Here at SUU, thousands of students are the importance of their overemphasizing is done This through pulling generally grades. an during midterms, or spending weekends in the library, but we hardly hear of college students racking up on internships or job opportunities in their desired field. Now, we at the Journal do realize some majors and jobs are highly affected by what grade-poiaverage (GPA) a student has or how well they did on a test, but most jobs are looking more at a portfolio rather than a test score. Here are just a few reasons why the staff of the University Journal think it is more important for most majors to think about their overall time on campus, rather than focus on .the generic tests. Grade inflation is a common part of most academic processes, and is known as the practice of giving higher grades for work that would have received lower grades in the past. This makes it more difficult to identify the best students since more people are given the highest possible grade. According to a study by the Teachers College Record, 43 percent of letter grades given are As. So while a person may See themselves as a student with a 4.0 cumulative GPA to be in the two percent of all college grads, they may actually only be in the top 43 percent. Now that doesnt mean a student should slack off. According to a survey of more than 200 employers conducted in August and September of 2013 by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 67 percent of companies said they screened candidates by their GPA. This means before a candidate is even able to meet for an interview or get the job they must show a transcript to their potential employer. Another reason why experience matters is that, ultimately, employers want to hire someone they feel will be able to get the job done. No employer has time to stand over their employees shoulder all day when they should be handling their own workload. This knowledge is generally not gained in a classroom but by the experience a person has from previous work. Additionally, with experience comes a network of past or present bosses or clients. A person can have a 4.0 GPA, but if they dont have the connections in the field they want to pursue, finding a job may be even harder. When it comes down to it, does the person with a 4.0 GPA have a higher intellect and more qualifications than a person with 3.5 GPA? Not necessarily. For example, if the student with the 3.5 GPA also had a part time job and two prestigious internships, that is much more impressive than a person with a 4.0 GPA and no involvement in activities, internships or jobs. but remember, theres more Its all to an education than just those all nighters for the highest GPA. Students should work to be well rounded if they are looking for that dream job after graduation. all-night- er nt relieves Rimming anxiety Running long distances has always been looked at as pure meditate.
