| Show SUNDAY SERVICES religious services in the tabernacle sunday nor 4 1888 commenced at 2 p m president angus M X cannon presiding the choir sang praise ye the lord itis good to join in work so pleasant so divine prayer by elder robert campbell the choir and congre congregation gatto n sang the spirit of god like a fire is burning the latter day glory begins td to come forth the priesthood of 0 the filth fifth ward i officiated in the administration of the i sacrament ELDER JAMBS OSWALD addressed the congregation in 1885 he fie left his home on a mission to the band sandwich bandrich islands where he be spent two and and a halt half years learning lea aning the language of the natives and laboring as a missionary he returned about a a year ago white while absent he had baptized sixteen natives the elders in those islands do not hive have the same difficulties to contend wibb as do the elders in the southern states but their faith is tried nevertheless especially pec ally lally in learning to eat the food of the natives there are about four thousand native saints on oa the islands which avows how bow the mission has grown since it was first opened s ELDER E G WOOLLEY was the next speaker he felt his bis weakness more when addressing a c congregation than in almost any other position 8 in which he be could be placed ine abter day aay nave have a peculiar mission to perform and are required to be different from froin any other people in the world they should be the beat people on the earth and the speaker believed they viere were they have greater light than any other people on earth possess and unless th they are the best people in the world worl 17 they are not what thy they should be it is not the mission of the latter day saints to operate for the overthrow or disorganization of any government established by man their mission is to establish the kingdom of god but to do this it is not necessary for them t to pi pull 11 J d down 0 rn any earthly speaker could noc understand why y v there should be appo manifested towards the saints for laboring to 0 o establish the kingdom of god the world seems to be afraid that the unity of ef tae saints and their gathering together will give them a strength that will enable them to interfere with existing forms of government but the world need nave have no such fear for it is not the mission of the latter day saints to I 1 interfere with nor pull down established forms of government when the saints have filled up these vaIlle val lles 8 they will spread into other states and territories aud perhaps into other nat nations iOuS why should anyone object to this why should anyone object to a people preparing themselves for the ahe coming of the son of mao man the speaker dwelt upon the future progress and growth of the saints in numbers and power and said that this growth would be rapid it the saints would WO uld be united he also dwelt upon the evils that would attend division among them division destroys that feeling of fellowship which should prevail among the saints when they partake of the sacrament the speaker felt that there was never a time tim when ewhen greater need existed for the saints to possess the spirit of the lord than the present lor for agencies are at work which seek to divide them APOSTLE H J GRANT next spoke he be was ever willing to the extent ot of his bis ability to instruct the saints but he felt fell toe the responsibility ot of such a duty the latter day saints are not understood many strangers who come into our midst expressly to obtain information concerning us fall fail in that object because they tall fall into the hands of those who mili cpr misrepresent us all the saints can do is to keep the commandments of god ape promise is that all who do this shall know of the doctrine whether it be of god or man we ought so to live that all men may see aee our good works and be led ed to glorify god the unity ot of the latter day saints astonishes the world and is accounted lor for on en the theory that they are led by a ie few w sharp shrewd men who have succeeded in deluding the masses but the real secret ot this unity is the spirit which is id received alike by the convert on the sandwich islands in scandinavia and all parts ot of the world the spirit of the lord by whick the saints are impelled to gather together the claim that the latter day saints are an exclusive people is unfounded they believe that all men may be saved A religion which provides tor lor the salvation of all men cannot be very exclusive nor bigoted the latter day saints are expending millions of dollars for the salvation of men living and dead they erect costly temples that they may enter therein and perform vicariously for the dead the ordinances of the gospel god deals with us up on the same game principle on which we deal with our children it our children are disobedient we punish them perhaps by restraining in 9 them from their amusements for a time tim e so the lord punishes us when we rebel against his laws joseph smith prophesied that the I 1 time would come when not only a single biagi state would be arrayed against the latter day saints but that the whole nation would be tola this prediction has been literally fulfilled fui ful tIlled for in the newspapers pers ot the da day we read react of suits at law the united abates states vs the church of jesus christ of latter day saints thus we see the nation arrayed against this church some may say that this has all come about in a natural way I 1 care gothow not how it has come about it is a fulfillment of prophecy the speaker dwelt at some length on the practical duties ot life the principles of the moral law and the duties imposed upon the saints by their religion and exhorted them to diligence and faithfulness he closed by bearing a positive testimony to the truth of this work in which the latter day saints are arc engaged the choir sang lord
