Natalie Miller College of Education, said she was m favor of this bill This is one way of telling students that we are here to have fun, she said Some believed this was the best way to motivate students to fill out evaluations Those who opposed the bill said they believed that there could have been fewer than 13 iPods given as pnzes Sen David Welsh, School of Business, said the senate should only provide three iPods We should match the administrations purchase (of three iPods) he said The iPods only benefit a few students Sen Christine Welsh College of Humanities & Social Sciences, said she agreed it was a significant purchase that would not benefit a large portion of the student body Why buy 13 iPods? she said Only a few students are benefiting Sen Harmony Walker, School of response As a result, Web Services added three other categones in addition to textbooks to T Bay, allowing for moie vanety in the postings Keith said the Book Exchange probably didnt succeed in the past because some students didnt know it existed He said he also wanted to let the Bookstoie know about T Bay since its pnmary souice of income comes from selling During last finals week I found out many students had purchased scantrons before they were distributed, she said I also found that they needed blue books as well as scantrons Sen Walker said she believed by passing the bill, the senate can relieve some of the students stress After all senators voted, the bill passed with a 16-- 1 0 vote Bookstore Ohms, said his primary concern about T Bay is the short window of opportunity provided for students to use the site to buy and sell textbooks If a book is listed on the site and doesnt sell, the student might take it to the Bookstores textbook buyback days and find the Bookstore already has enough copies or the buyback penod might already be done for the semester Levi Judd, a senior finance major from Kanab said he found Dennis manager, out about T Bay by browsing on the SUU Web site and posted some books and a housing contract Monday night Even though Judd hasnt received any calls yet, he said he thinks people will start using T Bay once they hnd out about it Instead of making fliers and hanging them around campus, students can post something on T Bay faster saving time he said Keith said he encourages students to use T Bay and take advantage of the available service Students can link to T Bay from the Current Students Web page, http www suu educurstu or from SUUSAs Web page, To http www suu edusuusa post on T Bay one must have a curient username and password to the SUU network party if he or she teels uncomfortable and one should always carry a cellular phone Mike Mathews a jumoi maiketmg major from Philadelphia, Pa said it is everyones responsibility to watch out for friends in order to prevent a 1 their car doois when leaving their car unattended If attacked, one should fight back, scream, call foi help and run as fast as possible, Womack said Once an individual is in a safe place, he or she should call 911 or campus security depending on wheie the incident occurred Students can also make decisions that will help or lunder their potential to stay safe, Womack said Drugs and alcohol can potentially contnbute to a dangerous situation Diugs and alcohol diminish peoples capability to think cleaily Womack said Avoiding those situations can help keep people safe It a student chooses to consume alcohol at a party, he oi she should always have a trusted, sober friend piesent at all times Neilsonsaid One should leave lock BevEsvi Continued Another concern about tire bill was whether the purchasing of some kind of incentive for evaluations would become a trend Sen Caytee Cox College of Science, said students are going to expect more incentives for the next semester Sen Melinda Miller, College of Humanities & Social Sciences, said she didnt foresee a problem in evaluation incentives any moie than previous incentives the senate has awarded money for We have passed many bills for the purchasing of pizzas as incentives to get students to attend forums, she said By motivating students to (fill out evaluations) it can help all students After concerns were addressed, the bill passed with a 10 5 1 vote Students taking finals next week will be able to receive free scantrons for tests and free food throughout the week thanks to the passing of bill Surviving Finals Week The bill allocated $2 055 for the purchasing of supplies to be handed out during finals week Sen Christine Welsh was concerned that students might purchase scantrons before they are handed 1 will not be questioned dunng the process During the hve year plan, a tenured professor may be required to attend training courses or to obtain certification to become more current in his or her discipline Harraf said Barney said some faculty vocalized have members opposition to the process Some faculty members believe they should not have to prove themselves on an ongoing basis because thats what the before penod probationary receiv ing tenure is for Harraf said In addition, prolessors may have anxieties something fiom happening to them or prevent them from hurting other people You want to watch out for youi (friends), he said Its your responsibility to keep your friends ' out of trouble English Tyler Harry ajumoi major from Salt Lake City, said males aie also vulnerable to attacks I think he said guys aie vulnerable too Sometimes guys get beat up at parties and for some ieason alcohol seems to be fuel for anger Guys should avoid those 8888 during weekdays to report a cnme or suspicious activity or 58b 7793 after hours or on weekends toward a new process they are unfamiliar with Barney said it is not the universitys goal to terminate tenured faculty members who may be slipping for whatever reason We are not looking for faculty to get nd of, he said Our committee is dedicated to help faculty maintain currency m their field, which ultimately benefits students Harraf said students will benefit from tlus process even after graduating should Your diploma appreciate, not depreciate, he said Because of the process to keep faculty current, alumni will benefit from SUUs increased positive image and reputation Anna Serbina, a freshman biology major from St George, said the post tenure reviews aie a good policy because some tenured professors dont seem to be as committed to students as non tenured professors I think the reviews aie good because when a professor has been here for a long time often they think they can just do whatever they w'ant she said They dont seem to care as much about students anymore a Justin Booth, senior management major from Salt Lake City said whoever is responsible for granting tenure to the wrong professors should be reviewed not the tenured professor I think the less credible professors are getting tenured in the first place he said I think whoever tenures the faculty needs to be under review |
