Show ONE MORE SUICIDE an unknown X man n ends his life late by poisoning about 4 yesterday afternoon dr 3 E smith of washington D C 1 made a ghastly discovery on the mountain about a quarter of a mile west of ensign peak the doctor came to salt lake a few days ago on a visit and yesterday after afternoon noo n went upon the hills north ot the city to enjoy the magnificent view of the valley there obtainable about the hour named he was going from the base ot of bus ensign peak down the mountain side towards the warm springs bath house when about half way between the peak and the cave he observed a pile of red sand and out of curiosity went to examine it it was on the brink of an old stone quarry which the doctor looked into there lie ae saw the feet of a man protruding from behind a rock the man was evidently lying dowland dow nand and this caused the doctor to 10 make a further investigation which revealed to him that a human heing being LLY DEAD IN THE QUARRY the unknown man was lying in an easy position as though asleep but the horrible stench left no doubt that the spark of life had fled and that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition at lir was thought that he was a colored man as the body had tur turned ned perfectly black it bad not been disturbed however except that th the eyes were eaten away tr dr smith did not long remain in the presence of the horrible sight but reported at about five to city marshal solomua solomon the latter with coroner george J taylor and others went to the place and the body was conveyed to sexton patricks of office ficle where the inquest was called for nine this morning near where the body was found were the scraps of a card of the st elmo hotel it had evidently been thrown there eherd BEFORE THE RAIN STORM last week though by whom was sot not known inquiry was made at the hotel but no light could be obtained there it was said that the cards had only been printed five days but this could co old not be as it wa plain that the card found had been there a longer time than that from another source however it was ascertained that the cards au iau i ts had been printed primed more vau than ten lays it u the inquest this morning T C Pat pattens tenH horseley and A Kimo all were sworn jurors and aad made vi a i examination of the body la in company with dr smith no injuries of any kind were found on the body ait pr the preliminaries had been jae through with dr smith was as a witness he stated slated how he came to find the body as already given and said we found on the body at the examination we made this morning two handkerchiefs a bunch of keys a slate pencil lead pencil pocket knife silver watch and chain chaia pocket book with 45 in gold and in silver and a memorandum book in which was a statement made by the deceased in regard to his contemplated SUICIDE he was evidently a man of re 1 was five ve feet ten inches in height and weighed about 18 or pounds there were no injuries about his head or body bis big hair and mustache were black he be wa partly bald was about 40 years old eld had a black coat vest diagonal pattern and aid pants panto with black and drab str stripes a ruo light brown felt hat th ther ewas no 13 name ame on OB anything found on the body nor anything from which his bis identity could be learned his death wast dently from froin poisoning whenn when 1 I first 0 saw aw him he was lying on a purplish colored overcoat 71 city marshal solomon testified chat between 5 and 6 last esq evening dr smith r reported ha covert the body of a man 0 nad I 1 it east of the warm 4 oath ath house and between the cave an and Ign peak I 1 went out to the place and saw the body it was lying in an easy position as though he had laid down to sleep 9 his hat was on his dead and his bis overcoat spread out under him lie he was well d dressed sl was lying id 1 the old stone quarry his EYES WERE PICKED OUT but his bis body was otherwise undisturbed he had bad possibly been there two or three weeks no bottle could be found as he be had probably thrown it away among the rocks the memorandum the deceased was here produced in evidence it was badly stained with grease it was bound in paper covers of a bluish gray tint and on a few leaves at either end there had evidently been some writing these leaves were wap tow attl but on the pieces that oteff could be deciphered but not sufficient to be of any benefit in the investigation the leaves had evidently been removed so that nothing could be found to indicate the name add address or occupation of the owner who edg edg ing from the contents of ef the statement nad had been contemplating suicide for a considerable length of time following is THE STATEMENT SALT I 1 1 E city r have come here for the p purpose of putting an end to my life no one would blame vae toe it if they knew my reason for it my reason for coming to a strange place is 14 so that my identity will not my pe people ople are all respect able but bit I 1 am the aoe black sheep of wy my fabers fathers fold my people are thousands of miles from here so the best way is to td take the 50 which you yon will find in m 0 a rough exam boband bury my remain sIt may be that I 1 will never be found for fori I 1 propose going out into the country if if not it win will be all the better 1 feel very sad dying in such a way but it was brought 9 an n by my own dissipation may god for C give me and may god bless the ones that may find we me and treat mg me as a human being good bye A little farther on an in the memorandum book this was found if my body is found and the 50 will not defray the expenses please sell my watch I 1 dont want to tobe be a burden to anyone then was added the following postscript it was evidently written just as the poison was beginning to take effect the first few words were in a steady hand band but soon the writing BECAME A SCRAWL 0 and towards the close the hand of the writer was decidedly shaky he evidently realized what was coming for the book had bad been put back in his coat pocket ive taken the laudanum but Ilear I 1 fear it is not going to dathe da the worl work I 1 foal feel happy and want to 10 die I 1 have falth faith in god and trust he will carry pae me safely through the valley of death my p people eople are all methodists and if I 1 die T would like to be burled buried by the methodists at one time I 1 was a i member of that church 11 this was all the articles mentioned were tied in the handkerchiefs and were found beside the body the request in reference to the burial service was followed by the coroner andl Sexton patrick rev 0 L libby of the methodist church performed the f funeral rites of that denomination and the body of the unknown wits was placed in the grave the money left in his bis purse parse being used in giving him a decent burial |
