| Show THE RED BUTTE QUARRIES the facts regarding the trouble over them F I 1 the stone quarries in red butte canon having become a topic of public dibe discussion assion a representative has investigated the matter with a view to ascertaining the facts and as result the following statement has in substance been obtained from lion hon john W young some years ao ago the salt like lake rock hock company acquired title to a little more than taree sections of lend land in and near red butte canon embracing that on which rock had long been quarried and also certain water rights after the corporation a acquired e title to the I 1 d on which th the e quarries were situ the public of course had bad n no 79 regal III right to continuo continue to take sto fis as had been the case w while ile jhc thc cd belonged to the pub public ic do boult 1 rt though many persons continued to 10 do this in course of time KOH HOB john W young became the leading stockholder of the company though at the time he purchased be stock he knew ariew nothing thing of it any is in the matter after lie he became a 4 stockholder in the company 4 ae opened negotiations with the government erill gent which resulted in the passage aud nd sp approval of an act of congress under ander the terms of which the rock company conveyed to the government certain water rights for the itce benefit of fort douglas and also conveyed to the government three sections of land to which the rock company had bad acquired a legal title in return for these concessions to the government the rock company were granted certain advantages among which was the exclusive elusive right to take building mat from the three sections the fee of which the company was re transferring to the government and from three other sections contiguous thereto thustle thus the rock company possesses by virtue of this grant from the exclusive right to take building material and minerals from s si sections of laud land lia in aua and near red butte E ante carion canon a right which was secured in return for a valuable consideration and under an act of congress the rock company also secured at the same time and in the same name manner the right to construct wagon roads railroads and trails on those six sections but these sections were withdrawn from the market and are not subject to disposal to private parties the withdrawal from sale by the government of these six sections section af laud land ot of course obliterates any and all squatters or other rights which private parties may have acquired in to or upon them notwithstanding that the salt lake rock company has ane exclusive right to t take ake bull building ding materials and min brals from the lands in question certain parties have continually disregarded that right and have hauled off large quantities of building material which belonged to the rock company the rock company has made some efforts to defend its rights and prop property arty one act of self defense being ave me closing of a wagon road a short time ago at a point on the lands covered by the franchise above set forth road had been constructed strutted ted by the rock company for its own owl use and it acted upon its right to close the kameas it was ka a every sense a private road the reason for closing it was that trespassers were using it to haul away rock which belonged to the company parties who tor for many years past have been in the of haull hauling ag rock from red lied butte canon cafin naturally feel put about at being deprived of tile the of doing so any longer but they aney have no legal right to exercise that privilege in view ot of the contract existing between the government sovern ment and the rock company nor can they justly list blame the latter for insi oling taing that its rights be respected in order to mitigate as much as possible the inconvenience veni ence which way may be experienced by p ettes who have hitherto earned a livelihood by the red butte quarries the rock company Is trying to employment to them in n preference to other laborers and as a matter of fact a much larger number ok of men are beim employed emy loyed d at tile the quarries now than ever bedore |
