Show FORT CAMERON ACCORDING to figures that have been laid before the present session of the legislature it will cost to complete the territorial insane asylum at provo Wb when enthat that amount of money is expended upon it it will accommodate from 40 to 60 50 more patients than are am now in it but there are about 60 insane pa in the territory in whose behalf applications have been made for admission to the asylum in other words when the territory shall have paid out more to finish the institution at provo it will not accommodate all the patients who are now waiting for its completion if these figures are reliable they are discouraging that a quarter of a million dollars should be expended on one institution which when finished is found to be toa too small to accommodate the insane patients found in a population no greater than that of this territory who are under the necessity of becoming a public charge to is disappointing these are a among mon ebo reasons why a proposition has been made to and entertained entert by the present legislature look looking fiig to tho th purchase of fort cameron by the territory for use as a refuge for the insane the fort is situated near beaver and comprises a number of han handsome druie and expensive buildings costing originally in the neighborhood of WO ample water privileges and acres 4 of good land jand are included in the property whose present owners offer 9 after fter jt it for less leas than ten per cent of the first fl rat cost of the buildings the latter are said to be well adapted ft for the purposes of an insane asylum and capable of accommodating from to patients to establish a branch asylum at fort cameron would of courso course necessitate the expense of an additional corps of physicians nurses etc but this argument is met cef with the statement that the interest on the money necessary to provide ample accommodations at provo would almost if not quite pay the extra salaries there is another arioth dr argument in favor of the purchase of fort cameron and that to is the urgent need which exists for foi the immediate relief of the insane still another Is the fact that the property must enhance in value as time passes the joint legislative committee charged with th the e investigation of this subject started for port fort cameron yesterday and their return to Is expected early next week their report will be awaited with much interest in and out of the assembly |
