presented here enough of it is given to show that the conclusions arrived at by the commission are cou firmed by the experience of other states where problems similar to our own have been before tile to several professors who are connected with leading institutions it is generally assumed that universities versi ties favor the consolidation of the state institutions of higher lea ining and that agricultural colleges oppose such combination how far this assumption is borne out by facts may may lie be gathered from the following of the sixty eight letters received awen ty six are from colleges of this number ten favored separation of the state institutions five would mould combine or separate them according to local conditions and cleven ore are tili unqualifiedly qualifiedly in favor of 0 combination it may also be said concerning conc eining the letters here submitted that the standing of the men who ciote them the manifest desire of the writers to be impartial and the scope and character of the answers glie ghe to this symposium an unusual ind and permanent value A few illuminating extracts from the voluminous evidence taken by ille the commission are given a place here the tables included in this appendix numbered from one to seventeen explanatory statistics tile the Un university hersity of utah now cow comprises a school of arts ard and sciences a school ot mines and normal formal school located on one site in salt lake city it il also has a preparatory school of ahree years graduates of which are admitted to any course in the university ver sity on the basis of a requite anent of th alnee I 1 ce years preparatory vork ork for entrance the university has in its three schools students and in the Pierl preparatory Pie school COG students the agricultural college is at logan and it has a preparatory school of two years graduates of which may enter any department ot cil the college on the basis of a requirement of 0 three bears ears preparatory work for entrance there are bet between neen fifty and seventy five students in the Agil agricultural cultural college and something more than in the pie school thus the actual number of colle college e students in the state on the basis of three years pie school is something more than the total lota population of our state Is less than the assessed valuation of property of the state slate in ili 1905 was zhe the last state stale appropriation to the agricultural college to covey covel expenses es for two years was the amount asked ivas the general governments appropriation pria tion to the Agil agricultural cultural college for two bears Is total asked for total received the last state appropriation to tile the university of 0 utah to cover expenses for two years was the amount asked for was the university of utah needs a number of new buildings the agricultural college needs a number of new buildings the two schools asked for a part of their actual needs and were denied them because th eState could not afford so EO much money in that direction the college classes are small in both institutions many of the classes numbering f from roni one to afif fifteen teen stu dents friends of each institution are arc present in the lobbies at each session of the legislature the reason for maintaining the preparatory schools in connection with these institutions is that there are few high schools in our state we have only 15 or 20 fairly good high schools public and sectarian but the high school spirit is growing there have been quite a number of high schools started recently each of which is giving one or two or ehtee years of work in the last state teachers association c a committee was appointed to ask the next legislature legisla tuie for some money to aid in the establishment of high schools and there is a feeling on the part of many that preparatory work should be eliminated aiom tile the higher institutions cutting out a year at a time beginning with the lower years each of the two institutions offers work in english engleh language and literature era ture french german spanish latin history sociology economics law mathematics astronomy chemistry zoology and entomology physiology si sl botany horticulture e bacteriology anatomy geology mineralogy physics surveying hydraulics ait physical Eu education cation woodwork wood work I 1 metalwork
