occupied 1 by the delegates who were eaffy early in their seats and the tee remaining portions of the room were thrown open to spectators by whom the building was crowded to its ito utmost capacity hon F S richards called the convention to order and said gentlemen of the convention pursuant to the call of the municipal central committee you have bare been selected by the members of the peo ples party who reside in salt lake city ity and have assembled for the purpose of nominating candidates for the offices to be filled at the election which takes place on the of february next the officers to be elected at that time are those of mayor recorder treasurer marshal assessor and collector members of the city council and justices of the peace under the original charter of the city there here were five aldermen to be voted for and nine councilors councillors counci lors under the municipal incorporation act the council is composed of fifteen councilmen the question arose as to which of those acts would govern at this election although the supreme court has passed upon the question I 1 suggest to you that it might be prudent in addition to the nominations of and justices of the peace to to provide for five aldermen as well the duty and responsibility that devolve upon this convention eDtion are more tm than any that have ever been entrusted to a municipal convention in the misto history of utah and upon the art honest a and faithful perform performance anee of that duty will depend the future welfare of our fair city you should enter upon the discharge of this sacred task with earnestness and solemn thought for it is worthy of your consecrated zeal there are men in the peoples party whose characters are above reproach whose reputations have never been sullied and whose ability is recognized not only in salt lake but throughout the territory of utah and abroad in this great land these are they whom you are commissioned to designate as the standard bearers of the peoples party parly in the coming campaign applause Ine I 1 need ednot not caution you against allowing any unworthy motives to influence your actions in this important matter you ton are the representatives of the people and you should express their will rather than thanyous your own individual preferences be wise be patriotic be just so move and vote in this matter that your efforts will be t crowned with victory and that in 0 all the years that are to come you will be justly proud that your names were enrolled among the trusted applause I 1 confidently believe that you will nominate app applause lauge there was no other nomination and mr wells was elected by unanimous vote chairman wells said gentlemen of the convention I 1 thank you yon for the honor you yon have conferred upon me in making me your chairman even temporarily I 1 do not know how often I 1 will be called upon to make the statement that I 1 am no speechmaker speech apepe h maker berose I 1 pass aws away y into the next world I 1 believe that I 1 have already made that statement this winter as many times as I 1 have fingers and toes but I 1 can say that I 1 am proud to be the chairman of this convention of the members then started for the theatre at the head bead of the column marched held johnsons band playing the red bed white and blue 11 the he column was half a block in length on arrival atthe theatre a large crowd had assembled in front of that building and greeted the delegates with three rousing cheers inside of the building the was reserved reBer ved for members of C the convention the took a recess for ten minutes and the band rendered enlivening music the committee or oi permanent organization 9 a U and order of business reported as follows that the permanent organization consist hull rid and sergeant at ai arms folland were made permanent officers E A smith was elected fl first rat vice president and wm puller fuller second vice president C L berry and D S spencer were nominated for assistant amista tit secretary mr berry was elected by a vote of 62 to 43 H PR ichards and robert patrick were nominated for chaplain mr patrick withdrew and david mckenzie was nominated mr richards was elected ch chaplain hain richards offered prayer D warrington harrington moved to adjourn the motion was lost D S spencer said I 1 arise to place in nomination the name of the man who will be the next mayor of salt lake city I 1 wish to say to you that the name I 1 propose to present is one that you all know it is the name of a man who can be trusted in all respects a man who was born bom here reared here and who through his own energy has established for himself a reputation and character that are beyond reproach from anyone whether it be from our friends or our enemies I 1 wish you to think thoroughly of the name and if you do that I 1 am thoroughly confident that he will be without the exa existence of a doubt the successful candidate of the party thal thai name gentleman is spencer clawson prolonged applause 8 A kenner said mr chairman and gentlemen I 1 I 1 rise to pro nose to you yon a name which I 1 am sure will call forth equally as great enthusiasm as the one just atte uttered per perhaps ape greater indeed I 1 think that if the united people ople of this city could be present to hear rear the name that will be presented I 1 am sure they would add their plaud its but as the united people are not here we will have to consider the question among ourselves the name of the gentleman whom I 1 propose to present presen t I 1 is s one that is familiar to everybody eve r in this community whether le he has had occasion to participate in political affairs or not for the simple reason that he be has at all times and in all ail circumstances for the last ten years been prominently before the people not only in an official capacity 01 ay but in a personal capacity hn he is a gentleman who is so well known that to mention his bis name to Is to mention that he is well known to everybody he is known as an example to us no for system in business by reason of his long term of service by reason of the fact that for a great many years he has been the right hand man of the city government one who called to any position has been the right individual a gentleman who has been trusted tried and true a gentleman who has been where he be has held the respect of men even of those who do not think as he does he has so deported himself that he has never given unnecessary offense to the people of the city he has at all times maintained their respect while he has had their confidence A man who above all things represents that public and growing feeling which now above all other sentiments is for young utah to be brought to the front A man who to is within himself the popular idea of 4 young utah applause and can hold a large majority not simply because of any physical strength but because of the fact that he was born and reared upon this soil and that within himself he be illustrates what it is possible to accomplish com oom in the peoples party A young man who has never wavered in the performance of duty gentlemen in presenting to you the name that I 1 am about to otter assure you that he will give the greatest satisfaction not only to boling U utah tah but also to those on the other side in presenting his name I 1 simply voice the sentiment of the majority of this convention when I 1 ask you to care fulla consider the name of heber M wis wells prolonged cheers major armstrong said he would nominate a true and trusted servant of the people a man who well be placed at the head of the ticket john dark clark applause mr clark has never faltered he has been and is today the friend of the people B F cummings Cum minga jr in seconding mr clarks nomination said experience peri ence judgment and character were necessary in the present circumstances cum stances and john clark would meet these requirements there were none more suitable W H bywater said he wanted a man of experience at the head of the ticket a man who was representative of the people who was known to every citizen citi zeo who was acquainted with every great question among them the water question a very important one here this question had caused much deliberation and the man best beat acquainted it was george M ottinger cheers and applause la in his district are more peoples peopled party voters than in any other district and he would poll a heavier vote than any 0 ther other man he has expended for the city vast quantities of money and has the confidence of the people M S woolley seconded aed mr ottinger tin or as the next mayor N W clayton se condel spencer clawson as the next mayor of salt 8 alt lake and a man who had never been in office dr benedict said that if there was any map man who was suitable for mayor may or it was mr ottinger T F howells moved that the convention proceed to ballot N W clayton moved to amend by adding that the president appoint fi five ve tellers the motion as amended was carried the tellers appointed were N W clayton arthur |
