terrific terr itic thunder storm hat bat prevailed in this valley last evening the lightning played some startling freaks in the th upper portion of the twentieth ward this cit aits about six there was a aea deafening fening rolla roar 1 and a crack of the artillery of heaven about that time the house of john F olsen at tile the corner of C and sixth sixta streets was considerably damaged the electric fluid struck the roof near the east side of the building slid and descended into the interior tearing out shingles shek sheathing thing lath and plaster in its descent it carried away portions of two partition walls ran along the kitchen floor and tore up the boards exposing the ground underneath der neath it struck a sink in the northe northeast a s t corner of the room and demolished it twisting 1 the galvanized iron into peculiar shapes and shivering the woodwork into splinters in its passage ol outward at the northeast corner the current tore out some of the rocks of the foundation and damaged the woodwork some outside flooring was lifted and hurled burled a distance of eight or ten roos rode clear across the street into an ac j iceal lot there there are five doors leading out of mr alsens kitchen four of them I 1 were torn from their hinges binges and thrown down and every door in ia the ane house is mor mow or less leis twisted or loosened slight damage olsen olaen had a narrow escape from death A few moments before the building was wa struck she was wag engaged in scrubbing inu the kitchen floor she was unaccountably and apparently appa antly without any evident reason prompted to go into an adjoining room and take her baby from it into another she had just passed through the kitchen into the adjoining apartment when the crash came the door through which she had passed an instant before was torn from its place and tell fell against her when she turned she saw the kitchen in a blaze of light and an odor of burning pervaded the place she imagined that the structure was on tire fire and as soun soon an she could free herself from her pre precious cloas burden the baby she rushed out and seized the water hose in the hope hop e of extinguishing the flames but by this time she realized what had oe oc burred had she remained in the kitchen at work she doubtless would have been instantly killed about the time the lightning lights ing struck mr alsens son anton ancon eleven years old was passing around the north end ead of the house bouse the current came in contact with his bis foot and for a short time a portion of the member was partially paralyzed but the effect was only temporary as he soon recovered the family were thrown into great consternation by the incident and mrs olsen as may be expected has not yet recovered from the excitement afie damage falls heavily upon them as mr alsens circumstances are not as good as coull could be desired and the family is large the case affords an opportunity to the benevolently disposed to extend a helping hand in a time of need MR SMYTH STRUCK at the same instant that these circumstances cum stances were transpiring at mr alsens house bouse a striking incident occurred at
