy so occasioned I 1 tell you that the convention wiser than it knew now is the time for you to recoil with horror attend ov OF UTAH crry CITY AND AIM COUNTY OP OF SALT LANZ LAKE an 68 I 1 david webb a qualified voter of the city of salt bait lake hereby object to the right of heber M X prolonged cheering three hearty cheers were then given mr wells following which came a piece by the drum corps A W CARLSON next dext came forward amid applause he said he realized very keenly that poring over account books for wenty five years had not qualified him for the stage but mv experience may be of iise ase in the position of treasurer and help me to bring out a clean balance sheet and keep the cash straight had I 1 consulted my own feelings feeling sI should have asked at the convention to have my name withdrawn but this is no time for the peoples peopled party to back out applause the backing must be done by somebody else I 1 am proud to be associated with the names on this ticket I 1 know them all to be honorable men aled worthy of the support of every fair man and honest
