These trails are not the only trails within a 30 minute range, but offer a variety of sights for beginner hikers. Lions Mouth Cave, located west of Cedar City, looks like a lions head from below. The cave, while not very deep, has Native American pictographs. Students wishing to get to the trailhead can travel west on State Route 56 to Pinto Road. After turning left onto Pinto Road, the trailhead is 1.2 miles down the road on the right. The hike from the trailhead to the cave is only a few hundred yards and well marked. Three Peaks Recreation Area, located about 10 miles northwest of Cedar City, has miles of marked trails to hike, bike, run or drive. Horse trails are also available there. Three Peaks is on Midvalley Road. To get there, students can travel west on State Route 56 and turn left on Lund Highway then head north until Midvalley Road and take a left. Parowan Gap, located 13 miles north of Cedar City, is a naturally formed cut in the small hills north of Enoch, where Native American petroglyphs can be found in abundance. Students can spend a few minutes there, or an entire day exploring the region. Travelers wanting to go to Parowan Gap can take State Route 130 north for about 13 miles and turn right onto a maintained gravel road. From there, the road travels right through the Gap. Hidden Haven , part of the Parowan Canyon State Wilderness Management Area, is a short hike to the bottom of a waterfall. Hidden Haven is located on State Route 143, the road to Brian Head Resort. To get there, students can travel north to Parowan and fpllow the signs to Brain Head. Parowan Canyon State Wilderness Management Area is located approximately eight miles lam from the town of Parowan on SR 143. Ashdown Gorge is the area below Cedar Breaks National Monument. The gorge is very narrow, with Coal Creek running through it. Students can get to the bottom of Ashdown Gorge by going east on State Route 14 out of Cedar City. Parking for the Gorge is located about 8 miles east on SR 14. Hiking from there will only take as long as hikers want. A few miles into the canyon, Flanigans Arch can be found up high on the canyon wall. A variation of this hike is to park on SR 14 and then travel up to Cedar Breaks National Monument and hike down from there. This trail is a 10 mile strenuous hike which takes several hours to complete. The starts at the Cedar City overlook. To get to the overlook, hikers will go five miles on State Route 14 and turn right on the Kolob Reservoir Road. Follow this road 4.5 miles to the signed trailhead, where the hike starts. Spring Creek will be part of the Mini Adventures trips held every Tuesday at 3 p.m. Outdoor opportunities are abundant more becoming on SUUs campus with the Pacesetters Clubs new Mini which Adventures leave every Tuesday at 3 p.m. from SUU Outdoors in the Sharwan Center. Smith Student Amanda Wilcock, an outdoor recreation in parks and tourism major from Oakley, is planning outdoor create to more recreation for opportunities SUU students through what she calls Mini Adventures. Wilcock, who created the Mini Adventures, said she hopes people will get out more often. She said there are amazing sights near Cedar City, but people just have to get outside and see them. The trips wont be very elaborate, since most of the target students dont have the time or means, Wilcock said. Theyll just entail going to nearby places most people dont even know exist. She said a few places around Cedar City shell try to get students out to include; Three Peaks Recreation Area, the Crystal Caves. Kanarra Falls and some petroglyph panels. No needed, experience everyone just needs to bring good clothes, shoes and water, Wilcock said. Breanna Bassett, president of the Pacesetters Club, said the Mini Adventures will be a great addition to the outdoor recieation opportunities already being olfered at the Harry Reid Outdoor Engagement Center. There are things that are located within a few minutes drive from SUU, Bassett said, Itll be a great way to kick back and get to know some fellow classmates while doing something fun.
