tor newton noyes A vocal duet beautiful moonlight was creditably rendered by misses ettie penrose and jennie smith brother nathan gedge a student of the intermediate department of the college delivered an address in behalf of that department paying paying a warm tribute to the methods of m st ruction andio and to the feelings existing among the students and between students and teachers brother nathan porter of the academic department delivered an eloquent address on behalf of the atu students dents of that department dwelling principally upon the he general genera unity which has existed among the students and between them and those of the lower department the range of the subjects treated in this department was spoken of the regulation requiring each student to pursue a certain variety of studies being particularly commended the natural result of such a regulation is that a broad foundation will be laid for future study the mutual interlacing of these branches and the harmony existing between the various courses were spoken of clear lines have always been drawn between theory and fact that the students may not become confused but the chief feature to which reference could be made is the theological work performed which has had bad the effect of impressing upon the minds of the s students that desire and zeal for tudy study which is so necessary to the sentiment of of the lady students of the college is IF one of the greatest satisfaction at the opportunities afforded them for their advancement A tribute was paid to the spirit to be observed in the institution and the thought was expressed that the education of the ladies cannot be dispensed with instructor joseph nelson spoke upon the subject of the business courses which have been under big h iff care these courses have comprised the studies of boota keeping commercial law commercial arithmetic and higher arithmetic and those who have passed the examinations aminat ami nations tons prescribed have earned the special mention which will be made of them during these exorcism exercises the courses named above were described with some detail and the benefits of their study shown instructor willard done followed with bearing upon the course in literature and hist history olry comprising the studies of english literature general history civil government and elementary german in which branches one student has passed I 1 instructor done also dwelt at some length on the practical exercises attendant upon the studies pursued during the year the idea has been maintained that nothing should be taught without being given a practical bearing upon the affairs of life the principal followed by reading the names of the following students who have successfully passed the course the fact that students apply for admission who are entirely unqualified through lack of training in elementary branches to pursue the lowest studies of this department of necessity the passing of test examinations has been made a requisite for entrance and upward of 50 have been denied admittance during the present school year through their inability to enter the intermediate classes it is to be the si udies of this department have been arranged in courses with reference to the final graduation of the students six such courses have been provided provi jed viz physical science natural science mathematics business courses literature and histo ry and three students have completed with success the business courses and odethe one the courses iu in literature and history and these have this day reek ived their certificates with varying degrees of efficiency the other course in which no graak ates at present appear have not been without their ardent devo devotees but many of these lines of study are long and arduous and great time is required for the completion of the courses the rhe principal princia 1 has deemed it advisable to recommend to students great caution in making their applications for final examination lest they in ih some degree imbibe the idea that has proved itself so de tive to true progress in scholastic pursuits the belief that the se curing of documentary evidence of efficiency is itself a guarantee of knowledge VIE theological EXERCISES nave have been conducted during the term with no essential va variation nation from the methods previously reported daily sessions of the theological classes have been held the exercises of which comprised lectures by the instructors and the study of assigned lessons in the standard works of the church and the answering of incidental questions upon subjects of general interest testimony meetings have been hel I 1 in each departmental department at intervals of two weeks and students have given ancile proof of their sincere int interest Wrest in the exercises the monthly fast day has been regularly observed by appropriate exercises which on that day have bave taken the place of the recitation in theology the weekly biweekly bi priesthood aeeti meeting 09 an I 1 the weekly gene general iral theological class have continued as heretofore with increasing interest appropriate devotional exercises comprising singing and prayer have been conducted at the opening and closing of each days session we have been specially favored during the term with valuable instructions from elder george reynolds who has conducted the academic elass in book of mormon study twice per week the gentle mans ability as an expounder of the book of mormon which is so well known and so generally acknowledged among our peo le has been willingly and ele ribe liberally ibe rally raly applied to the assistance si of our students in this important part of their theological study our earnest thanks are due elder for his efficient aid according to their church standing the students have been recorded as follows high priests 1 seventies 2 elders 12 priests 8 teachers 9 deacons 60 total bearin ur priesthood 92 lay members non members 2 general total our thanks are due the officers and members of the choir who have added so much to the fervor of the devotional exercises elder edwin cutler has acted as choir leader anti and brother clare W reid beld as organist to our fu full U satisfaction THE LADY STUDENTS have continued in the labors of the ladies class under the careful direction of our lady superintendent mrs camilla cobb he class has met in two sections arranged according to the ages of the members section A comprised 87 ladies a and has held duri during ug the term 21 sessions dr mattie P R hughes rendered very valuable assistance to the organization tiou by delivering a series of six lectures upon the subject personal hygiene for women class B consisted of 14 members all under the age of fifteen of this division 16 aest sessions lons have hav 0 b been ee n held during the term THE STUDENTS SOCIETY has bus been conducted under the presidency ot of instructor done with miss anna erickson associated as secretary evening meetings have been held at the close of each week with but few omissions there have been since the open opening liag cf the term fourteen such meetings meeting sat at which nine le tures have been delivered and five varied grammes programmed pro of literary and musical exercises have been rendered beside the members of the faculty and many records kept the apparatus owned and used by the institution and the library call for no lao special report additional to that made to you at the close of the preceding term THE BUILDINGS at present occupied by the college afford but very inadequate accommodations for the departments of the institution we feel that as far as the number of cl classes asseF and the grades of study are concerned we have practically reached the limit of our growth until more ample facilities are provided if additional room cannot be secured for the coming year the advisability of dispensing with the lower divisions of etheln fe intermediate ter department should be co considered nel dered in addition to those whose kind acts have heen been already referred to OUR acknowledgments are due the railway companies of this region notable the various branches of the union pacific system the denver 4 ro rio brande the utah central and the salt lake city railway for the privileges of reduced fares which have been ex tended to our students under prescribed rules also to the proprietors and officials of the various industrial and manufacturing establishments in and around the city for numerous
